I love the sound from the 60s/70s. It´s a kind of raw and honest rock music. MC5 is very special but have a lot of jazz in their blood. My hobby is to rediscover all the famous and forgotten bands from that period- And ...it´s a music treasure. Listen for example to The Misunderstood and of course THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". Really f.....g goooood and with a bloody driving beat.
I'm a massive fliying burritos fan, but in terms of "left out of history"...remember the stories how everyone who bought a velvet underground album started a band...EVERYONE who found the MC5 just loved music. I rather like that the rest of of the world hasn't learned...fuck them...they're morons
To be honest, The Who had huge influx to American underground bands, including MC5. This song is pretty close incarnation of "anyway anyhow anywhere". But the influence reversed, when several british moptopped, silk-suited, well-behaving rockers (Yardbirds feat Jimmy Page, Deep Purple, Hendrix crew) toured in States and visiting Detroit checked the hottest name there -- MC5. Back in Albion, they all just wanted to be like MC5.
forget led zeppelin, the who, why the beatles in that period time (1967)dont played those jammig thing like mc5 on tv live, since the beatles left to play live in 1966 ,only on records.
I notice that Fred and the boys started to dress like their nans for this one. But who gives a fuck, this is free-form genius from the best band to walk this bloody Earth. And that's coming from a man with a Sonics tattoo. Didn't half hurt though! Cake and love x.
Thank you Sirlongpass for this taste of one of God's greatest gifts to us! You guys should check out "Michigan's One Handed Drummer" on here. . . I saw his interview on a little, blue out of nowhere show called Spirit of Michigan one night. . . pretty cool show and a really cool interview with two jammin guys takin up the cause of bangin on stuff! Representin' America's High Five!
When I first heard this, I thought: Now either the band has stopped in the middle of the song to tune-up, or this is just some kind of "unmusical" improvisation
@Kelly14UK especially when hooked up to one of those SUNN amps--by George, I think our boy Kramer here has Clapton's exact 1964-1966 Yardbird/Mayall/Fresh Cream sound down perfectly with that Les Paul/SUNN set-up here!
SUNN was also an American company, founded by the bass player on "Louie, Louie", who also produced "Funhouse" by The Stooges--Don Galucci!
being an employee of the GRANDE BALLROOM i've had the pleasure of knowing robin and the boys since 66 they created music that was so far ahead of it's time that all you have to do is listen to the music today to hear their influence. Rage, Pearl jam, i could go on naming bands but what's the point. Anybody watching this knows exactly what the fuck i'm talking about. REST IN PEACE Robin, aND Fred. Know that u are loved and missed. Look for the movie "Louder than Love" a tribute to all of u
I saw MC5 in Indianapolis, Indiana in about 1971; at Cincy Summer Pop Fest in 1970 I saw Iggy and The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Mott The Hoople, Grand Funk RR. You could afford tickets back then, and the live jams still resonate in my head. This vid is GREAT! Thanks for posting it! Wow! Glen in Indiana US
Can't believe how NOISY they are considering it's only '67! Fuck! Not a huge fan of the MC5, I mean I totally appreciate their contribution and their importance to modern music, but this live stuff I've been seeing on youtube is fucking SLAYING me!
This reminds me of where the Yardbirds went under the direction of Jimmy Page. Of the classic detroit "proto-metal" bands, MC5 were the most musically interesting. They, the Stooges, and Alice Cooper are the forefathers of metal AND punk.
@alexdroogie100 Don't forget Funkadelic, they're from Detroit, and even though they were a funk band, they knew how to rock (listen to Super Stupid for instance), and whithout Funkadelic, there would be no Red Hot Chili Peppers, and no funk rock or funk metal like Infectious Grooves !
3:33 says it all - they are a band that is definitely gonna piss off the older generation. But who invited the late President Dwight D Eisenhower to an MC5 gig? Ike was never likely to be a hard-rock fan
Imagine how much drugs these guys had to take to play music like this. "Hey lets get so stoned we can't play anymore....and then lets jam out and not stop."
@bryanatg Lou Reed's Velvet Underground as well as the Who had a direct influence on punk. The VU delved into taboo song topics and the Who were anarchists on stage.
