I agree , the phrasing & accenting is good. If you can master the phrasing, you will always be able to carry it off - even if the pitch isn't quite 100%!
I just luv it! I always thought Joni Mitchell was it...then I heard Annie and a guy named Bob...over U-Tube...luv them all...but here you let the instruments have some attention and dance! luv it! Reminds me of Janet Klein...look her up on U-Tube!. Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!
I sing this one from memory, and in the ladies' range....and me a guy...go figure...ha!
I love your style and sense of time. I don't see where everyone else is complaining about pitch. You sound like you have near perfect pitch. Your fellow musicians are pretty good too and your appear to have a good rapport with them. That's important. I'd say that you're damned good.
I laugh out loud at those that comment on the "pitchiness" of this singer. Anyone who has ever sung live..or live jazz like this, would understand that this is extraordinarily difficult and requires one Hell of an ear...in my opinion, jazz phrasing like this is the "Calculus" or "Trigonometry" of singing. I say this chick has it. Good job!
If she's pitchy, she doesn't have it. It doesn't matter how complicated jazz is, if you practice enough and if you have what it takes, you can pull it off perfectly.
If people don't like her tone, thats their loss.
Personally, I think she could have rehearsed more. Its a better than average job. Her "tone" sounds like shes "speaking" to put meaning to words. Which I don't hate, but I'd prefer other methods. I don't listen to this and think "amazing voice".
harmonylover, that was very intelligently argued and I quite enjoyed your rebuttal. As far as pulling it off perfectly if there is enough practice, as you said, I'd like to say that everyone has an "off" performance occasionally, and perhaps she couldn't hear her monitors well or something...on the other hand, if it were my video of a slightly "off" night on stage, I would never post it on a public forum. And, no, you're not too harsh, this is jazz we are discussing, jazz is to be done right.
For the record, Annie Ross sings " fifth of vodka" and "A. Graham Bell", where as Joni Mitchell sings "got into the vodka" and "angry young men" in her cover of the song off her 1974 album Court and Spark.
thank you! !!! glad you like the phrasing a least!!!,
got the lyrics off line,,, they tend to be wrong sometimes...but I have been singing the correct lyrics as of late ....as far as my pitch,,,try me again sometime...cheers!! :)
Well, if you can't hit the notes right you do the song like this. Listen to Jane Monheit sing this song.

It shouldn't be sung like that :/ It's not a depressed lazy song. The melody is based off of trumpet/sax solos after all.

I think you're awesome!

Love her phrasing, but her pitch is iffy.
It's not "got into the vodka one night," it's "drank a fifth of vodka one night." Also, it's not "angry young men," it's "A. Graham Bell."

You're welcome. Your pitch is probably fine, I'm just not a big fan of live recordings. Everyone was probably blown away. You have terrific range.

@roxnonstop those lyrics were actually from the joni mitchell version... same song, just tweaked a bit
