His considered, yet direct when he considered called for, way of speaking coupled with a masculine flamboyance must have seemed a relative contradiction to many people- he just seemed unfailingly honest, fearless (for who was there for him to fear with his talent?) and completely brilliant. Jack Nicholson is arguably the closest that America has to Olive Reed but Reed was probably more uncompromising.