@colabacio I agree, all respect due to MC5, one of the "overlooked" pioneers of Blues Rock and Rock & Roll. There's a people, that are simply, passionate portrayals and It's intended to be just that, whether it catches on or not. MC5 is, if anything, most recognized for their ability to express rebellion culture & Rock with huge Soul. The fact that it was a displeasure to many, does not change that fact that MC5, has a solid, influential, impact in Rock and music/political history.
@marcoamedrano Not sure about 65, they did sound this 'revolutionary' very early, they used to play this in the school hall, black to comm was how you would wire up the mics into the back of the amps, so yeah early, they, as Kramer said, used to play like this and realised they could clear the hall due to the noise, but also that they were onto something, yeah totally forward thinking music!
@48mwl Oh yeah, that Gretsch power chord by "Sonic" Smith sounds just like Beck and Dreja for sure, the harmonica is totally Keith Relf improvisation!
I really don't like how Led Zeppelin and The Who get all this recognition even though they are apsolutly iconic but all im saying is The MC5 should get just as much recognition even if they are not the most musicly talented band they are extreamly talented and the invented an intire genre of music! They should have get more then they have and still do.
@MattDylan420 theres all kinds of bands that start off punk back then the velvet underground is one i cant think of anu others i got a headache they where a big one tho
@MattDylan420 Damn right, 3 great records though, but so rock and roll they shot themselves in the foot, bad/good choice of manager, heroin, Tyner had a family, The White Panthers?? shouting Motherfucker on their live debut was genius at the time but did not impress the feds. These are a few reasons, but all contribute. Plus the fact they didn't tour much outside their home area as a complete unit. As Kramer said the summer of love didn't stop in Detroit!
@MattDylan420 The MC5 still had a cool history. They were way more against the establishment and not as commercial as The Who or Led Zeppelin were to become. They were a part of the underground. Because of this, they burnt out in the early 70s, they didn't fade away with an increasingly boring song catalog which tried to appeal to wider audiences... like the WHO or ZEP.
@MattDylan420 hey buddy the mc5 is a bit unknow cause the first song they did on the radio was kick out the jams motherfucker and they get banned in a way
@MattDylan420 nevermind if mc5 is not recognized.. like this there are only the reals who know dem and not all the crappy pop boyz wannabe old school who like the beatles
@MattDylan420 I think the main reason for their lack of popularity was the fact that they had no obvious sex symbol. Zep had Plant, the Who Daltrey. A chubby guy with thick glasses and a huge gap between his teeth is not exactly what the mainstream American media hype machine will get behind. Unfortunately people tend to be shallow.
Before all the controversy due to the uncensored LP and Sinclair liner notes, the 45 w/Brothers and Sister was a top 40 hit. The MC5 were essentially blacklisted by both the Federal and State authorities who didn't care for the politics they were associated with and later the music and rock industry itself who didn't need the hassle.I bet that a call went from certain Federal offices to Atlantic records when Back in the USA was released suggesting they not promote that record.
@MattDylan420 In the circles I move & moved in over the last 30 years they are massivley influencial. Their huge, full on rawness and complete lack of inhibition were & still are a huge " Just fucking play & go for it" influence. Sadly that alone don't make yer rich, I got so annoyed a few years ago when I saw Britney Spears wearing an MC5 T shirt! Like she has/had any idea of what they were about. Kids eh?
Mc5 Had the biggest pair of brass balls. It is one thing for hendrix and cream to get up on stage and improv because they were excellent musicians and there were small 3 piece bands. Mc5 had enough nerve to say kick out the jams MOTHER FUCKEr and make lots of freeform noise.
avante guard for 1967??? Do you realize what was being made in 1967...SGT PEPPER....ARE YOU EXPERIENCED....DISRAELI GEARS...etc. This was the NORM for 1967 dude. Avant garde would be like...no blues influence, no sound exploration, no 20 minutes jams/drums solos;basically the complete opposite of mid/late 60's music.
@Paullonden, you should get slapped in the fuckin jaw for saying what you just said, motherfucker! I say we all gang up on this pussy named Paullonden and fuck his MF ass up!!!!!
Ha ha ha!!!! Look at Paullonden, she's mad now :*( don't cry, lil bitch, I'll take care of your sorry ass. You're such a pathetic excuse for a human being...you really should take a good look at yourself and apologize to the world for your stupidity. LOL!! XOXO babe!!!
