  • To straighten out who stole what, Alton Ellis has claimed that the bassline on "The Liquidator" was stolen from this song, which makes sense as it's the oldest song where it's used. The Staple Singers were later inspired by "The Liquidator", so The Staple Singers didn't actually copy this song, but another song that had already done it (according to Wikipedia).

  • poff.....

esta rola me enknta es una de mis favoritas....si..ke...si

    i ♥rock stedy

  • Anyone else agree with me that Staple Singers I'll Take You There completely ripped off the bassline (but changing just a few notes here and there) of this tune? Youtube it if you dont know the group or song.

  • Sort of. But it went via Liquidator.

  • the beats are close but i really can't say for sure it's a rip off. i listened as keenly as i could, sometimes simultaneously, back and forth, even swithching the lyrics on alton's onto the staple's and vice versa but could not find that distinct copy. both songs are lovely.

  • Nah mate look up The Liquidator. The bassline is there.

  • Liquidator came after this song. This was '66 Liquidator was '69. That was (from a bassline point of view) a rip off of this song too although a great song

  • Im doing some research for a school assignment.

Would anybody consider this the first Rocksteady song, as it has been noted by many?

  • Although Alton Ellis is sometimes said to be the father of rocksteady for "Girl I've Got a Date", other candidates for the first rocksteady single include "Take It Easy" by Hopeton Lewis, "Tougher Than Tough" by Derrick Morgan and "Hold Them" by Roy Shirley.

In a Jamaican radio interview, pianist Gladstone Anderson said that bandleader Lynn Taitt was the man who slowed down the ska beat during a "Take It Easy" recording session to create Rocksteady.

  • It's said that the drummer at that time said "This one ya really rock" thus creating the sound and term rocksteady.

Hope this helps with your assignment.

  • Thanks for your reply brown.

Currently I'm listening to a various songs around the period ska made its shift in sound and evolved into Rocksteady.

I'm paying particular attention to a difference in sounds ..."slowed tempo, prominent bassline."

It seems as if 'Tougher than tough" would have been the bridging the gap between the two genres, but 'Girl I've got a date" has a firm standing as an official Rocksteady hit. These are my views what do you think?

  • the same said Jackie Mitto about he slowed down the ska beat,

really a lot of jamaican musicians who are involved in these period of ska turns rocksteady turns reggae say that are the creators of rocksteady, the same happens with the creator of ska or reggae. I think that no exist "the first song of the genre" but a slow transformation of all musicians.

  • top,top top chooon. one of the finest vocalists of all time. great rocksteady beat too. big love a.e. xxrip.

  • Classic from the late great father Alton.

Anyone else notice how the Staple Singers "Come fly with me" totally ripped off the bassline from this tune? Youtube it if you dont believe me!!

  • free as a bird in the trees, girl i got a date, classic bun tune maadddd, father ellis drop it madly

  • Walk good Alton ...You were one of Jamaica's Finest Musical Icons!

  • Thank you U roy for introducing me to this Alton Ellis song (RIP Alton) I Love this track.

  • SUPER SONG!
