martisara38, listen to your cassette mate, what you have is a "moment" there, a moment not many have the priveledge of having, embrace it, im sure there will be pain, but that will lead to joy, go girl! x
My cousin was diagnosed with leukemia when this was first shown. He died a few years later aged just 26. I used to go to their house after work as a 16 year old and watch fame. I remember watching this soon after his diagnosis it and makes me cry every time i hear it!!
I was like 10 yrs old when I saw Kids from Fame series on Dutch tv. From the first episode I was already fan! I liked Leroy, so I started to follow ballet myself ... The only boy in the whole north part of the Netherlands!
God I loved this so much. I played it constantly and watched every Friday evening without fail. I ended up going into West End Theatre Musicals as career because of this show. Happy happy times and such memories. Thanks for posting :)
I love Fame and have since the 80s. As a teen, I was often bullied for being different.. every wk I'd watch fame and just for an hour each week it would all go away. Im so thankful to the Ovation network thats now running fame. Bruno was my faorite but rest in peace Gene Anthony Ray who inspired me to dance
WOW we had a disco every other week at our school adn when they played this all teh kids ran to the steps adn stood on them like the stage adn we waved our hands pretending we had cigarette lighters! "wildfire disco" those were the days
Wow. Just learned that the actor retiring was dying of cancer and being written as retiring.. now you look closely u see members of the cast crying 1/2 way through and onward... it wasnt acting.
1:27 some singing voice on montgomery. never understood why he didnt branch out on his own with a recording contract after this. god i loved this song. loved fame. good times.

Trust me i am 43 and sitting here with a tear in my eye, i lost my brother 4 monthes ago and this is now the 4th time i have listen to this it brings back so many good memories
Dojulan, when I think of this song, I remember them singing for Bruno in a later season. His dad died of a heart attack and he had to quit school to get a job. Such a pretty song.
this is our finale to our spring concert every year, this past year our chorus teacher passed. its ironic the meaning of the song and who theyre singing it to in the show, compared to who we sang it to...rip<3
I remember playing this song on my casette player and telling my dad how beautiful it was, and how it was about a man that was dying, never knowing that my own dad knew he was dying of blood cancer.. He passed in 1983..It brings back such sad memories of the time I said that to him..
This episode was called by Carol Mayo Jenkins( Miss Sherwood ) her favorite because it was a tribute to Michael Toma who was dying of Lung Cancer . It was one of my favorite episodes as well . I rediscovered this series after almost 30 years and have seasons 1&2 on DVD (only ones ever released) It was television that was well done and that a family could watch together.
i used to absolutely love Fame,i have the first series on dvd and very often get it out,wen im bored,it seems like only yesterday,im 42 now so a long time ago.xx
i remember singing this song with my mum when i was 14 (im now 42) and recording it on a casette (remember them?) a few months later she died, i still have the casette but cant bear to play it............................thank you so much for the person who put this on, youv taken me back to happier times X

@martisara38 I can imagine how difficult it is.Its a happy/sad song anyway+the link with your mum makes it so hard.Music is a short cut to emotions which cn be good and bad.If it helps to listen to a piece of music that takes u back listen to it,if it hurts dont feel bad about waiting unl a time when its easier. Its not avoidance its about making life easier.x
This was the song on the radio when I found out that I had lost a loved family member. Play it when I am down as it gives me a lift. She would so give me a huge kick up the butt for feeling low! Go on, get your tape out and play it. You will cry but you will laugh too.
@martisara38 Play the casette, sing along as you did when first recorded the song, you may be upset, but you mum will be singing along with you both on the tape as well as in spirit.
Wow,I remember watching fame years ago,and this song is so close to my heart,i cant explain except the actor here was dieing from cancer,my parents died of cancer 10 years apart and its been 4 years since my mother past away, and every time i listen to this song i admit i have a tear in my eye,its so in-lighting and if you listen to the words it will explain it self.
I like to thank the person who uploaded this, you have given me another chance to feel that i always wanted!
This one song is so much better than every Glee and High school Musical song all put together. this is such an amazing song, sorry but could anyone explain about the title 'Mr Crandall's Goodbye' i wasnt born when this was a tv series.
This is from the last episode of season 1 in which one of the teachers was going to get cut due to budget cuts at the school. However this was written in because Michael Thoma the actor who played Mr Crandall, was coming to the end of a long battle with cancer. The cast performed this as a tribute to the character, but in actuality it was their way of expressing their feelings towards him. He died shortly after this. It was a very emotional episode.
@PeteStakk Thank you for the info regarding this episode. I remember this like it was yesterday and by far the best song they did. Just bought series 1 & 2 off Amazon for my own kids to enjoy! Best.
@PeteStakk i remember reading that the cast had trouble holding back the tears knowing the man didnt have long to live and had to be professional to do the final take. i think you can see the emotion!
What a beautiful tribute R.I.P Mr. Crandall I know that's not your real name. I love this song and you can see all the love on the students and teachers faces. Fame was the best. I used to watch it every week.
This song has so much meaning for the time, I remember the episode like it was yesterday brings goose pimplies up. Great show loved it like someone said the week stopped to watch this. Im getting old but id watch it all again if they ran it from the start!
@soundasfuk Oh so sorry to read about your sister, all the strength for you,! And if this song can make you cry, so be it. There is always someone who's crying at the same time, sometimes at the other side of the world, over the same song. You are not alone! Take care! Love, Florence
@fvanoirschot I'll take your kind words also, Florence. I lost my big sister 3 weeks ago. I played this song because it takes me back to when things were simpler and amazing. What you said is unbelievably strengthening. Take care.
@laycock483 Brought back meeories of my childhood, and of the times and people I miss. Always brings a tear to my eye. Your HSM and Glee will never move me quite like ths series used to.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS.LIFE STOPPED EVERY WEEK TO WATCH FAME.GOD BLESS LEEROY AND MR CRANDALL.I FEEL NOSTALGIC AS I WRITE THIS FOR A WONDERFUL WONDERFUL TIME IN MY LIFE.OH HOW I WISH I WAS BACK THERE