Paullonden, what A damned fool. LOL!! you've been entertainin me for days...what's more, you can't even spell or use proper punctuation. I'm really feeling kind of sad for you. Anyway, have a great night!
Look, fool, just because you need to take Prozac doesn't mean you should be trying to prescribe it for others. You're a sore loser, you lost this argument, get a life and do something with it!
pre-punk or stoner jazz? don't thumbs down me, just wondering! The comments--@ Miles Davis--have me wondering. And yeah, Midwest Pride! (couldn't help that last bit!)
That show that night at Dewies started out with Ramblin Rose, then one of their roadies pumped the crowd, getting everybody fired up,then Rob Tyner SLID acrosse the stage ,grabbed the microphone, perfuctly on cue,and hit Kick Out The Jams MF...You had to be there
saw the MC5 at Dewies beer bar in Madison Wi back in 70The band showed up and hung with us locals...shooting pool, sharing a pitchure of beer, hanging out while their roadies set up their gear..And then when they took the stage, stand back..power rock and roll.
even though it's a shit hole. Amazing things come out of detroit, and the MC5 is just one of the many few. The detorit music scene is still amazing... it's the only industry that thrives there. every music fan should head to michigan.
I hope you're kidding me. Do you live here? Or do you live out in Mount Clemens? Seriously... Lol... I really hope you're joking... Detroit's nothing but a burned out shell... there are sections of the city that make Fallout 3 look nicer to live in than here... the groups coming out of here anymore are scene/emo/grindcore shit that can't even play... that and a lot of wannabe rappers
So I really hope you're joking, and Don't ever advocate anyone to come here
Detroit is home to some of the best musiscians period.
I myself chose not to live there anymore as it is basically a shit hole with no economy to speak of.
I think that motown breeds talent and work ethic that some places dont, but most of those who really have skill have left the city a long time ago. just my 2 cents.
Consider the context of when the MC5 did this...1967...everyone was going psychedelic, avant garde, free jazz, freakout, different...WEIRD was the rule.
what with the crazy music these kids are playing today they all must be on drugs,it s hilarious to think about what those 1960 squares though.t it was a polarized world bacck then. bonzo76 rockon!!!!!!!!!!!!! newman the mail man listen to the whole song what a break down
reasons it's interesting,Crap performance ,nice try though .The 5ive in their Carnaby drag ☺ The Yardbirds did these kind of rave ups a thousand times better.
A huge difference between THE WHO and these posers is that THE WHO had talent, unlike this shit garbage, ooops, I mean GARAGE BAND. This song, if you want to insult songwriters throughout history, just SUCKS to the point of being in the pathetic hall of fame.
sorry..I think i clicked wrong hand... totally agree.. all those hard core music snobs go on my nerves big time...It is all about fun after all and not some so call coolness or Whatever the fuck mental disorder might be .. complexes ??
You wonder why rock music doesn't sound like this today? Get a close look at the equipment they had to work with! Fred Smith (long haired dude) opens with a "clang, clang, clang"-kind of sound on his Gretsch guitar hooked up to probably a 50-100 watt Sunn amp (boy, those are two names you hardly see anymore--Gretsch and Sunn) and Wayne Kramer has the same kind of Sunn amp getting sort-of an old Yardbirds-Jeff Beck era sound out of his Gibson Les Paul.
Unfortunately, I heard Fender bought SUNN and phased them out in '02. Which is a shame, because two of my favorite guitar players were KNOWN for SUNN amps: Leslie West from Mountain, and Randy Holden from Blue Cheer. In fact, SUNN built Holden the loudest amps in the world in 1970.
Most interesting fact about SUNN is that the company was founded by one of the Kingsmen ("Louie Louie"). I think another one of the Kingsmen produced "Funhouse" by The Stooges. Those guys had some talent beyond Louie
This must be the embryonic stages of Rob Tyner growing his 'fro. And what caused him to lose the glasses--contacts?
I heard their early records before this: it sounds like they went from sounding like Detroit's version of The Who, to sounding like a cross between The Yardbirds and early-Pink Floyd here. Then back to a Who-type sound with "Kick out the Jams".
Fuck the Who really who played for fame and money who were are celebrities but not the MC5!
They were true believers of the promises of rocknroll. And who says they were violent? Not at all. Kicking out the jams meant Peace Love and Freedom from the corporations...
Love the Sgt. Pepper outfits. The 60's. Gotta love 'em.

