Another note, I had never thought about going to the car boot for camera equipment, I will definitely have to try that out one day, if you can get lenses for £6, I may as well try :)
Great video, I am getting a chinon 200mm lens, and i am getting a m42 adapter for my eos 600d, I always read how lenses are an investment, and how old lenses are as good as new, so these adapters are very useful in my mind
very interesting tip to know, if I should venture to buy a Canon Rebel, assuming here a moment that it'll also work on that model.
I have a question, if you please have a minute: I was talking to my brother and a friend, oh about two years ago, and I asked them if they knew if one could convert an old, ( let's say a Nikon F2 or Canon 35mm,..titanium metal body,) to digital by some kind of 'digital film plate adapter,' (my term for it,) which would take the place of film like a CCD w RAM ? thxu

lens for Praktica B mount are also cheap and you can change it faser than the screw mount lens. I have Pentacon 50 f1,8 and Pentaco 28mm f 2,8 with PB mount
The only problem with PB lenses is that you're limited to Pentacon lenses. M42 lenses came out from a variety of sources from cheaper Pentacon and Prinzflex lenses right up to the gorgeous Zeiss lenses.
Very interesting array of lenses, bet you can take some very nice shots with that little lot, have you got any posted on internet?? would be nice to see the results.
i'm glad i found your video! i am looking to do the reverse and put some of my eos lenses on my hv20 camcorder. it has a thread attachment. any advice? the only stuff i can find is that super expensive stuff, but just want the ring so i can put manual lenses on.
When you say M42 mount, is that the same as a Pentax Kmount. Would I still have to bodge the pentax lens to get it to fit on a canon eos 500d even with adaptor?
@AndyM563 a M42 lens can go in a pentax K mount with an adapter ring but not the other way round. PK lenses would have to have the protruding aperture lever snipped off the rear of the lens before it can be fitted to a canon, making the lens useless to Pentax users
@chungdha You just save me, $100 dollars and a 2 hour trip. ( I was about to buy 7 kodak lenses thinking they gonna fit on a M42 adapter.) Thanks a lot.
how does exposure work when using m42 lenses, when you're in aperture priority and you adjust aperture does the shutter speed adjust automatically? or do you have to set everything manually
I currently shoot pentax, but am interested in the new 7d, primarily for video work- and it would be nice to know I could use my pentax lenses on it
I have a bunch of old Pentax M42 lenses left to me by my grandfather with his Yashica TL Electro, and this video convinced me to buy the adapter for my Rebel T1i. I only hope it works in video mode too! Great job.
The second lens is a Pentacon auto 2.8/29. Not 28 mm, but 29. ;-) Good video though, well explained. Personally I prefer the non-flange adapter, I use the A/M switch to close aperture just before taking the picture.
very helpful. a shame a watched it after i bought an adaptor of ebay and it didn't have the aperture pinning thing :) need to return and buy a proper one then. macro rings work like this - the more you put on the closer ir will be able to focus
This is great information!!....I have a Canon 20D EOS and i have a 70-220mm auto-zoom Pentax mount lens that I used on my old Mamiya 35mm...and have been told by a reputable camera store here in Canada, that an adapter for this lens would cost about $200. I suspect that they just want me to buy one of their lenses!! So thank you for this information, I will endeavor to find an adapter for my old lens, which I love!!!
Bear in mind also a 2x teleconverter will rob you of 2 full stops of light, which means the exposure has to be 4 times as long which can be seriously slow.
So in effect the min aperture of f4.5 suddenly becomes something like f8 or f10 or so.
A 1.4 x teleconverter is only one stop less light difference which isnt so bad
Also the image quality degrades quite noticeably on cheaper teleconverters.
thanks!I've been trying to figure out how to detach the lens from my rebel xt! :P

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a DSLR for HD video but would like to use my own 35mm Helios lenses.
Is there a LOSS in quality when using SLR lenses on DSLR due to noise or such ?

Hi,
I have a Universon 35mm f2.8 Auto lens and its iris is stuck, won't close when I turn the aperture ring.
Do you know anything about this brand of lens? I've searched far and wide and can't find any info on it.
How do you thing I could fix this? What could be a the problem?
luubiiluu 1 year ago
don't you have infinity focus problem when using m42 lens on eos?

why was this under my recommended for you i never watched a video about this
demonslayer1000 1 year ago
why didnt you buy a EF extensuion tube instead of m42 and then you would be able to use it on all your lenses
williambrodie 1 year ago
@williambrodie I could do that, but the electronic ones are too expensive for me!
scalespeeder 1 year ago
@scalespeeder I was thinking of getting an FD or M42 F2.8 28mm for my 40D because- as you said - its basically like a 50mm, to go with my 50mm1.8
is the quality as-good on these old old lenses?
Do you go to any specific car boots
williambrodie 1 year ago
@williambrodie Old Canon lenses are rare at booties - M42 tends to be the order of the day, usually on Praktica or other cheaper Film SLR's.
I'd say get a 28mm and a 50mm - the 28mm should be like a 50mm on a crop sensor, but there is a difference, and you could try both.
scalespeeder 1 year ago
@williambrodie Its much more fun this way too.

@AndyM563 Pentax K mount is not the same as M42, m42 is same a p thread mount. Kmount is Pentax K bayonet.

electriktricks 1 year ago
@electriktricks You can shoot in aperture priority mode and the camera will adjust the shutter speed for correct exposure.
I'm sure you could get a Pentax - EF adapter, just look on eBay.

pentax super takumars are top notch for image quality but everyone seems to have cottoned onto this as well so prices on Ebay are going up and up.
Bear in mind most of the adaptors have slight differences in flange thickness etc so you cant get infinity focus with some of them.

Just a few $ / £'s from the local flea markets and car-boot sales.
