Thanks for this. I had to add this cut to Tenor Madness even though it is by Mccoy. It is my all time favorite Joe Henderson solo. The cut is killer and Joe is just smokin' from beginning to end. Incredible stuff!!
McCoy is swinging and doing an advanced harmonic thing here. I reaaly love Elvin Jones here too. Elvin swings hard without over powering. He remains in control of the drums.Joe Henderson is respectful of Trane and even tries to imitate John. This is a fine recording of Passion Dance.
Have had this in my car's CD player some 90% of the time over the past 5 years at least! LOVE 4ths (obviously!) and Tyner's fearless aggression that yet is absolutely not *over*powering or vain. God, I love his harmonic depth and complete and utter swing! My first exposure to McCoy was via Coltrane's take on My Favorite Things (the 13 minutes and change rendition on a "best of" album), and he's been my favorite ever since (despite having fallen big for Brubeck, Ibrahim, Terrasson, etc since).
that's what swing is supposed to sound like people/ I've never heard a groove like that one. It's relaxed but solid as a rock, it's free and open. Amazing! McCoy is the greatest.
I love the way McCoy builds his solos, layer upon layer, like building a mansion, the foundation is layed and its rock solid, everything goes up from there... layer by layer. He really perfected that approach over the years playing with his mentor and friend, John Coltrane. I once asked where he gained his depth of musical insight and he simply said""JCU" (John Coltrane University) Enough said!

I had the pleasure of seeing McCoy Tyner several times at Sweet Basil (w/ Ron Carter) and the Blue Note in NY, and in 1999 at Yoshi's in Oakland with Joe Lovano and Bobby Hutcherson. It just doesn't get ANY better. I pray that his fragile health hulds up, and that we continue to hear him for years to come.
Ok..I love this guy already...his playing style made me smile as I thought of Fats Waller and Oscar Petterson..what a stage show that wouldve been huh...Thanks for posting this cut...Long Live LIVE Jazz
Mcoy to the stage Jon put Passion Dance too lyric "they sang spining around like a top I don't belive they will ever stop{repeat} that passion that passion dance that passion that passion dance it was pretty cool I don't remember the complete lyric ,this one of my favorite Mcoy Tyner tunes!
During this period in the 60's Mccoy recorded a lot with Joe Henderson. He was also on on Joe's albums Inner Urge, the In And Out.After playing with Coltrane Mccoy tended too play with high energy tenor men John Gilmore,Wayne Shorter among others.quick note in the early 70's I saw Mccoy at U.C. Berkeley Jazz Fest. The great singer song writer Jon Hendricks was m.c. at the fest announcing
so much energy!!!

I love the atonal runs of his scale, one of the greatest jazz pianists with a solid musical personality. God bless you Mr. Tyner.

Great tune!! I love how Tyner bangs the low end of the piano keys as he is comping over the melody.
mayurasana 2 years ago 3
@mayurasana bet he stole this from Horace Silver :D
SlikkTim 1 year ago
@SlikkTim you might be right. i think ahmad jamal was also doing that technique before tyner.
