  • Thanks for sharing the video

  • Does anyone know what hair type she has?

  • My mom did by bc. She went to cosmotology school. Best thing I ever did!! My curly hair is gorgeous.

  • ps: it's better to go to a salon, right ?

  • (sorry if there are faults, I don't speak English very well ... great my dictionary lol)

  • You're so courageous T-T I cut my hair once, but I can't remember if I liked or did not lol. I made the mistake of straightening hair 2 years ago (so stupid --")

Recent times, I can not stand my hair ... and now I fall on your videos and those of others. Your hair has grown so much and it looks so easy to style (Video 2011) *-*

I guess you have used natural products for health care (routine). You can tell me which please? thank you !!

  • in 4:20 that was totally my face when my stylist turned my chair around lol...but i totally luv my natural hair :3

  • You are so beautiful with and without hair. I am doing my BC friday 3/2/12. I am excited and I have bubble guts all at the same time. I have no idea what my texture is, and how to manage natural hair. I have been watching tons of videos for research

  • Hi guys, I've just decided to go natural but my hair is not relaxed but textured as I stopped relaxing in Jan 11, would I still need to do the BC after few months of not texturising?

  • wow, you are such an encouragement! I am soo afraid to do the big chop. I am two months transitioning from relaxed to natural, but I made up in my mind that I will do the big chop in May of June of this year. Your boldness has helped me. Thank you pretty girl!

  • I JUST did my big chop like 30 minutes ago lol...and I absolutely LOVE IT and don't regret it!

  • @Journeyoflife817 Congrates how is it going

  • Just watching this makes me scared! But it's for the best!

  • Sniff. Can't wait for my big chop day

  • I am transitioning now, and have been since August, and I am doing the big chop in a few months. SUPER EXCITED!

  • you are so pretty. ive done the big chop twice and my hair is just a lost cause. the first time i put chemicals back in. now all my texture is gone from heat damage. so be careful if you're using heat. i wish someone wouldve told me that when i went natural. even though its a common sense thing. but i know better now. loved the video.

  • How long had you gone without a perm before your chop?

  • My hair is majority grown out and I never cut off the ends, but today I just took the scissors and started cutting.......... I still need to do the other parts.

  • wow i really felt this video like it was happening to me wow. and the brows are niiiice

  • wow i had my big chop in may 2011. My hair is bushy and thick. Now I have to focus on getting it all the moisture it needs. Feels like I am getting back in touch with myself. Your hair is super cute thanks for the video. (smile)

  • Im getting my BC Tommorrow and I will watch this video for courage right before!! thanks for sharing your journey with the world.

  • u look so cute

  • I just cut mine on yesterday January 17, 2012 and I am sooooo LOVING it!!! :-)

  • @diva777queen u think it fits your head shape? i want to do mine in march when i turn 18, im scared i will look bad :(

  • i just started my transition and and i can't wait until my BC. I was going to wait about 1 yr but now after watching ur video i'm itching to do it sooner.

  • I just cut my about two weeks ago.. I had that same expression.. woww!!lol Its still taking some getting use too

  • You look really pretty tho...like your face is much more defined...I like it

  • I just did mine yesterday. I know how you feel. LOL

  • Omg it came out amazing! I'm doing my big chop tomorrow and I'm just soo excited and a little bit nervous, lol. Thanks for this video, it really gave me that burst of courage I need to do this.

  • This is like my fav video!!! so love it. And it really helped me because Im about five months post and today...I am doing the BIG CHOP! Your video gave me just the pep talk I needed! Thanks so much!

  • this almost made me cry

  • @coveredincoco Me too

  • Yeah, Ive done the big chop a couple of times but the last time is my last. No more relaxers for me!

  • Beautiful!!!!!

  • What did the stylist put on your hair after being chopped?

  • I have been transition for a year. I want a profeesional to cut all my pemed ends off. I cut the back off when I was trasitioning for 5 months so I have good length now.I'm ready to wear my twa, just don't know where to go to get it cut the correct way.

