In the summer of 1976, Pete Talbot was asked by film producers David Cobham and Bill Travers to hand raise a baby otter called Spade. Over nearly two years together, they encountered a host of animals and fascinating animal people whilst Filming Tarka the Otter. Peter's fantastic experience is uniquely traced, for the first time ever, in his humorous and compelling book. Tarka and me. You can find it on Amazon Kindle.
I was about seven when I saw this movie. They advertise it as a cute movie with an otter, and it is until Mij gets smashed with a shovel... Yeah that went over well with me when I was a kid.
i remember this movie playing on tv one time when i was a kid...i still remember a bit of it! some city slicker gets an otter, moves to the country side, tries to find food for the otter...tries eels and shark? i forget the rest, but then is killed at the end right?
The Otter 'Mijbil' was brought back from Iraq by Maxwell, not from a pet shop in london, but was killed by a workman and replaced with 'Edal' who bacame his companion
As all film take offs, never true to the books or real life, but its a good film and i recon due a remake, watched the film again last week. I used to live on Skye, wish i still did. Check out some of these other Gavin Maxwell books
Harpoon at a venture, God Protect Me from My Friends, A Reed Shaken by the Wind, The Ten Pains of Death, The Otters Tale, The Rocks Remain, The House of Elrig, Lords of the Atlas, Raven Seek Thy Brother
But you should avoid this film. It's a trashy, sentimental travesty of the book, which is a really great piece of writing and deserved a proper adaptation. Read it, and then tell me this is a good film.
I have the book, buy have unfortunately only read a very small part of it. I agree it doesnt follow the book completely. But why not seperate the book from the film. How does the film seem then? Comparing films to the books they come from is usualy a way or ruining a film. Most film adaptations are way off from the original story. So why not enjoy the book as the book and enjoy the film a the film, seperately. If you had never read the book would you enjoy the film as it is?
The film has the same name as the book and this may lead people to think that Gavin Maxwell was like the hero of the film. The film trivializes the gravitas of the main character and turns him into a jolly lightweight. Read the whole book and then the true sequel (Raven Seek Thy Brother). A more realistic story (less Walt Disney) should have been filmed. 'Gavin Maxwell, a Life' by Douglas Botting gives insights into the troubled, yet inspirational character of the author and poet Gavin Maxwell.
Every so often there's a British movie that you may have overlooked, and it nearly takes your breath away. This is one of them, and it's a lovely movie. They just don't make them like this anymore!
I agree. This is a great film that I first watched as a kid but still love now. I have the full film on my channel if you would like to watch it again, pretty good quality too actualy.
summerspiano i don't think mij had babies. at least not in my memory. but i do love this movie. this one and the secret of roan innish! and war of the buttons. but it doesn't have any animals.
I have just finished reading the book again (last read in 1968!). Fantastic read, fekt kike I was in Scotland with the otters. Nice trailer, thanks for posting.
Where is that cottage he stays in? Is it still in existence? Perfect shot of it at 0:44. I'd love to go there - looks beautiful. What a fantastic film it is too.
We have this large bulk of old books imported from U.S. They are compilation of classics by Reader's Digest. Most of us at school don't read them. But one day, I was really angry at my classmate. And we were asked to write a report on a short story which we have found from the library. I chose this one old book of classical compilations because no one bothered to scan over the collection. From the book, I saw the story. I read over it and was in loved with the beautiful

Dionne Warwick's sister Dee Dee Warwick recorded a version of the theme song to this film, also called "Ring of bright water".

it will not be as good as Val's as he is of the Celts.
