  • I guess this is where Murdoch and the Gorillaz found there island..

  • remember in Lost... when the island kept moving?

  • living the dream

  • What a BAMF

  • This is true recycling.

  • is it still floating now in 2012?

  • can i live with you (and bring my laptop)

  • WOW!!!! I'd like to rent a hotel on that island for a few months.

  • The official Twitter video of the day. Courtesy of @ofthedayy

  • I wanna go freakin McGyver and build myself a self sustainable island and name it my own country.

  • they have this already.... its the size of texas and it was man made... its called the great pacific garbage patch.

  • dang coool {":

  • Left his family for this???

    .

Fuckin loser. I'll smash his island to bits and burn it down if I ever see it. Then he'll go back to his family.

  • Drift around the world on that?

    .

    Not happening buddy.

  • Why doesn't the thing float away?

  • If I wasn't already married, I'd marry this guy! :) Good for him, great work. I wish he would have used some of the Garbage Patch bottles. Still---AWESOME!

  • This guy is gonna start a new trend, and I'm NOT talking about that effing murse he's wearing either...

  • He better just keep it right tere in Mexico the ocean would rip that to shreads.

  • i wish i was him :(

  • So cool, i wish him luck in future plans :)

  • this is for those who are sick of their governments and want to found a place of true freedom

  • im going to create a floating, levitating garden next-proof? keywords levitating plant ,youtube

  • This guy hates paying taxes that much huh?

  • Sheesh this reminds me slightly of Jaime mantzel (he has a YouTube) but still...wow.

  • 4 people tried to make an island out of 1 coke bottle and sank

  • Mexicans claimed the island? the bastards!

  • Why would a self sufficiant man want to prottect New Orlean's?

  • ''his goal is to one day float out to sea and eventually drift around the world on the island he build with his own two hands'' i clearly have no words for that! he build his own little land, unbelievable

  • wonder what he's up to now?

  • @21centuryg actually have had the privilege to sit down and talk with this man the last 3 days! his island was destroyed but he has since rebuilt and it is in isla mujeres mexico! spectacular!

  • Man this was amazing back in 2002 when I first saw this and this still is amazing!

  • I wish there was some simpler way to do this. It's such a good use for bottles, and it's also FUCKING AWESOME

  • If some more (well, be honest..) kind of contreversial people john him, he could have like 5 tennis-coat-size island with 4 people living on it, or a fecking 20 man village town on it, in 20 years. I like his idea though x) but not enough to give up my family and home for it

  • maddest fucking dude.

  • 2 and a half years? I would take my entire life rofl

  • so, to make this island, he left his job...and his family?!?

  • Very environmentally friendly, asshole

  • @nickyboy22071989 How is he not being environmentally friendly?

  • @nickyboy22071989 its environmentally friendly actually. he saved 250000 plastic bottles from burning and worsening the atmosphere

  • He's built 2 islands, the first one was destroyed in 2005, not sure when this was recorded. The most recent was built in 2008. I wonder where all that plastic went from the first one?

  • i so want to live my life like this!.....runaway from the everyday stress, pain and boredom!

  • If he ever makes a floating country I would so live on it!!!!

  • @XxChRiSgOnNaPwNyAxX The point is everyone can do it, he just thought of doing so because it gave him advantages in daily life. I would personally not waste my money and time on something like this.

  • Entrepreneur Ben Way is undertaking an amazing project called Arc Island, a man made island capable of travelling the world which will hopefully grow to become a new civilization.

Be part of it! Go to kickstarter and donate. Yeah, it may seem ridiculous now but what if it does become something big? Then you can brag that you were one of the first investors.

  • omg thats amazing

  • wow!!!!!!!11 this could be the solutions to the biggest problems in plastics in the world especially here in the Philippines

  • put 200 of these islands in the pacific and make your own country

  • That is paradise.

  • How badarss is this i wanta island too

  • won't the plastic bottles eventually deteriorate, because they are exposed to the sea water? I'm not sure, if they can sustain, that kind of usage. The Plastiki, boat by David Rothchild, his bottles are pressurized with co2, I think.

  • that food is going ot be poisonous

  • OMG! i want to be there too!!! ahehehehe.

  • Plastic Beach.

  • Where's the bathroom? Bano (banyo?)... as in waste???

  • Nce island, but if he goes anywhere near open sea that thing will get ripped apart.

  • I will start to collect bottles from now on. damn, floating around mexico, growing marijuana on your own floating island, never have to work.. shit I was one of those now!!