Mc5 had enough nerve to say kick out the jams MOTHER FUCKEr and make lots of freeform noise.

im pretty sure a lot of these people mentioned were influenced by the same thing, heavy use of lsd. everyone was OUT THERE.

i'm twice surprised with that. first, 'cause the sound quality, it's very good. second, the date, this is very avant-garde for 1967.
miles davis certainly had some insipirations with that.
poniboy 2 years ago
avante guard for 1967??? Do you realize what was being made in 1967...SGT PEPPER....ARE YOU EXPERIENCED....DISRAELI GEARS...etc. This was the NORM for 1967 dude. Avant garde would be like...no blues influence, no sound exploration, no 20 minutes jams/drums solos;basically the complete opposite of mid/late 60's music.

watch as the MC5 do everything that every band before them did and everything that every band after them did. amazing.

It's so great that footage like this has survived and is available. This classic tune was never recorded for an album, was it?

It was recorded for the album '66 Breakout, i think. Amazing video though.

That show that night at Dewies started out with Ramblin Rose, then one of their roadies pumped the crowd, getting everybody fired up,then Rob Tyner SLID acrosse the stage ,grabbed the microphone, perfuctly on cue,and hit Kick Out The Jams MF...You had to be there
1chilidoho9 2 years ago
saw the MC5 at Dewies beer bar in Madison Wi back in 70The band showed up and hung with us locals...shooting pool, sharing a pitchure of beer, hanging out while their roadies set up their gear..And then when they took the stage, stand back..power rock and roll.

Miles did this better on Bitches Brew

Miles stole his whole gig from the MC5. Well-known fact.

even though it's a shit hole. Amazing things come out of detroit, and the MC5 is just one of the many few. The detorit music scene is still amazing... it's the only industry that thrives there. every music fan should head to michigan.

LMFAO...

I think that motown breeds talent and work ethic that some places dont, but most of those who really have skill have left the city a long time ago. just my 2 cents.
gotta love mc5 though.

Consider the context of when the MC5 did this...1967...everyone was going psychedelic, avant garde, free jazz, freakout, different...WEIRD was the rule.

this version of Black to Comm is pretty good, but I like the version from the "Live at the Saginaw Civic Center" (boot) version the best!
much heavier sound and much more raw then this
still a classic anyway

A huge difference between THE WHO and these posers is that THE WHO had talent, unlike this shit garbage, ooops, I mean GARAGE BAND. This song, if you want to insult songwriters throughout history, just SUCKS to the point of being in the pathetic hall of fame.

any asshole can get dressed up shake their dick and act like a rockstar come on

I think I detect a Yardbirds "Rave Up" influence in this song.
cammbs123 3 years ago
You wonder why rock music doesn't sound like this today? Get a close look at the equipment they had to work with! Fred Smith (long haired dude) opens with a "clang, clang, clang"-kind of sound on his Gretsch guitar hooked up to probably a 50-100 watt Sunn amp (boy, those are two names you hardly see anymore--Gretsch and Sunn) and Wayne Kramer has the same kind of Sunn amp getting sort-of an old Yardbirds-Jeff Beck era sound out of his Gibson Les Paul.
notfragile33 3 years ago
Sunn amps have made a HUGE resurgence in the last few years...
beowulven 3 years ago
Unfortunately, I heard Fender bought SUNN and phased them out in '02. Which is a shame, because two of my favorite guitar players were KNOWN for SUNN amps: Leslie West from Mountain, and Randy Holden from Blue Cheer. In fact, SUNN built Holden the loudest amps in the world in 1970.
Most interesting fact about SUNN is that the company was founded by one of the Kingsmen ("Louie Louie"). I think another one of the Kingsmen produced "Funhouse" by The Stooges. Those guys had some talent beyond Louie

They were so not "violent revolutionaries".
heathdan07 3 years ago
This must be the embryonic stages of Rob Tyner growing his 'fro. And what caused him to lose the glasses--contacts?
I heard their early records before this: it sounds like they went from sounding like Detroit's version of The Who, to sounding like a cross between The Yardbirds and early-Pink Floyd here. Then back to a Who-type sound with "Kick out the Jams".
notfragile33 3 years ago
none of those bands are even in the same building as the MC5. stop trying to label everyone
Diomedes22 3 years ago 3
I like how this band has a variety in their music... but yeah, nothing like the others.
sKR3Wthepigz 3 years ago
Fuck the Who really who played for fame and money who were are celebrities but not the MC5!
They were true believers of the promises of rocknroll. And who says they were violent? Not at all. Kicking out the jams meant Peace Love and Freedom from the corporations...
