  • you got to remember, its a auto mustang! has bad launches cuz the stall on the torque convertor is only about 1700 rpm, way too low. put a 2500 or 3000 stall in there, which is near max torque, and lose .5-1.0 sec off the 1/4 mile. theres also more power lost through that auto trans, 15% est manual, 20% auto. but if you want to make a strip only car, auto is the best.

  • Stop aruguing about foxbodys. Their is not alot they can beat stock or even with a mild H/C/I setup. Foxbodys look and sound great but have no power to back it up. The best thing you can do to a fox is look in the aftermarket for a longblock swap or if you want to keep it Ford a nice 351w should give it some bite. 220hp (or however much, still sucks) doesn't cut it. A honda H22 makes that stock as well (I'm not a Honda boy, just know about honads). Great chassis, poor powerplant.

  • Wrong...you guys need to learn your freaking mustang history on here. The 85 GT had 210 hp, the 86 GT had 200 hp and actually were the quickest foxbody 5.0 made next to the 93 cobra's. the 87-92 GT/LX 5.0 put down 225hp while the 93 GT's put down 205. The 87 GT's were the best for mods. But in stock trim straight from the factory the 86 GT's were known to have run mid to low 14's...That's incredible for a car in the mid 80's....all for around 8-10k brand new.

  • @jobinblow Automatic 5.0 mustangs only run 14.7's in the 1/4 mile..they run like shit..If you get a 5.0, you need a 5 speed, there a whole nother world next to the automatic..the 5 speeds destroy auto 5.0's..My stock 2011 hemi ram 4x4 quad cab runs 14.58's in the 1/4 mile..I beat my buddys mint condition garage kept 5.0 AOD mustang all day long..Now, the 5 speed on the other hand..he rapes my truck..

  • from 87-93 ALL 5.0's were 220hp/300ft lb torque with the exception of the 93 cobra's being what he said "235hp" and with 320ft lb torque.

  • Race grade? HUH? How about running some engine cleaner through the system and giving it new rings and bearings and new plugs and other typical tune up items. Heads and cam and 3.73's

  • @cskater18 The speed has traction control, and i own a 88 5.0, the stock suspension is extremely unpredictable and loves to spin. you put a good set of traction bars on there and some good street tires and that 5.0 would smoke that speed3 up to about 110 or so.

  • @cskater18 The 4.6 launch better. when ford came out with the fox body, they tried a new suspension set up. it used a "quadshock" to stabilize the rear end under load. this was great for ride quality, problem is, they let the rear end move too much. that along with soft rubber bushings allows WAY too much movement. it makes the rear end spin ruthlessly and tend to want to wash out in hard cornering.

  • @cskater18 5.0 is old bud... ye its a quick car but remember this stang is most likly only pumping out 250+/- Hp

    not to mention its got tall gears from the factory. both in the tranny and the Diff, and a full frame design (heavy)

    take that mustang, run some race Grade cleaner through that tired engine, replace all sparkplugs, wires, injectors, most lickly replace some of the gasket seals cuz their probably toast. and put 3:73 Diff Gears and that mustang would perform wayyyyy better.

  • Give the mazdaspeed its due!.Its one of (if not) the fastest FWD cars out there. I have a mazda 3 S sport (no turbo) and besides the lack of power it handles really nice! Now, where can I find a crashes mazdaspeed drive train? LOL

  • @arcosfidel A 5.0 with bolt ons, on street tires, is a mid 13 sec car at best. The speed 3, is a ~14 sec car bone stock and some have managed to pull 13.8s stock.

    So for it to be that close, he probably didnt suck.

    Honestly neither car is what anyone should consider fast.

  • I've had my 08 MS3 since it first hit the showroom floor and I've dusted every stock mustang I ran with since. I haven't run a well modded one, but a couple bolt on's I have beat. (intake/exhaust) They are defiantly faster post 1/4 in many cases, but my speed just appears to have more low end umph than stock or lightly modded mustang's I've run so far. I only have CAI.

  • @SGTRandyB Every stock or lightly modified MS3 i've seen at the local strip has trapped 96 mph. I have a 5.0 notch with a very mild cam, stock iron Explorer heads, Edelbrock intake and short tube headers- very mild setup- and I trap 106. That's 10 mph more.... I paid $800 for my car and another $1500 for everything else that's been done to it. How much does an MS3 cost? Yea no thanks waste of money.

  • @faststang02 yeah 260 to the wheels stock, I'm running about 400hp right now, bit I agree the new 5.0 is sick, I miss all my old mustangs and I will eventually get a new cobra. But as far as traction I have a lot of wheel hop and torque steer and it's quite annoying lol

  • @killbillet420 my gfs ex tried to start shit by sending me a vid of a ms3 outrunning a old 5.0 cuz ive got a new one. i whooped his bitch ass. that new 5.0 engine is nothing to mess around with its got some nasty power and with just a few bolt ons it runs less that 10s on a 1/4. i mean stock for stock the 2011 5.0 makes 413hp roughly and a stock ms3 is what? 260-270? hahaha. traction would go to the ms3 cuz fwd but all 5.0 from there.

