Very well thought out for an urban environment. i like this very much. the thought you put into your vids is very evident. keep up the great work. i will keep my rural tin in my GHB, and this is a great idea for daily carry. All the good ideas have already been mentioned.
I'm very new to all this, but I've enjoyed--and learned from your videos. I also live in an urban area with little use for fishing line, etc., so I wanted to build my own urban kit. I' trying out one of those aluminum wallets, however. It is nearly the size of the Altoids tin but built to be in a back pocket. I found the small items easily fit into the wallet's slots designed for credit cards, etc. It has a latch and is advertised as water and crush proof. We'll see how it works out!
I think I'll make one of these. One thing I could suggest is a micro sd card reader. You can find one on newegg.com that is almost just as small as a micro sd card and will read from a usb port, i popped a 16gb card in one and it reads on every computer i've encountered.
suggestions: place a band around yer lighter, to prevent the lighter switch from accidently being pressed, and wasting the gas. A ranger band around the can is good to have, to keep the can shut good, and the band could be used for multipurposes. (find an old bike tube, and cut into bands) Excellent videos as always UP.
I didn't read all the comments, but another form of ID at the bottom instead of all the paper. If this is used as a "shtty day vs shtf" kit, then you're pretty much set. If this is a SHTF kit, you could manage but should have the purification tablets. Keep the condom for another use. You'll be able to find a container for water. I've been under the impression that 2 is 1 and 1 is none for everything. Have a couple of extra waterproof matches, and xtra flshlight. batteries. good video
great vid. just some thoughts and comments. you dont need the signal mirror cuz the inside looked shinny enough to use for that. you should also have a credit card. you could also put a small thing of crazy glue.
i feel ths is more of a daily use tin not a survival tin dont get me wrong this great in day to day (non-appoctlipitc) activity but i would no wannt to try to survive with this one
@donmon425 Yes, you are right. However, I feel that there is not a lot of scenarios in an urban environment that warrants carrying a tin with the more typical survival gear. I try to have a well rounded EDC that gives me a lot of options for my day to day life with supplies that I am more than likely to use. Thanks for the comment!
@donmon425 Hence the term EDC. This is an Every Day Carry pack. This is one of the best EDCs I've seen and will be updating mine with a lot of these ideas. Thanks UrbanPrepper, great job!
tooth picks? or one of those tiny disposable tooth brushes you can find real cheap. A thin mirror would be good, You never know when you need to look at yourself before a meeting or for Females to put on makeup. also something I have found to be excellent, though I don't know it it could fit, is a thin garbage bag that has been cut to fit like a poncho, I can count the times I have gotten caught in a rain storm and I am on my way to a place and don't want to arrive soaked.
I would consider a piece of a hacksaw blade for cutting through any metal in an urban envirnment, pad lock that may be blocking a source of food or shelter.
Great video! one thing from a money and EDC standpoint... I would carry a bunch of singles ($1's) as well for vending machine food and drink which is a common urban accoutrement.
My two favorites statements, diareah is a big problem and "yeah let me get my light stick out" hahahahha love it. Actually makes a crazy load of sense
I hope you're not using those condoms as birth control. The friction from the wallet and body heat will break down the latex and cause condom breakage.
Thanks for showing me your urban survival tin, great job. I will be making myself one of these real soon so I am doing my research :)
I didnt read through all your comments but some kind of tape would be helpful, say you write a note to a family member or something you could tape it to something so they could see it and it doesnt get blown away by the wind and end up on the floor.
I'd throw in a small bit of cardboard wrapped in sewing thread, with a needle run through it. Maybe a safety pin as well. And while your space is very limited, see if you can fit in a shoe lace. I have a fairly similar 'Urban' kit, but in a larger tin, and have given away 2 or 3 shoelaces when someone blew one out. I also have that same leatherman.
Very interesting. I like the decision making on the items and the practical day to day properties of this Urban kit. Not a survival kit but a practical kit. Perhaps a needle and some thread for office emergencies. Your going in my favorites. Thanks