  • Drift out to sea? Okay that's a little too far.

  • wow thats awesome!!! that would be the coolest way for me to go from Japan to America

  • Imagine the crazy amount of pussy he must get.

"Well, yeah, I have my own island. I made it myself. Wanna come see my puppy?"

  • GOOD WORK MATE!

  • it is amazing...but i wish plastic bottles and anything plastic for that matter will soon become a thing of the past.

  • djwatts1969@yahoo.com; d1971LA@aol.com

  • Amazing!

  • the ocean? this is cool, but one wave and his years of work would be destroyed

  • @mafiaslicka it was destroyed in 2005 with hurricane emily, but the strong base of wood and mangrove roots kept the island in one piece but washed it ashore and he rebuilt it by 2007 so its back again! :D

  • @mafiaslicka the island have survive 2 hurracans allready

  • Amaaaazing!!!!

  • wooow!

  • Richie- Great way to reuse plastic bottles. WOW you've even weathered the tropical weather and hurricanes. Thanks for your inspiration. Keep after your dream. ionized water guide.com

  • i just wonder if the plywood is holding all the weight over a long period of time cuz once plywood comes in contact with water it changes ... but maybe the roots of the plants will make the whole construction real strong

  • Now that's awesome :D

  • This dude is kool...

    -G

  • this guy is amazing! it's incredible what you can do when you're determined to make your dreams come true.

  • very EARTHY. It'll help in recycling plastics since plastics do not biodegrade. :))

  • i know him. that island got wrecked a while ago, and he now has a new one, in the same area. iv visited it, and its realy cool

  • @TheShanne123 how bout the animals did they survive and how did it get wrecked?

  • all we need about 600 we can make a new us if we wanted to are own rule and laws and cops

  • that is so frigging awesome and to think hundreds of bottles get put in the bin every year

  • one good storm

    one dead hippy

  • @ANCESTERSMEMORIES dude, did you watch the video? it has already withstood two major storms/ hurricanes.

  • This guy is a fucking genius.

  • @ch0colatemilk Living his dream could easily kill him and his animals, if he took that thing away from his protected lagoon... Any real storm would tear apart a tennis court sized float like this.

Even five foot wind chop would send his house into the drink.

I hope he never goes out there.

It's cool, as his protected houseboat, though.

    I DO like it.

  • Anyone want to do this in chicago???

  • Sick!

  • This dude needs to roll over to floatopia.

  • I'd do it if I had a hot girl to live with me

  • thats a good idea, we should make more. Now we can make a use for garbage.

  • I almost can't believe this. I'm still in shock.

    :O

  • I wonder if he has to ever replace the bottles, eh? o.O

  • My uncle is close friends with this mqn. He helped a bit making the island. If only I could see this place for myself...

  • I nominate this man for badass of the year.

  • i want to help. cause if enogh pepole get together and build. then his dream could become reality.

  • It was destroyed by the hurricane emily in 2005. But he made a new one somewhere in mexico...

  • bamf

  • Ha this is my mates uncle, what a hero.

And the name is pronounced So-Va.......not So-Wa

  • This man is either crazy, stupid, brave, or in a desperate need of a vacation. In any case he's amazing. lol

  • well thats recycling

  • Imagine if these islands were created and put in the gulf as a 'protective' reef to protect Louisiana ......from the damage of hurricanes!

Riche's island survived TWO hurricanes! This could be the answer to New Orlean's prayers!

  • Every man's dream...run away, run away!!

  • take your bottles and bottle up all that oil

  • This man is a genius.

He took a bunch of crap, and used it to create something truly amazing.

  • love his courage.. there are definitely a lot of determination and dreams floating on that island...

    i support this guy.. =D

  • SO MUCH WIN

  • @andylau1102 yes...if by eventually you mean millions of years

  • This is VERY cool! I think everyone should support his guy and give him all the empty bottles, so he can work on his "island". Eventually it would be so big and strong that no hurricane or big waves could hurt it. You could make it into a tropical paradise, plant everything you want to eat there and just enjoy :)

  • Those bottles are still degrading into the sea....and leaving his family behind. I hope that doesn't mean wife and/or children.

  • Cracked.

  • @BrianJLeong same

  • Its not an island. Its a RAFT. Still its very cool :)

  • Very cool, but he is insane if he thinks that thing would survive a trip around the world.

  • Smoke weed every day.