  • this is what i call COURAGE, and this is what i need to do,i guess :P

  • I just started transitioning about 4 weeks ago. I want to let my hair grow out for about 4 months to 6 months before my BC but knowing me I may just do it a little sooner. I have had relaxers slapped onto my head since i was about 4 or 5 years old and I sick of depending on relaxers and my hair breaking off and all that craziness that comes with it. I want to start off fresh and do something empowering and feel beautiful naturally. @nikkimae2003 & all my natural sistahz, you all inspire me. <3

  • I remember the first I saw this video, I was seeing myself through you and your expressions. I have yet to BC and I plan on transitioning for the long haul but your expression was priceless. That's going to be me, I already know it LOL!

  • Do we have to do the chop at 4-5 months? why? and can we go longer??

  • @Cookiegirrl1 I have been transitioning for a year I knew some that has transitioned for two years. From experience I wish that I would have cut my hair at Nikimae point. Because before I knew about proper handling I lost alot of hair in the back that probably would have been longer but, its a learning process. And my journey is not a piece of cake I plan on cutting my hair very soon to get rid these permed ends. Trying to stay away from heat this will cause you to loose hair.

  • Honey you look fabolous

  • goodness it looks so good on you...i wanna do this too but i feel like you gotta be super pretty to pull this off..ughh idk!

  • This chop looks simply gorgeous on you! I'm 7mths natural myself so I love crossing paths with other natural sista's! Thanks for sharing! New subby!

  • I love you BC so much! I am currenty 5-6 weeks post and I think we have similar hair types. You had a lot of NG after 4 months, really thick.

My NG is coily. Thank you for uploading this. I am wanting to BC in February when I turn 18, ( that will be 4 months) but my mom hates natural hair and I need to convince her.

  • This is beautiful!!!..Lots of my friends are afraid to be seen without a "fresh" perm...Im natural myself..and natural hair comes up in conversations with friends. They typically say that I'm for "good hair" because I have "good hair"...whatever that means..I wish more women would realize kinky, curly or straight this is who we are and how we were meant to be...I am me love it or hate it..I'm not altering myself..I guess it's all about knowing and being comfortable with self...great vid*PEACE*

  • 257 anyone know the name of that song????!!!

  • This is the video that helped me make the decision to go natural :)

  • I love da video I been transitionin since May 9th of this year and so far I'm kinda satisfied but t's gettin too thick to comb thru oh gosh it's awful but I can't wait til around Christmas to do the BC.... And side note I see 10 viewers didn't find their happy place while watchin this video LOL

    #WishMeLuckYouTube

  • @simplynaturaltee hey I've been transitioning since August and just like you I'm tired of the 2 textures already. It's so hard. My hair is a mess right now and I don't want to continue to press my hair with heat. Since I live in NY it's only gonna get harder for me because its starting to get cool and by hair will get drier. I think I'm just gonna do the BC around Christmas or Jan after new years. You should do it to :)

  • @dominsmith hey dont give up. i've been transitioning since march and its getting better now. Im getting used to the 2 textures and i do protective styles so i dont have to mess with my hair much. If u can try to braid ur hair for the winter.dont forget to moisturize and condition.

  • @dominsmith hey girl.. don't give up.. i did the BC Oct 16 and i am loving the new look and low maintenance. i get so many compliments on my hair. I was nervous at first but once i got in the chair i was just ready for the hair to get off my head. Stay inspired and do what works for u. and as far as the dryness there are many products to help with that. I did a lot of searching and spending before i found what products best suited me.

  • Ur videos really inspired me to do the big chop.. i have a hair appt tomorrow, but i am very nervous, as well as anxious. I have been transitioning for a little over 4 months and am sick of the two textures. Do u have any advice for me on how to prepare for the chop? Should i do the bc ?