Thats a good start and I'm glad to see people in the city thinking about prepping. I don't agree with everything you have but I'm not in your shoes. Are you able to get other city dwellers thinking about prepping?
@OutdoorChautauqua Locally or via Youtube? Most of my friends and family have no idea of my prepping. When people do see one of my bags or organization methods, they usually like it. But I don't elaborate much further. :)
Wow that is a SMALL light! But compact. I have the Streamlight Stylus 1 AAA and the 2 AAA sizes, they are also compact for a pocket, but too big for the tin. Also Imodium is a great idea, when you need it, NOW is the operative word.
@WanderingWallaby I like the pen, but I use it as a emergency/backup pen only. I have the pens in my EDC backpack that I use more often. There's not a lot of ink in the True Utility pen, so I don't think it is designed for extended use.
I always recommend, for EVERY survival tin, are a couple of those styrofoam rings that come in CD/DVD spools. They're great if you have a blister on your foot; just put the hole over the blister and it pads it all around. Just my thoughts.
I think one thing you could add is the thin ventev cell phone charger. or just as thin an extra cell phone battery to your urban kit. also a few quarters. often you cant get change and need it for parking or maybe your stranded and need a bus. just a thought. loved the idea i'm going to make one for myself now. thank you.
One thing that I think you could use is a Fresnel lens. It's about the size of a credit card and usually has about 3x magnification. I keep one in my wallet and it's come in handy a few times.
A much more compact USB drive is the Sony Micro Vault Tiny, measuring 14.5 x 2.7 x 32mm, it's amazing how flat it is. I've had mine for a few years and it works great. Google the name and you'll find it on Sony's web site.
Just wanted to thank you, I put together an Altoids Survial Tin based on your video. I did add some Dentek floss picks into my kit. This is something I normally don't have with me at work or own in general. Today after lunch I had something stuck in teeth that was driving me nuts, and I was able to take care of it quickly because i had my Altoids tin with me.
@jaredscolton1 LOL! I would be extremely curious to see if there was a news article of someone surviving some kind of emergency situation using an Altoids survival tin. I haven't seen any stories/articles...
Great video, a fewof the most important things I have in my edc that take up no space and are worth considering are a few safety pins and a label stuck to the bottom of the tin with my most used contact numbers and e-mails. Since the invention of the mobile phone it is amazing how useless we have become at remembering telephone numbers ! I also carry a sample of aftershave, just in case.
I'm in the same boat as you with the keychains. I don't like a lot of items on mine. However if you're going to fit those items in the tin, why not remove the rings to attach to your keys? It would free up so much space.
hey just one quick suggestion. since you have that usb thumb drive. I think maybe put a file on it with all your information. Like everything thats on your license. So that in the case that you did run into a survival situation and people may find you and you are either dead or too out of it to speak and maybe might not have your wallet...then they can identify you very easily. Thats what i am going to do for mine. I thought its a pretty cool idea.
I have some suggestions: Phone numbers of family and close friends written down on paper. Maybe doctor, lawyer, taxi service and such too...anyone you might need to call to get you out of a jam. If you're like me it's all on your cell phone and you don't know it by heart. A couple quarters or a prepaid calling card might help if you' ever must resort to that dinosaur of yesteryear the pay-phone.
@myth90045 I wrapped them in some small 2" x 3" ziplock bags that I got at a craft store. I rolled them up to the size of the contents and used scotch tape to keep them closed at that small size.
probably the best vid of the altoids survival kit i've seen by far. i'm wanting to put something like this together & i'm going to "borrow" some of your items :) SUBBED.
i enjoyed the video. the paper should be on the lid so its easy to get to . not the bottom of the can (let me dump out all the stuff to get to the paper and darn i forgot what i was going to wright down. 2 quarters (parking meater money) i have mine on a small binder clamp . a small amount of tape so when you finaly get to your note you can tape it (post it ) everything else was great i give this video 8 out of 10
@richardheadIII Great ideas! I'll move the paper to the top and will add the two quarters. Since making this video, I have added 1 foot of Gorilla Duct Tape. Thanks for the input!
