His one handed back hand is exquisite, his forehand is versatile (great balance of power, accuracy etc.) He's a better athlete than Borg, even in present day tennis - a few guys like Nadal, Mofis et al not withstanding - he's one of the most gifted athletically as well. He really has a tremendous combination of tools.

Tsonga played the best game of his life. Anyone saying that Federer should retire after this is an ass. Tsongo also mauled Nadal a couple of weeks ago, should Nadal retire? Nadal also lost to Djokovic earlier, should he retire? No.. even if you're the best, you're still going to lose whether you like it or not. Even if Nadal wins more slams than Federer.. for me Federer will always be the greatest... Nadal is all about power.. Federer is Skill.

Just as Federer ended Sampras's career at wimbledon when Sampras was 29 so has Tsonga finished Federer which currently is 29. Federer is no more at his prime, but he has acomplished so much in his career and for that he will be remembered just as Sampras is!!

Put a prime Federer against a prime Nadal...when the courts hadn't been slowed down, and skill was still evident in the game, apart from hitting the ball as hard as you can... and you get one clear winner every time. Federer is pure class. Nadal is brute power..and there are many with brute power, which is will Nadal will struggle to get to 16.

Federer on the other hand though, is all technique, pure brilliance. There are many players who play similar to Nadal, where power is the focus, Nadal is being beaten at his own game at the moment by Djokovic aswel, which is a shame as i like Nadal.

Look only at Sampras poor clay court record. Federer has dominated tennis in his prime much more than Sampras in his ALL the records are in favour of Federer except two: Wimbledon titles (7 Sampras to 6 Federer) and most weeks as number one (286 weeks for Sampras, ONE week more than Federer...).

Federer was and still the best player i ever saw, the most gracious the most smart, most spectacular, the most complete game in history and beutifull in is movements...simply the best.
Nadal is amazing too, but not have half the grace of federer...and the spaniard´s know it very well...Nadal could win every match´s against federer, and mutch more slam´s, but will never be most beutifull then fed game.Just like fed never had a mental stability like Nadal...

He's the most gifted indeed, he makes everything looks so easy, but he's declining at the moment. Nadal is not as gifted but still, he's also exceptional. Nobody works, plays like Nadal and achieve similar success. Djokovic comes close after him.
Federer's return game and clutch nerve were gone since a long time ago. It's still there but won't always present when he needs it the most. Nowadays he struggles to cope with big hitters on fast court while he used to own them in the past.

Just like I said,Rog will never win a grand slam again.He can't beat Nadal on any slam (since 2007),and occasionally he lose from Djokovic (2008,2010,2011).For past two years he lose from guys like Berdich,Soderling,Tsonga and Del Potro.He was winning in times of low competition but now he's old and his game is well studied by the other players.The greatest player of all time?I don't think so.Maybe Borg or Sampras.

Never mind the technology of the racquets, we are not talking power here, we are talking about comparing players. In order to do that, you look at their opponents played through-out their career. Most noticeably, you look at the opponents played in finals.

@czechmate68jj Technique wise Federer is the best tennis player ever. His forehand and backhand are pin point accurate. His one handed back hand is exquisite, his forehand is versatile (great balance of power, accuracy etc.) He's a better athlete than Borg, even in present day tennis - a few guys like Nadal, Mofis et al not withstanding - he's one of the most gifted athletically as well. He really has a tremendous combination of tools.

@mmike222 Try to understand that good forehand,backhand doesn't make you the greatest player ever.There are some guys in top 100 that have better forehand,backhand,serve or volley than Nadal,Djokovic,Federer or Murray.It's the competition that makes you the greatest ever.Sampras and Agassi era of tennis was full of great champions like Becker,Edberg,Courier,Rafter or Ivanisevic and that's what I call competition.Roger was winning slams against Roddick,Gonzales,Bagdatis and other medium players.

The only two guys I can think off are Nadal and Djokovic. I mean, Murray is way too mentally weak to really form a threat in slams and delpo is always injured.