  • I'm gonna do it in January when my hair is a bit longer

  • this was great...I am still thinking about doing it. I am going to make a decision by next Friday. I am 8mths post relaxer and trying to decide if I should big chop or just get trims every 2-3mths. Also are you in Atlanta? That shop looks familiar..over off of Moreland if I am not mistaking. That is another thing too, I am trying to find the RIGHT stylist to do it. Wish me luck. =)

  • So I'm a subscriber to your channel, but I never before watched this vid, and I must say I cried tears of joy for you when you finally looked in the mirror and saw your new do!!! It really brought out the beauty of your face and made you look so much more mature in an ANTM way! I wish I could remember my first reaction when I did the BC 6 years ago. I loved the whole experience and I'm thinking about doing it again in about 3 years... Glad you shared this with us!!!

  • So beautiful....

  • awesome video! Im so late but I love this!! Wish I had mines on tape:-)

  • Im so nervous but I believe I can do it at 18!! Im excited whew

  • Love your vid. I BC'd in January, I let my husband have the honors of cutting it off (he's a professional barber). I SCREAMED through the whole process, LOL, I still have my hair in a baggy on my dresser.

  • OMG girl you brought me to tears!! I am currently going through transition now and I am trying to avoid the BC but your hair looked great! You are very inspirational and I loved how you didn't cry!!! Mad respect sista!

  • Omg i cried....i could never chop my hair like that ...my mother would literally disown me till it grew back if she didnt kill me my family is very superstious about cutting hair

  • its crazy how we are suprised at how our NATURAL hair looks like. like we were born eith it but got stuck in the perm so long we dont even know how our real hair looks...its sad but girl on the positive note it looks good and good luck on a journey =] i did BC here in afghanistan

  • i BC'd last month and it was the best decision i made . i feel so free and felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders, im 20 and ive been getting relaxers since i was 4 but i am so glad i decided to give them up no more sitting in the salon for hours no more limp hair and my har is SO curly and thick and full i love it. but i couldnt have done it without your inspiration. thank you :)

  • I'm a new subscriber and had to subscribe to you, i just created an account in order to do that. So 7 years later and freshly relaxed, I am now transitioning again! It's just not worth it having a relaxer. You are my inspiration and this time i am sticking to my guns! Do you have a personal email so i can email you my story with pic enclosed? I need advice... Hope to hear from you. Take care beautiful

  • You're young yet so brave, but your smile throughout made me cry and laugh at the same time. I'm a new subscriber and i have has struggles throughout my life of hair. I'm 30 now and i did do the big chop when i was 22 and you'll never believe i gre my hair to my shoulders but i didn't feel attractive in my natural hair, i didn't know how to style it to suit my face and didn't know how to define my curls..SO WHAT DID I DO...Relaxed again 10 weeks ago AND I HATE IT AND WHAT IT DOES TO OUR HAIR!

  • I'm sitting here trying not to cry. That took courage. You go girl! I'm transitioning now. it's been almost three months since my last perm. But thank God my hair is already short except for the front part. And i'm still holding on to that! LOL! I said I will cut it once the back growns out, I think:-) You inspire me! Thank you!

  • All I can say is amazing!...thanks for letting me experience this with you! I am sure now more than ever that im ready to my big BC...thanks again you look fab

  • Aw yea. An awesome looking afro.

Who doesn't love afro's? They're like in the top tier of hairstyles.

  • I just did my BC a month ago and i love it. i did mine myself and after the first snip i looked in the mirror like "OMG did i really just do that" im so happy i did.

  • omg!!! watching this video and seeing where you are 2 years later is such an inspiration!! my sister and i are transitioning and your videos give us hope, amazing advice, and the drive to continue on this amazing journey. thanks so much for that!! im now looking forward to my BC :)

  • I'm 14 and can't wait to BC! :)

  • After years of contiplating, I went natural too, so I truly identify with the feelings you felt when you did it...it is a empowering moment and a weight off to feel so free. I get so many compliments and I love it. You Look good girl!

  • I'm doing my BC today!!!! Wish me luck!!!!

  • No i BCed In May 2011

  • Im 13 , Natural , & Lovin It! :)

  • @TwinleToes24 were you always natural?

  • love it!! I am going to do the big c in a few months....i MUST do it cause it seems so liberating!!

