If you're 40 years old and losing your hair, you should probably think about cutting. Just ask the girl to cut it like this: "up, down, up, up, down, pull off, up, down, hammer on, left, right, circle, square, square, L1, R2, jizz, up, down, pull off, give up on guitar, up, down, die, left, triangle, hammer on, head explodes, hammer on..."
Imagine the amount of practice he would have to have done. BORING. Sounds like shit for something that takes years of practice. I am impressed though.
Very impressive; and Rusty is an incredibly talented player. But I just don't see the creativity and the art in this to where I could listen to a full album of this over an over and love this kind of soloing. I can listen to a Jimi Hendrix song or Stevie Ray Vaughn solo over a 25 year period and still love it and never tire of its creation. I just don't get that same feeling with a technical sweep picking solo.
@casbah1982 totally agree...everything he makes just lacks creativity, let alone feeling. He plays so fast that he misses out on phrasing. I recently bought the outworld cd...let's just say he can move his fingers fast on a guitar neck, nothing too much more.
@virtuosolomon Right, I totally respect musicians that can play like this and play well; but to me it's like doing calculus problems where you pull your hair out in frustration if you don't do it right. I get more enjoyment out of my guitar when I create with good melodies that feel right, straight from the Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Vernon Reid, and Kirk Hammett school.
@casbah1982 - you're in the wrong Rusty Cooley video if you're looking for creativity and art. it's so obviously a video lesson. is a paintbrush art? no! but you can use one to create art. a single sweep picked arpeggio's not art but you can use the technique to create art. it's really that simple.
@NolitaDenise yea so simple, anyone walkin down the street in a fuckin hick town can play this with there fucking eyes closed, sleeping, underwater, hands tied behind ther back, in space, while a cow is licking ther ass, can easily play this.
When he is doing it slow and the video is almost over i'm like, oh he isn't gonna do it fast again :( but then he somehow fits it all in to like a billionth of a second.
@ellogovenah2011 Dude quit dissing on all these guitarists. Hey everybody this guy thinks that Slash can outplay Yngwi Malmsteen, and he says that he could play arpeggios from hell in his sleep LOL. Yngwie would outplay slash with his eyelashes.
Okay, so let me get this straight, getting as good as you is as easy as sacrificing a goat, selling my soul to Satan, and learning how to Spooge a hole in the spacetime continuum?
I hate these fucks who come in and say that this stuff is too fast, and constantly reminding us that fast doesn't mean it's good music. They're right of course, but that's a double edged sword; just because it's too fast for your possibly genetically inferior brain to comprehend it doesn't mean it lacks musicality. This is why people like Justin Bieber are fucking millionaires and this guy probably barely scrapes by economically and is still a mother fucking baller champion.
@gtechatheist Most people you will run into are stupid. The majority of people are not going to be able to enjoy complex music. Why do you think pop music and rap are so popular? Simplicity. The average listener cares more about the "Image" associated to the song, then any of the actual music. This is why you have bands that completely suck, that sell out concerts. Simply because they have a "cool image". Until that changes, popular music is going to be crap.
@Conkyproductions To my knowledge, this only reiterates my point. I suppose you're just asking me to get over it. I'm quite over it, I assure you. I've accepted these things, but I don't need these fuckers coming into a vid that's meant for serious guitar players attempting to learn shred techniques and complaining because it doesn't sound fucking musical enough. It's an exercise for christ's sake, what do people expect?
@gtechatheist I sort of just randomly replied to your comment lol, it wasn't exactly targeted towards a specific person. The majority of people on youtube have absolutely no idea what they are talking about most of the time.
@gtechatheist I agree with everything you said except for one thing. Justin Beiber is actually talented and has played instruments for awhile. I'm not a fan of the genre, but to automatically insult musicians because they're popular and pretty is as musically ignorant as saying fast playing isn't musical. I like mostly rock, alt, and death metal by the way.
