I am wanting to learn how to play a harmonica but I don't know what key the one I'm using it is in. It is a Lark M-1202 made in Shanghai China. That's all I know about it. Google didn't help me at all. Could someone tell me what key it is in?
@inverseactuality It is likely in the key of "C".. But the best thing to do would be to try to play along with a video you know is in the key of C. Check out my 12 bar blues video which is in that key and play along, if the notes sound similar, it is that key. If not, leave a comment there and we can try to hone in on it.
Good to see it up here ..Nice... try less coffee and slow down........... also simple notes with feeling works better than trying to get fancy or 'jazing' it up. Less is sometimes more and empty spaces can have more effect and be 'louder' than a note or chords. Remember old Taoist shpeel about the empty space in the middle of a wheel is the thing that really makes it useful ..... anyone got Lady GaGa's phone number :-)
@myonefingerable hahaha... sorry man.. its like a different language when you're first starting out.. feel to ask any questions in the harp group i have linked from my homepage
@shaunawoodz Awesome mang! Glad to help out.. plz check out the website if you get a moment!! Love making the music, would love to hear what you thought! Cheers! -mike
happens to the best of us. Hey, There is this really cool song i've been tryin to pick up. ever heard of Dropkick Murphys - shippn off to boston? there bagpipes im sure, but it would sound Great on the harp. otta check it out.
I have an antique chromatic harp from the 1930s, and it just doesn't sound like you when I play this. :-( Why are all the good harmonica songs diatonic?
Thanks for the lessons they are great. Can you post a harmonica lesson for the whistle or pipe part of "Gallway Girl" by Steve Earle in the key of E....???
thanks for the comment... i try to stay away from bob dylan because he uses straight harp and a ton of notes... harder to tab out or do justice to... easier to pick up by ear.. just use the harp that is in the same key as the song... so G harp for G song, opposed to cross harp which is C harp for G song... any other q's on that, post them in the group (in the about the video section)... cheers!
Hey.. just posted another comment on this (above).. i am staying away from dylan stuff for now.. but yes you are right about cross harp... check out the video entitled Cross Harp v. Straight harp for more info, or join the harp group (about the video) and post other questions in there... Cheers!
Hi.. I don't think I want to open Bob's can of worms... He uses straight harp and plays melodies and many notes... it would be really confusing i think to try and go through it because there are soo many notes, not to mention tons of time to tab... but it is pretty straight forward, so I would suggest just getting the harp out and start playing along... it's pretty clear after listening and watching when he is blowing (most of the time) and when he has those quick inhale notes...
Sure thing man... Might I suggest an A harp before the E harp though... The A is much more versatile... (though I suppose it all does depend really on what you wanna do)

Thanks for explaining the difference between cross and straight harp. I have using the straight harp to accompany my guitar playing. It seems easier.
jamlav01 2 years ago
Yea.. straight is easier for sure... but I think most harp players like cross better cuz of the low stuff and the bending notes
pazzmanmusic 2 years ago
What is the difference between a Cross Harp and a standard diatonic?
MrJeppsSe 2 years ago
Cross harp is just a way to play it.. like 1st position, vs 3rd position, straight vs cross... check out my video on that topic for more info

A is my favorite key, even though a lot of people don't like A. The only reason I said E is that Mr. Tambourine Man is played in E\G.