  • Your hair is soooooo cute! How long did you transition before you did the big chop?

  • wow, perfect editing. &you're gorgeous :)

  • WOW!! I've been struggling with thos for a few months now. Ur video made me want to do it now more than ever. I made my appt for this Wednesday. 8/10/11. The thing that help to make the deicsion was hearing the song that a played at my wedding (K- Jon Out There on the Ocean). THX BTW Your hair looks good too ;o)

  • Omg! I really wouldve cried! lol You are soo brave girl!! My eyes were watering and thats not even my hair on the floor! woooo! But it looks amazing and of course you can still rock it!

  • Why don't stylist put conditioner on the hair so they can see the permed hair versus the natural hair?? That's what I did when I did my B.C.

  • cute, i think i'll do mine three months later after i take out my kinky twists :)

  • I made the decision to go natural two weeks ago after a friend, who has natural hair, showed me some youtube videoos. I then chopped off almost three inches! I then decided to go for the big chop only three days ago and have no regrets. I even made my first video just because I was so inspired!

  • i have been transitioning for a year now nd its hard especially wen u see all the permed hair fall out nd break off nd u start to think wtf is wrong wit my hair!! im not goin to do a bc cuz im just too scared but wat do u put inn yo hair to grow it out nd keep it soft?

  • Been transitioning for 7 months now. Not too much growth and all of my permed hair's been falling off. Still scared to do the BC. Kinda embarrassed too cause my hair is in a bad condition right now *sniff*. but you have wonderful hair girl! And even the cut looks good on you

  • I giggled the entire time I chopped

  • you look absolutely stunning and I am really inspired by you. I have made the decision to go natural and im not going to say everyone in my family is against me they are all "perm heads" and thinks without a perm your hair is considered 'NAPPY' . My 10yo daughter has been natural for a year now and her hair was really damaged and broken off and wasn't much I could do with it. I never gave her the BC because like I said her hair was already short and to cut it she would have been bald,

  • so i just gave her monthly trims. She has also inspired me to go natural. Thanks so much for your vids!!!

  • Hi, I'm 15 and I'm transitioning. Been doing it for 2 months. But it's really hard for meh because my hair is short and not growing and I just want to cut it off but my mom won't let me! What should I do? And also how long did it take you to grow it this long?

  • i just did my big chop and love it ... but it takes some getting use to you actually have to care for it more than permed hair

  • Niiiice!!! I've been thinking bout goin natural for a whiiiiile! My best friend did it and her hair looks GREAT! I just got mine cut into a short angled bob above my shoulders and it wasn't bad! I think I'm ready to start the transitioning process & go ALL THE WAY! LoL Your video was a great help & inspiration!!! :))

  • I saw this, I cried and I snipped all my hair off. That was in 2010, it's been a while and I'm so glad, trust me you will find curls you never had and wonder why you decided to perm once you know how to take care of it.

  • your hair really thick and pretty

  • JUST GOT MINE CUT 2WEEKS AGO.. I ALMOST CRIED WHEN YR STYLIST DID THE REVEAL.... LUVIN IT !!!

  • Wow!........oh, my goodness!.. wwwwoooooww! lol!! xD I can tell you were in shock. :D Congrats on the bc! that's alot of hair for a bc! ;)

  • I'm looking for a good place to take my 9 year old daughter is this in Atlanta if so where. Thank You

  • this was so brave

  • ive been to that salon!! i love them!!! is mikemike still there??

  • I cried when you were turning around to see it...how about the morning after I saw this video I got mine cut. It's been 3 months to the day, which is why I'm revisiting this video. Thanks ^_^

  • For all the ladies wanting to natural but afraid don't sweat. As a kid my mum banned me from relaxing until I was 18 and now 7 years past that barrier I've still remained natural. I was teased for my picky head and struggled to style but it was no biggy and now I know how to style, take care of and enjoy my hair. What took me 25 year journey will only take you guys 4 years!

  • i have been contemplating this... I WILL!

