I think there's a category error, here. The 'super' character in stories of old was the cream of the fucking crop, intellectually (if not also physically...). Poly-maths. They are still around. Go to fucking MIT or some other Ivy League school.
Is it possible to be a broad knowledge geek? I mean I am not really an expert in anything but I know something of a very large cross section of non-related topics, all of which I find very interesting.
yes. my father is a genius when it comes to physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, carpentry, and design. he has his flaws, no doubt, but hes like Master Keaton.
I've been thinking about this concept for a couple of years now, although I prefer nerd to geek as a term for individuals who are obessesed on a specific topic. I see a bright and interesting future if the world continues like this
Don't get me wrong, he's a phenomenal writer, without a doubt my favorite author, but you gotta admit, at least based on this evidence, he's kind of a lousy public speaker.
@jlsamuels if he was a politician it could be a problem :-)), i care much more about his ability to express himself on paper. i discovered his art about 4 months ago, since then this genious surprises me every new book of his i read
cool. i was just wondering how come i hadn't run into anything by neil stephenson on youtube. the world simply wasn't ready yet. good to see that we are now.
Hey, what about people with no long-term memory then? And what about one-year old babies? Surely they can't be geeky?

feels like more of a personal statement than a public speech.

it seems like most great authors generally pay for that by lacking in oratory skills.

William Gibson & Neal Stephenson are leaders in the newest (and I suspect the best) age of great stories.

I feel lucky to be commenting so early on in Stephenson's first YouTube appearance! He is a great contributor to SF literature.
