Yes it is a symbol that goes back to one of the TWO "religions" that have been present since Adam...The Religion of and approved by God: Islam (Monotheism) and the "religion" of Lucifer (aka Iblis, Satan) which is anything that takes you away from God and your true path.

For instance most people here in the west worship Money, Sex and material objects (boats, cars, houses, toasters...) and are actively trading their souls for these things. Satan loves them.

Well in fact the behavior you describe reflects the high degree of "westernization" of the people in the east. YOU might want to research British/Dutch Colonialism since 1650 and the role it has played in the shaping of the East and the various "cultures" of every country they touched in the last 300 (500 if you count Spain and Portugal, 2100 including the Romans/Catholics) plus years. A poison that has infected the world...on purpose.