  • Hippie ftw XD

  • i hope he suceeds

  • what is name of the show from wich is this insert?

  • @acaglazgov most likely "Ripley's Believe It or Not"

  • 10nx :)

  • coolest video on youtube

  • I LIKE HIS OUT TO SEA IDEA

  • he must have been high

  • as soon as he gets to the ocean its gonna be like that ship scene in 'A PERFECT STORM'.... but i love his creativty

  • wtf!!! thats soooo cool!!!!! Really inspiring. Just goes to show how thoughts can create your reality. Determination and trust in the process of the universe and you can do anything.

    Amazing!

  • i was going to make a boat lke that

  • great!

  • i just saw this island today! Its crazy! Funny!

  • Comment removed

  • nothing is impossible XD

  • OMFG!!!! He is my hero, I'm going to do this Seth7123 I'm gonna join you on the collection of bottles, people we should make a club if you"re interested. :D

  • my naiber knows that guy

she lived next door to him once!

  • Comment removed

  • that kinda cool

  • its not just cool, its freggin awesome

  • yea haha it's kinda funny the video I didn't comment freakin awesome someone else does! :)

  • @Franket the way you spelled freaking disturbs me.

  • my friends and i are going to do this, we are just now beginning to collect the bottles, we are planning to take all the bottles southward to the gulf of mexico, constructing it, and floating away. I am truely excited. so far we have narly 100 bottles, and we just started on monday (today is friday).

    this will be amazing.

it wont be fully ready/constructed for about 3 and a half years, but be ready,we're planning on it being the size of a football field of 2. =]

  • ...Building plans now.

  • Comment removed

  • totally awesome

  • imagine if 100 people got together and all made equal size sialands and combines them... that be awesome.

  • that indeed would be awesome to link islands together to make one big floating country... but i have a feeling that some bodies government would get involved and try to tax it or govern it and just ruin the whole thing.

  • @MartellArts that would be amazing, if you read my comment above, we are planning on doing something similar to this amazingly intelligent man.

  • @MartellArts was just thinking the same.... lets do it! O_O

  • @Danno1850 The world needs to take care of its garbage in a more effective way. They should make floating islands with the bottles and use the nukes we have created to propel trash into the sun. It wouldnt be hard and it be saving the planet so much suffering.

  • @MartellArts Did you watch the Futurama Episode too :P

  • @MartellArts So all of that highly advanced heat treated polymer that was painstakingly forged from the earth gets launched into the sun?

I have a better idea. Lets melt down the plastic trash and re-use it.

  • @MartellArts I'm in!

  • @MartellArts ...why not? Get to it man, I bet you a lot of people looking to escape todays society would love to do that.

  • i now know what i want to do with my life :D

  • wykop kurwa !

  • YEAh superman

  • I was there 2 weeks ago on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Pretty awesome. He is trying to make it ocean worthy now. His first island was destroyed by a hurricane, now he's living on his second one and is planning a third.

  • Fuck thats awesome.

But sailing it out into the ocean would fail.

    Big waves etc.

  • No matter how big he makes it, it'll get DESTROYED in the ocean. Not a good idea, I hope he doesn't do it.

  • Does he replaces these bottles? they may just break down in awhile

  • plastic bottles can last thousands of years in a trash pile and that is why plastic bottles should all be recycled.

  • i wanna make one.

  • Absolutely awesome what this guy did here it was ashame when it was destroyed by a hurricane after it survive thoughs other, but I hear he been making another one.

  • what happens when in time all those bottles degrade? island sinks ? :/

  • they do not degrade, as long as there is no sun present.

  • i hope he makes it with his new island! I would love to see lots of copy cat islands as well! That would be sweet to have lots of little floating islands out in the oceans....

  • with a lil hlep he could make that real big like a foot ball field

  • did it work for you? I think I'm going to try as well

  • this is my dream

  • i was just on his island..

that island got destroyed by a hurricane and in 2 years he created a new island, he is really nice.. and he doesn't have those animal except the dog anymore but he does have a new cat. but the island is extremely interesting

  • how did you get to be on his island. do you know him personally?

  • my parents had met him before and then i met him in a restaurant and we asked to see his island. in isla mujeres, mexico

  • those bottles are non-bio degradable, but they will break down eventually... i was thinkin of foam or something.. lol

  • cool..

  • WTF THE MEXICAN government claimed his island HAHAH... icant wait till those bastards show up with aks and rpgs....paradise lost
