This is before Ricky had his own band. No James Burton on guitar yet. Jazz great & top LA session man Barney Kessel played lead on this track. I love BK's jazz, but the soon-to-follow JB blows him away on Ricky's stuff..
On April 10, 1957 I was watching this episode of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet when Ozzie walked up to the microphone & introduced Ricky who started singing this song. It was the first time he sang on the show. His singing performances became a regular feature on the TV show. That summer the Soviet Union sent Sputnik into orbit, causing much anxiety across America. The Ozzie & Harriet show remained a respite from Cold War worries. Ozzie ate a lot of ice cream & Ricky sang.
@leih1 ok, so i love ricky nelson but in all honesty he was a druggie and by his own words he slept with thousands of women, so i think guys are still pretty much the same today. human nature never changes.
@fixfireleo I agree. Everyone pines for the "good ol' days", but that sweet innocent look was just the style. Girls pining after Ricky did not have thoughts any purer than those pining after his more sexualized successors.
I think Ricky is one of history's hottest. Whatever his image, I find him more sexual than even a gyrating rebellious Mick Jagger or Robert Plant. He just gets there by way of a pout, not a pelvic thrust.
Though I must also say that I do prefer the music of the good ol days.

In my comment I mistakenly said the Soviets
sent Sputnik into orbit the summer of 1957. They
did it in October 1957. It started the space race
& was a factor in the acceleration of the nuclear
arms race. It was a stressful time. The Ozzie &
Harriet show helped people get a little break
from it all. About the biggest drama was Ozzie
getting upset when they were out of tutti-frutti
ice cream.