One of the best tins I have seen, and definitely most suited to urban edc ect. Got a couple ideas from your video. Never thought about anti-squirt meds. Most original idea I've seen to date. Always wondered myself (despite still putting them in my own kits) why everyone always packs a can opener in woodland(ish) survival kits. Should be useful in an urban tin though. Thanks for the vid
I'm currently in the process of putting together a rural survival kit. As for urban items I keep a disposable lighter, a pen, a pencil and a P-38 style can opener / bottle opener combo in my wallet. I'll also add paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets when I get time.
a safty pin ? or a safty needle i don't know but it saved the day many times for me like if thi ziper waz broke and it was cold i used it sorry for my bad english
Nice vid, mate. A couple of things I'd do would be swap the anti-poop tablets for the melt in the mouth type just in case there's no potable water to hand (cos whne you need those bad boys, you need em quick!). And second. I'd add a couple of piritons in case of an unforeseen allergic reaction.
However looking at everyone else's videos, yours seems to be the most useful as I don't intend on waking up lost in the Amazon anytime soon. I don't know what all of these McGuyvers are thinking...
See, for me, I'd much prefer having things like a pen, a light, and a multitool on a keychain, because it's stuff I'm gonna want to use on a second's notice, instead of fiddling with a bunch of crap in a tin, whereas things like medicine, bandages, and water purification tablets would be better suited for the tin, because you're probably going to be willing to spend a bit more time to get to them.
@KingDavidANC Good point on the accessibility. I haven't made my normal EDC video yet, but I do carry a Streamlight Stylus Pro and Leatherman Juice S2 on me at all times, which are much more accessible. The items in this tin are backups. The pen does require the extra step of getting in the tin, but I've read reviews of some people losing them when connected to their key chain. Man, has this little pen come in handy though. I usually have my EDC bag with me, which also has pens.
OMG you have altoids mints in your altoids kit!! Of the 15 million videos I've seen on this, that's the first time lol. On a more serious note: I love that you did this video... I've been carrying an every day kit like that for awhile now, and it comes in handy on a daily basis. My favorite item in yours would have to be the picture... you were dead on about the will to live being the #1 consideration! Thanks for sharing this my friend!
@intenseangler LOL! Those 3 Altoids saved me last night at a club. I had just eaten a sandwich and ran into a business associate. I didn't want to have stank breath, and luckily I had those mints on me. Phew! :)
One small consideration might be to throw in one of the smaller variant single moist towelettes. I don't know if they have a Buffalo Wild Wings in your area but they offer complimentary moist towelettes that I take advantage of every time I go by. There are just countless times in the day when I find myself going to the bathroom just to wipe up my hands or face.
carry a piece of aluminim foil to act as a signal mirror or be able to shape it as a boiling cup. be very careful on the folds. as thin as it is it will fit.
Great Urban perspective. This creates a whole new arena for diverse kits to be developed. One thing I did with my USB drive is put a host of free ware things like Open Office, virus scanners, my bookmarks/favorites, and a file with all logins and passwords- you may even want to add files or books on survival in general. Maybe even take screen shots of maps of your local area and save them. If the Internet is down but you have power and need to find direction or navigate then that works out.
Add a small button compass. You could find yourself in an unfamiliar part of town and not be familiar with any of the streets. At night or on an overcast day you wont have the sun to help with direction. Four items I always carry in a very small nylon pouch are a peanut lighter, whistle, flashlight and compass.
@buggyboy60 Good idea. Any recommendations on mini compass brands? Most of the really small ones I've purchased are cheap and eventually become ineffective.
Throw in two alcohol wipes. Antiseptic is important and sometimes you just need to clean up! Also a least 6 inches of duct tape (and maybe more if it fits).
@mrmonkeyman50 I'll see if I can squeeze it in. I do have some alcohol wipes in my EDC bag which is always nearby. I'll try to find a mini duct tape wrapping design (a 1/2" slice of a credit card?).
Have you considered wrist or neck lanyards on the flashlight and whistle? I would think those are items you don't want to risk dropping and losing.