@GoreSmasher I think you just said that Justin Bieber was pretty. Interesting. But no seriously, read my post, I never actually insulted Bieber. I just said that most musicians make millions of dollars doing something which is really simple to do, and which takes really just a modicum of actual musical talent. Meanwhile, folks like Rusty Cooley practice their whole lives to achieve virtuosity and are relegated to obscure youtube lessons where they get slammed for not being musical.
@gtechatheist You can have all the technical skill in the world, but if you can't write a good song, you won't go anywhere. I admire guitarists like Cooley, but I can't just listen to people showing off in the same way I listen to bands. It's dull as far as song writing goes. Take Pink Floyd and Opeth. The strength of both of these is masterful song writing even though the music isn't especially complicated. I don't like music that is focused on just one aspect instead of the song.
As much as I'm into shred guitar: Rusty is proof that there IS such a thing like "playing too fast". He's incredibly fast. But at this tempo, choice of notes doesn't even matter. He could play completely bogus "arpeggios" and it would sound exactly like what he just played - ugly and crap. He really needs to leave some room for tonality and musicality in his stuff. Also, if he would cut down the gain, maybe he could have something that could be called a "tone".
@LOLPombaer given your incredible musical enlightenment, i have to concede defeat to you, in honor of your exceeding brilliance i shall now go around telling olympic runners they have "too much" endurance, powerlifters they're "too strong", boxing champions they've won "too many" fights, star quarterbacks they throw "too well", and nuclear physicists they're "too smart"
@SevenStringShredHead i kinda have to agree that this stuff there didnt sound too good. ofc it was clean and super fast but somewhere is the border u know
@Aremine as long as your open minded your more than welcome to have your own opinion, i happen to think this sounds really fucking cool but that's just the difference in our tastes, what i hate is ignorant fucksticks who don't know shit about music (probably dont even play an instrument) who go off saying stupid shit like LOLPombaer was saying
@SevenStringShredHead "i shall now go around telling olympic runners they have "too much" endurance, powerlifters they're "too strong"... etc..."
Art is utterly different to those things. The best artist isn't the one who makes as many marks as possible on the canvas, in as many colours as possible, without any thought to design, until it becomes an ugly mess. That's what playing too fast all the time is like.
Nothing this guy does has inspired me or made me want to do what he does. He fast as fuck, thats all. I of course wouldn't mind having his technique but Id put it to better use then him. Petrucci is my man. Tosin Abasi to..
@guitar789: I respect the point, truly. A well-rounded player would be 1 part Rusty Cooley and 1 part Bill Frissell. What I've learned through an experience like yours is this. Thoseyears of practice GET YOUR TECHNIQUE OUT OF YOUR WAY. They remove any hindrences to your self-expression. I would hate for you (or anyone else) to think it is "wasted time" to build sheer skill.
I started learning how to shred until I reached 240 bpm (16 nps) after 4 years of daily practice. Then I realized, what the hell were I doing all these years? I finally started to learn guitar without shred and sweeps because that doesnt sound too musical and just impresses people for some seconds. It is really not worth the effort to pract. a lick 100 times each day just to get it down one day. A know a bunch of shredders who realized they know nothing yet when listening to i.e. Scotty Anderson
Now that's just your opinion... I personally like the way it sounds fast, I like the texture of lick at fast speed. At slow speed to me it doesn't sound interesting at all, but when he plays it up to speed it gets that texture.
@yoheff988 "how does a person with small hands deal with a 251/2 scale guitar?"
Just get a 24 3/4 scale guitar. ESP/LTD make guitars like that that still have 24 jumbo frets and thin necks. Brian May's guitar has an even shorter scale length...
very impressive but sounds like crap when played that fast, speed isn't a virtue

@monkeyx17 That's because he almost reached the limit of the human ears =/

@monkeyx17
Now that's just your opinion... I personally like the way it sounds fast, I like the texture of lick at fast speed. At slow speed to me it doesn't sound interesting at all, but when he plays it up to speed it gets that texture.

took him 1minute 14secs to explain and play slowly and 3 to play at his speed =0

@yoheff988 "how does a person with small hands deal with a 251/2 scale guitar?"
Just get a 24 3/4 scale guitar. ESP/LTD make guitars like that that still have 24 jumbo frets and thin necks. Brian May's guitar has an even shorter scale length...
