@payijo :) exactly its slow enough to trick the zobies, if bad human smell wont get out of it we are safe :) moving safe house, have to build some thing like this :) without 30 years bank credit, but redesign this, coz these are expensive.
IMHO the design lacks "stackability" to compile/assemble like Leggos™ otherwize a convertable pick up truck. or a Van do that now at 90 MPH. Great start though. The project must have been fun to design/build. I love the autonomy of it - being off the grid, very "Green"!! Do more, do more. Run with it.
imm pretty sure they r gonna make it like a car soon or something faster cause this is like 60km in a week-.- i walk 17times faster than that maybe even more
Well, it depends how far your job is, but yes.. Pretty much :) It can walk like 60m/h.. So if you sleep 8 hours, this thingie walks only 480m. Not even half a kilometer. But, if you start moving right when you get home (if you get home right after your job) then there is quite a possibility that you will make it. If your job is very near of course. But they said that the house is not meant for living anyways. It's useful for the floods and stuff like that.
About the size of my walk-in closet, so its more like a walking room not a walking house. I got a single axle camping trailer with a hitch i can move faster than that with my bare hands, and its insulated, with a toilet, mini kitchen, ac, and 60gal.water. Hell, all i need is solar panels. This is not a new creation or magnificent scientific breakthrough. End result: More wasted grant money. Could have been used to pimp the white van that drove by.
In no way is this a waste of money. Judging from the size of that thing, I think it can be held up with 4 wheels instead of 6. If they are upright and attached to axles they may even even roll. Now add some sort of motor and you can possibly achieve freeway speeds. I think we have the future right here. I love art, but this is no Theo Jansen. It's a WTF were you thinking?
no property taxes. walk your house to a new lot all the time. no mortgages =). idk. its interesting. that thing is so small though youd be better off just getting a camper. duhh.
Pointless? Not if it's something we've never seen or thought of before, or it it evokes fresh responses that lead to other new expressions - be they artistic or practical. Current 'mobile housing' is almost totally reliant on expensive infrastructures. Walking machines can gently tread anywhere...
I don't know about you, but it has surely touched many open-minded people. Personally i love the idea of a nomadic lifestyle and bringing technology with it would just be totally awesome.
Of course it's easier to stay and live in our cities, but some people do prefer a more active life where you do things that are challenging and fun but looks utterly useless for other people.
from their website "... The structure should move at a slow pace similar to the walking speed of the human body. It is a common fact that walking often helps a person concentrate their thoughts and creates a mental state that enforces mobility of the mind. ..."
Hahaha these things kind of remind me of those giant walker mechs in Star wars. slow, huge (well this things just plain big period, its just small for a house) and strong :D
that's awesome!! it really moves from solar power! Progress stands on such kind of people. People are asking: "What 4?" sentury ago people were asking: "what for automobiles are? we have horses." it's part of future
The worrying thing is...whoever built that thing must think it's really really cool. When, all along, it's simply really really, painfully slow. Infact, I don't think I've see hydraulics work that slow anywhere before. Just imagine if JC Bamford made diggers that slow!
1;it's the thing FIRST STEPS,no moving machine was fast at the begining(and for those smart arses who are thinking about planes,we flew with ballons first!)it will go faster as it develops.
2:not mention here, the house is self-sustainable,using solar and wind as energy(the chimney is for the stove).it woun't run out of gas as it flees.
3:made by university student, with a limited budjet.more money will give better results.
4:for te woried about size, check out The Hour's video on 'Tiny Houses'.
So, why would anyone want to live in a house that small? And if it is that small, why not just use wheels? This seems like a downgrade from even the cheapest RV you could buy.
Not toooo sure where the lads are going with this idea, - all I'll say is that the Transit Van that pulls up the lane way at the end of the video kind'a makes an unintential 'look at me, I can go anywhere, joke / swipe' at the walker. - A bit more info here on youtube about the concept may intice me to click the link provided. Anyhow, nice to see something ...eh....erm.... odd.
this thing could be made faster. You have to remember that this was made by mit students and with the help of some type hydrolics experts and things like that this thing could probably be useful
This is soooooooooooo funny! LOL! ...so this is the house that's supposed to get away from flood? And by that they meant a foot-deep flood. The flood would have long subsided when this thing reach a quarter of it's destination.

a homeless house! wow, exactly what the world needs! just imagine hundreds of thousands or millions of these suckers roaming around cobblestone superhighways in our environmentally sustainable future. and what it could do for the homeless! amazing.. really great!
According to the article this is what it does: It collects energy from its surroundings using solar cells and small windmills. I can't relate to the comments so far. A walking house has many distinct advantages:
1) Legs can take you places wheels cannot. Places without roads or on paths ridden with obstacles. Like most of the earth outside of cities. And Mars.
2) It doesn't require a driver. It's slow enough that it could employ very basic AI to avoid very large obstacles, like giant boulders or pits.
3) Scarcity of resources might require steady migration.
4) Colonies on other planets might need to follow sunlight.