Well done! I like the "Will to Live" idea. Addressing the psychological aspect of survival is smart! Some suggestions:
Single edge razor blade-backup knife and weapon.
Small container of bleach or iodine to purify water, and a coffee filter for same.
Mo money--it's 2011 and stuff is expensive!
Gause pads and duct tape--more uses and make your own bandaids.
The can is also a signal mirror.
Important info--PINS, account numbers, phone, URLs, etc. In code for protection
More meds.
Good luck

i enjoyed the video. the paper should be on the lid so its easy to get to . not the bottom of the can (let me dump out all the stuff to get to the paper and darn i forgot what i was going to wright down. 2 quarters (parking meater money) i have mine on a small binder clamp . a small amount of tape so when you finaly get to your note you can tape it (post it ) everything else was great i give this video 8 out of 10
richardheadIII 9 months ago

Where do you get those small little plastic bags, that you use?
Castleknight 10 months ago
@Castleknight I got them at an Arts and Craft store. I believe they were in the beads section. They are 2"x3" and were fairly cheap (300 for < $3).

@TheUrbanPrepper Thanks for the info

Well thought out kit for urban edc.

However looking at everyone else's videos, yours seems to be the most useful as I don't intend on waking up lost in the Amazon anytime soon. I don't know what all of these McGuyvers are thinking...
KingDavidANC 11 months ago
See, for me, I'd much prefer having things like a pen, a light, and a multitool on a keychain, because it's stuff I'm gonna want to use on a second's notice, instead of fiddling with a bunch of crap in a tin, whereas things like medicine, bandages, and water purification tablets would be better suited for the tin, because you're probably going to be willing to spend a bit more time to get to them.
KingDavidANC 11 months ago

Thanks for sharing this my friend!
intenseangler 11 months ago
@intenseangler LOL! Those 3 Altoids saved me last night at a club. I had just eaten a sandwich and ran into a business associate. I didn't want to have stank breath, and luckily I had those mints on me. Phew! :)

Paper clips and small elastics.

LOL I never thought that if we were to have an emergency and need food we could go to the Aquarium.

carry a piece of aluminim foil to act as a signal mirror or be able to shape it as a boiling cup. be very careful on the folds. as thin as it is it will fit.
AurelioLeo 11 months ago
Great Urban perspective. This creates a whole new arena for diverse kits to be developed. One thing I did with my USB drive is put a host of free ware things like Open Office, virus scanners, my bookmarks/favorites, and a file with all logins and passwords- you may even want to add files or books on survival in general. Maybe even take screen shots of maps of your local area and save them. If the Internet is down but you have power and need to find direction or navigate then that works out.

The peanut lighter is a good choice because it's got a o-ring the petrol won't evaporate
lilrambo97 1 year ago
Add a small button compass. You could find yourself in an unfamiliar part of town and not be familiar with any of the streets. At night or on an overcast day you wont have the sun to help with direction. Four items I always carry in a very small nylon pouch are a peanut lighter, whistle, flashlight and compass.
buggyboy60 1 year ago
@buggyboy60 Good idea. Any recommendations on mini compass brands? Most of the really small ones I've purchased are cheap and eventually become ineffective.

I'd love to know how that can opener works, lol.

Throw in two alcohol wipes. Antiseptic is important and sometimes you just need to clean up! Also a least 6 inches of duct tape (and maybe more if it fits).
mrmonkeyman50 1 year ago
@mrmonkeyman50 I'll see if I can squeeze it in. I do have some alcohol wipes in my EDC bag which is always nearby. I'll try to find a mini duct tape wrapping design (a 1/2" slice of a credit card?).