  • damn girl..i wud've been pissed all dat hair but i guess its for the better!

  • This looks really good on you, rock it girl.

  • doin my BC this thursday!

  • you had a lot of growth to just have transitioned for four months

  • i want to do it soooooooooooo bad!!! need to figure out what do next after master style, when to wash, what to use nada.. lonely ponytail always so boring.... i need some help for real!

  • i did my big chop friday :) i feel soooo much better. :) btw, your hair is beatiful :)

  • Wow I am African American male and yes the New York article brought me here, but I am surprise at the number of women who are afraid to go natural because of their family. My family has always promoted choice for the women so it's unusual for me to see so many women/girls afraid to express their birth right. I love natural hair-it takes confidence and accepting of self. It's beautiful it has a bounce that perm hair just doesn't to me. I love natural-I know many of my peers do not but they are s

  • @Fatmanunk its not just afraid because of family , some of us never handle natural hair and we have such long perm hair dont want to do big chop , but i am transitioning because i rather to have real hair than false hair , i am never a fan of false hair

  • @Fatmanunk .I agree, Natural Hair is sooo Beautiful, too bad so many of us are programmed to think otherwise and don't even know it !!! Not to mention the white stuff you have to wear Gloves to apply, hmmmm...

  • @Nikkimae2003 what movie maker do u use?

  • Where is your hair stylist located?

  • STUNNING! This length is perfect on you!

  • i love this!!! Being 17 and still in high school im soooo scared to chop all my hair off. so far its been 6 months and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH MY HAIR!! -______-. my hair looks soo thin and its depressing. i just want to cut it all off. :)

  • @17shanklin I went natural when I was 16 and still in high school. Do it! Maybe do it over summer break and come back with an awesome new 'do and a new personal style to match!

  • @17shanklin wow i'm 17 and went natural about a year and a half ago. You should do it, trust me, its worth it. You get a lot of attension and its worth a lot in the long run. i'm so happy i went natural. you don't have to cut off all of your hair at once. i transitioned for a year and a half, and then cut mine off. Check out cocoa89 and fusionofcultures, they are the best long time transitioners EVER. Good luck chica.

  • You are so...effing brave!

  • it looks so soft!!!and it's so GORGEOUS on you!

  • i jus did my big chop 2day n i luv it soooo much <3

  • It looks so nice!!!! You trully look beautiful !!! Keep the vids coming.

  • I love the video and I was sitting up in my room thinking bout the BC and thanxs to u im going to do it.

  • How long did you transition for before you did the big chop?

  • Thanks for sharing :) super inspirational!

  • Very inspirational! I have been transitioning for a year and 2 months. I will be doing the BC the day I reach my 2 year mark! Love it girl!

  • wow....... this vidoe is awesome....... mae, u are a living inspiration to me, fa real!!!! and i'm currently in my " transitioning" phase. so good so far. this video has gave me the courage to contnue, untill i eventually do the BIG CHOP!!! i ain't scared anymore! love ur videos, keep up the good work, hon.

  • iam 15 and i want to go natural so bad every time my relaxed hair grows it breaks,i keep asking can i go natural but my stylist and mother keeps telling me that i dont have the right kind of hair to....any advice.please somebody, anybody help me,because i really want to but im kinda scared on after i chop it all of

  • @MISSHAPPY243 everyone's natural hair is beautiful and unique. There's no "right kind of hair" to go natural with. I say do what you want to do, after all it is your hair! But be sure that this is what you want to do especially at 15. I waited until I was out of high school to go natural myself. I just did the BC I'm 19. But good luck on whatever you decide! HTH!!

  • @MISSHAPPY243 coming from a 17 y old 2 year natural. Just do it :) I know everyone's telling you you can't. DON't Believe them. Then 15, Everyone told me( including Family) how nappy my hair was, how much they didn't like it or How i need to get it straightened or "done". Now It's down my back. They can't stop touching it or complimenting how nice it is. It does pay off in the long run. You'll always have jealous haters, but they don't matter. YOU want it bad, your going to go for it.

