I know. It's kind of a shame to see that the only "tribute" he's been given in recent years is the Family Guy skit (sheesh, and I thought the show couldn't get any worse...).
i love rooney it broke my heart to see him cry on the stand talking about the elder abuse he recently has suffered for years. a legend like him should be treated with only respect
i have been a fan of Mickey Rooney for so long. and is it weird that i am only 14.My favorite was his serise Andy Hardy, i also particularly loved his role in "Boys Town" with Spencer Tracey i love to watch these oldies. all these new movies they make now are just stupid.
if Rooney had been just a little taller you can just imagine all the roles he could have nabbed.........back then leading men were at least average height.......with only a few exceptions....like bogey and Alan Ladd
And to think the Mickster is STILL going strong in his 80's! At one time he was the biggest star in Hollywood. And even though he's been married MANY times, I seriously doubt that rumor about the Los Angeles County Marriage Bureau naming a revolving door after him. THANKS for posting this delightful "blast from the past"! :)
You should check and see if this is part of a "lost" silent film. Many silents thought to have been gone forever have been found this way.The films of the late 1920's are some of the rarest.
And compared to some of the others (like Olivia DeHaviland and Joan Fontaine, sisters who are still very much alive and who I wish would make peace (and maybe they will, or have), Mickey Rooney is still going strong.
I think he knows that he's lucky to still be performing. And God bless him. He's not just a performer, but also one of the best film actors you will ever see.
He's a rare gift. Notwithstanding all of the wives. And the lawyers.
But Mickey isn't the androgenous one with curls. He's the kid with the missing front tooth. Or teeth, depending on how much hooch you've had. The leader of the "gang." And the stogie.
Thankfully, his teeth got fixed (or fixed themselves) before he kissed Judy Garland.
Re other kid stars still around from the Silent Era: I believe only 2 prominent members from the Our Gang silents are still alive: Mildred Kornman & Jean Darling.
Jean was the sassy girl with blond curls, she did both silent & talkie OG films.
Mildred was the younger sister of Mary Kornman, the lead lady in the earliest OG silents; Mildred always got the "baby sister" roles back then, she appears with Mary together in "The Fourth Alarm" seen here on youtube.
It does look a lot like the Our Gang series. I heard my dad talk about Mickey McGuire, but never seen any of the movies till now. That was great, thanx for the post.
Occasioinally you'll see a silent movie on the Turner Movie Classics network, usually early in the morning. I have a few on vcr myself like The Sheik of Araby and Tillie's Fractured Romance. I was also lucky enough to find the Phantom Of The Opera on dvd for $1.00
The majority of these films probably ended up in The Libary of Congress.
Unforunately that's not the case. An estimated 50% of all films made before 1950 are considered lost and among silent films that number rises to 80-90%.
There's even plenty of television programming that has been lost over the years either because it was never recorded, was thrown away, was recorded over or because it was allowed to deteriorate.
The Mickey McGuire short film series was produced from 1927-1934. There were 62 two reel films made altogether. The first 24 were silent films and the rest were talkies. The films were produced by Larry Darmour and based on characters in the Toonerville Trolley comic strip by Fontaine Fox.
These were the most successful kid comedies competing against Hal Roach's Our Gang (Little Rascals) kid comedies.
Mickey Rooney usually played McGuire but Marvin Stephens also played McGuire in a few.
Where did you find the silent films of Mickey McGuire? I own the original 16mm films done when sound first came into being. Also star Billy Barty. We are trying to find the other names of the kids. We weren't sure they existed.
I don't think many people appreciate the longevity of Mickey's career. He appeared in silent movies -- he may well be one of the last surviving silent film actor -- and less than a year ago he was in Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller. Amazing!
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my latest one on 1930's movie stars: Mickey Rooney, Johnny Davis, Mickey Rooney, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford...

As of Sept. 26, 2010, Rooney is the only living person who appeared in silent films.

My last comment tonight is that I'm glad there were no cell phones in the 1920's.
Gangster murders would never have worked out without dial phones. Or no phones at all.

Quite. He was born in 1920 and hasn't stopped yet.
After wives counting into perhaps the double digits (starting with Ava Gardner), how could he possibly stop?

I think that I saw Weezer and Farina in the film too.
This must have been produced by Hal Roach's studio, he was prominent in the filming of the kids films. Nice trip down memory lane, thanks.
