DT's best "non-Prog" song (it's not a "ballad", and "Hollow Years" would get that title) and unfortunately something I highly doubt they'd be able to write currently... there are no 5-minute solo/unison/harmony runs in it. ;-)
@Ben802 My answer would be: "FUCK, OF COURSE, I WOULD LIKE!", DT should try to combine this kind of stuff with their more complex and technical songs!.
in this past week this song was to me nothing more than a great tune....now it gained meaning in my life...amazing how simple events can give you a fresh perspective in a song as powerful as this
well, it's not my intention to compare and artist with another one....I just think this song is really amazing. I close my eyes in the moment I ever heard....All the feelings from DT is right now here in Speak to me I guess!
dream theater write this style of music so well, makes you wonder why they dont bring out a whole album of similar material. I would love to see them write an album with 10,11 songs rather than the usual 7 or 8
that's the most amazing Dream Theater ballad I ever heard!!...that's my favorite one....I like the way LaBrie puts all his feelings in this song!...It sounds like U2 or Keane..yeah I already know anyone else could think "that's a lie!" but however I just realized of this about two months ago...
Sorry....I didn't realise....it sounds better than KEANE!!...it sounds DREAM THEATER...a perfect song like this couldn't be like Keane song!...that's the reason I like Dream Theater!...that's a perfect song!...sorry for my last answer...I already changed my mind... ^^
Thus proving that behind all of the complex arrangements and technical passages, Dream Theater are GREAT SONGWRITERS. To those who say there are no emotions and all they do is play fast, keep in mind that songs as long as the ones they normally write, in order to work must, above all, be EXTREMELY well-written and driven by feel.
@EndeavorLeadGtr the problem is, their new music is not driven by feel. It's musical gymnastics and nothing more. The criticism is valid and well deserved. There are those who reinvent and move forward, than there are those who regress. No one in their right mind would question their musicianship, but to question their new music is once again valid and not devoid of merit.
U2 was actually one of the major influences in this song. I listened to the commentary on this DVD and i think they said it was written after watching...a U2 movie...lol i forget which one
This particular performance wasn't unplugged. Somebody mislabeled it. This concert had two parts, one was an unplugged section while the other was normal. The concert was a special fan club thing that lasted about 4 hours.

@TheGodofguitar17 Cleaning out the closet. It was release (exclusively i think) for the members of Dream Theater International Fan Club in 1999.

@TheGodofguitar17 This song was written during the Falling Into Infinity sessions.... released later as part of Falling Into Infinity Demos

Thank you for that "unplugged" video! It's a whole new dimmension of DT that's opening up for me, although I am a fan for almost ten years now.
And I still think, that Sherinian was a great impulse for the band that time.

Dream Theater are allowed to have been influenced by U2 without mimicing their sound, they just incorporated the U2 sound into a Dream Theater song.