  • @KagendaK thank you so much thats why i have continued to go natural i dnt really care what others are going to say because its my hair and i know i will love it more than my relaxed hair!!

  • Almost brought me to tears....at my desk at work...like a damn fool. There are so many emotions attached to our hair as women of color, and I've wanted to go natural for so long. I'm still a relaxed girl, and I just don't know where to begin. I work in a flexible work environment but I feel so strange going natural especially since everyone thinks my clip ins are my real hair. I'm going to try....you've given me inspiration

  • @moxiekryssii You can do it my sistah! Let me encourage you,its like getting to know a part of you you never knew existed,I've been natural abt a year,I remember when i was toying with the idea,I was definitely afraid as well wondered how i wld look and what ppl wld say,i got to the point i really didnt care what they wld think and i did my big chop, you're right it was emotional and almost brought me to tears,I looked in the mirror,it was ME,unaltered and beautiful.Be proud of your crown!

  • @moxiekryssii Im 14, and decided to go natural the day after my 8th grade graduatin. i transition for a year and cut my hair june 2011. Im now 5 months natural. I have my hair in extentions and i cant wait to see my hair growth. i wish you the best of luck! :)

  • Girlllll this is so cute!!!!

  • Hey mae where'd you get your big chop done in atlanta..?

  • My BC was last week, i feel great !

  • omg you look GORGEOUS!!!! I have been considering for a long time to go natural, i usually keep my hair short and relaxed and after seeing this i think i'm coming to the point where i think its something i need to do for myself. Bravo to you!

  • Beautiful!

  • Thanks for posting! keep giving us girls inspiration and motivation.

  • its crazy that i transitioned for 2 yrs and went back to a perm and then i started to transition for four month but once i saw ur video i went straight to the bathroom and big chop ....i had my twa for a month now :-)

  • Hey girl, wow, congratulations on your BC till now. WoW, you look A-mazing. I am super excited for you! Thank you so much for being so vulnerable and honest with your audience. I really hope that you know the Lord Jesus Christ for He is the giver of everything good including your beauty. God bless you 2 Timothy 2:15 and 1 Peter 3: 4

  • You have a great attitude!

  • @bubblegumgirl09 I feel the same way as you, I think it will be a stress reliever for us both.

  • loved it!

  • Omg! I hope when I do the big chop i look as cute as u do with ur mini fro! it fits your face shape, now my face is oval shaped and long, so idk how I'm going to look with my hair that short--but I've been transitioning for 8 months now, and I just got my last weave to let it gro even longer.

  • really brave! it looks good, im in the process of going natural but i dnt think i cud handle the BC

  • Beautiful! I love it!

  • It looks really good. I thinking of doing mine real soon!!!

  • I've been transitioning for 5 months and I plan to BC in May...OMG i hope i have the same reaction as you....You have such a good attitude:)

  • I watched this October 2009 and cut my hair the same day! Trust me, it is sooo worth it. And its just hair guys. Itll grow no matter what :)

  • i do it every few yrs i luv it WHEN UR CUTE IT MATTERS NOT WHAT U DO WITH UR HAIR ........ ITS ONLY HAIR IT WILL GROW BACK

  • I'm crying...... :) I want to go natural, been trying to make that decision for awhile now. I must.

  • @Akmamiful Me too! I been putting it off but nah...I have to do it

  • @Akmamiful If you really want it gor for it, make sure you do it for yourself...... But it's a beautiful thing. I am currently transition , im so excited

  • @Akmamiful You're not alone girl! I want to go natural so bad, but afraid how my family will react and treat me!

  • you're so encouraging!

  • omg i shed a tear like iut was my hair

  • Hi I live in the ATL area what salon is this (I really need a natural stylist) most of these natural salon's here are sooooo expensive.

  • I've had my hair shorter than that but it's always been relaxed and now that I have a short bob and have been transitioning since oct 2010, I think I'm ready to take the dive and BIG CHOP! This video is so encouraging and that's what going natural is about - going for it!