Fantastic & Sad! .......A member of Singers Rechoired Worthing West Sussex....
I cry buckets during this song. I love to sing along to it though at home. RIP Michael Thoma (who played the beautiful Mr. Crandall). He will truly be missed.
He looks older than 41 years old. I can't imagine how it felt to have the cast from fame sing to you knowing that you don't have long to live. My last name used to be Crandall.. I got remarried and so of course it changed. Fame was one of the best shows on t.v. My ex boyfriend lived in New York, New York and the good fortune of going to the school of arts there where he took piano lessons. He is really good and when I listen to him play the keyboard I get goose bumps. Thanks for uploading this.
so moving from the cast and crew and all involved in this video mr cranall was dying of cancer in real life and this was a final thank u from his fellow actor friends.. this i i finds so moving and really sad as i loved the programme in the early 80s xxxx
This is supposed to be Mr Crandall's goodbye - but to be honest, I don't remember him from any episode prior to this one. Worse than that, at the end of this episode, his departure is CANCELLED. But we still never see or hear anything of him again. (In real life, the actor was terminally ill when they filmed this.)
I live in New Zealand but if you look in your bookstore or order it through one, you should be able to get Season one which this song was on....very sad song.......but oh so beautiful.
Good luck finding it, I have never been able to track down Season Two here. :(
debbie allen and fame cast i loved ur programme coco fenandez leroy and danny were also fab anyone know what coco and danny are up2 i hears leroy actor passed away though only rumoured any info would be appreciated many thanx xxx
As I understand it - when NBC wanted to stop production in the US - the BBC still wanted episodes to air in the UK ...I believe that extra shows were shot for them. The new movie might bring a revival of the original 'kids from Fame'. THIS is probably the most emotional song in the series. All those memories!
Wow, I haven't heard THAT song for over 25 years. Knew abt the backstory of the actor dying and it DID add a legitimacy to the performance of an entire cast singing THEIR farewell tribute to a colleague. Wasn't aware this song was played Albert Hague's (Shorofsky) funeral.
Someone asked who wrote the song. I beleive it was Carole Bayer Sager. Some of the songs from the show I recall as being a bit "cheesy" but THIS song deserves to be remembered.
@CedrictheDragon Not at the dying actor in THIS scene (Michael Thoma's) funeral but a few years later at the funeral of another cast member, Albert Hague - the elderly bearded gent you can see amongst the assembled cast. Apparently, he requested this song which is interesting as he himself had a distinguished career writing for Broadway
Wow - this brings back some terrific memories...I remember making sure I was home Thursday nights not to miss Fame....I wish there were shows like this on now....
I Had To Sing This For My Dance Show , Front Row Out Of All The Big Ones Aswell. I Love This Song And It Is Better When You Sing It Than Listen Too It.
Such an underaterted song! Gets me everytime! The episode was sad enough and then you learnt that Mr Crandall was dying from cancer in real life and this was the cast saying goodbye for real! Albert Hague who played Shorofsky had this played at his funeral (another sad twist to the story).
a tv show called Fame that was on in the early 80s. The actor Michael Thoma playing the teacher was dying form cancer and it was his last time on the show. So the tears you see are real.
Leroy, (Gene Anthony Ray) died not long after this...

mr. crandall was dying of cancer in real life, that's why he and the cast were so moved, very touching.

Thanks to whoever dug this one up.

Was this played at the actors funual it'self you said?
CedrictheDragon 2 years ago
@CedrictheDragon Not at the dying actor in THIS scene (Michael Thoma's) funeral but a few years later at the funeral of another cast member, Albert Hague - the elderly bearded gent you can see amongst the assembled cast. Apparently, he requested this song which is interesting as he himself had a distinguished career writing for Broadway

carole bayer sager

csh 2 years ago
Such an underaterted song! Gets me everytime! The episode was sad enough and then you learnt that Mr Crandall was dying from cancer in real life and this was the cast saying goodbye for real! Albert Hague who played Shorofsky had this played at his funeral (another sad twist to the story).

a tv show called Fame that was on in the early 80s. The actor Michael Thoma playing the teacher was dying form cancer and it was his last time on the show. So the tears you see are real.