  • @faststang02 lol yeah the new ones are def nothing to mess with, the mazda does put out 260 to the wheels on a dyno, more to the motor but you know how all that works, the last time i dynoed my car was in oklahoma and it was 400 i live in colorado so with the elevation in prob at 350. but like I said hopefully by the end of the summer ill have all my parts put me a little over 400 idk if i want to go more but it would be nice haha

In retrospect, though, I've owned a couple fox's and my Dakota 2wd with the lightly modded 5.2 Magnum it has would have blown the doors off my fox chassis...

  • Also forgetting since this was a down hill the 4cyl turbo is at an advantage, try the same race uphill and you'll see the the fox pull ahead and most likely even on a flat road with better tires on fox. Looks like a cold day and worn tires.

  • @stevezane A regular mazda3 would not beat a 5.0l fox body nor would it hang that close to a stage2 str4. I know because i had a regular mz3. Thing was slow as hell! That was the 1st gen speed3, that's why it didnt have a scoop. They're 280ftlbs in torque in a fwd car, it's going to have trouble getting off the line. Not to mention the ecu limites the psi and takes the hp down to 230 for 1st and 2nd gear...

  • @stevezane actually the only way for the mazda to make more power than the mustang is to force more fuel/air into it. which is what the turbo is for. so it might get better mpg, but not when its using the turbo.

They recorded numerous and I mean numerous amount of times before it is put down. Am I saying car and driver doesn't? No, but it's already been proven real life drivers get better posted numbers. Also, 1995 GT weighs 3281lbs.

  • @Texarmageddon The most important thing is that if you went to a race and you were restricted from extreme redesigns the mustang is going to take it. As fast as this car is on numbers, the most important number is weight distribution and the MS3 lacks that in a huge manner. I rather take the car that weighs 40lbs heavier with a much better weight distribution and improve it. NOt to mention high-power Fwd is going to be an issue.

  • @Texarmageddon the MS3 has a 42/48 weight distribution with more HP and more Torque than any 5.0 ever dreamt of, I fail to see where a ford escort with a V8 straped-on has a chance, the MS3 starts being magic in 3rd where it's not boost-limited :D

Yet, if we compare the 2010 model gt. It's same weight with 45 more hp and 45 lb of tq. If we take the 5.0 Mustangs which are LIGHTER than a MS3 and still has a better weight distribution. I still fail to see your logic. I mean jesus christ you want me to believe numbers that are worse than EDMUNDS?

Was the driver thoroughly used to both cars? The ms3 is going through turns 2.7m faster than a mustang gt MEANING you aren't going to fly by a mustang in a corner. Not to mention the huge braking distance of the MS3. You want numbers I'll give you numbers

  • @KittyKranker same $4000 in a fox mustang goes just as far in terms of hp - basically when it comes down to it, unless one is buying a corvette, shelby mustang, gt-r, or another car in that class, i just don't think that ANY new cars are really worth it - the 2011 mustang gt is the first one i've really salivated over in a long time, aside from the shelby's.

    there are plenty of mustangs out there road racing that are very competitive. they're known as drag cars but they're capable of a lot more

  • @KittyKranker $4000 will get you a 5.0 in decent condition, a set of good aluminum heads and matching cam and intake - another $11000 will buy you exhaust, a new fuel system, suspension, a trans, a new rear end, wide wheels, and some sticky tires. maybe even a fresh short block or a rebuild. throw that up against a $15,000 mazda 3 and see what you get :). the dollar-to-horsepower ratio will speak to the 5.0's validity.

  • @mgmuscari Wrong, sorry but so wrong. dollar-to-hp mazda has it way beat. I love my old fox body, don't get me wrong, and plenty of friends with built 5.0s and 4.6s, they don't touch my wife's ms3 on take off. Now you give me a 2 mile straight shot and maybe in top end i'll catch her but she'll probably be too far ahead already. I love driving her car on switchbacks, something no mustang could keep up on.

  • @Rickara3226 i don't see how a $22,725, 265hp (280 according to kittykranker) 3200lb mazdaspeed 3 begins to compare in dollar-to-hp ratio to a $4,000, 225hp 3200lb fox... the math doesn't work out. i'm not saying the mazda sucks - you misunderstand me. i'm saying that you can build up a fox for way less than it would cost to even buy a mazdaspeed 3 new from the factory. when i'm done with my build i'll be under $15k and way over 350hp, and it will handle just as well as that mazda.

  • @mgmuscari yea, u r right, dunno if i was just not adding it up and being partial, i can see it being able to gain more hp for cheaper but on handling on curves? that would take a hell of a suspension and being a rwd would be hard not to break loose in curves with more ponies. I am a bigger fan of the mustang, i promise,(except for the tail lights on the 2010) but i've seen alot of these little quick geared cars take on some of the greatest old school muscles.

  • @Rickara3226 Are you kidding? the aftermarket pricing is determined by the longevity of the product. The 5.0 has been in the game a lot longer than the MS3 engine even though it is a ford engine.

    I own a ms3 but I love mustangs, mostly 03-04 cobras but a fox has so much potential. I'd much rather have my ms3 as a daily driver but use a fox as just a toy

  • Not really... stock 5.0L mustangs are kinda slow... really. I've owned 6 mustangs 5x 5.0L... stock, they are high 14s cars.

    Yep! Once you start modifying them they are easy 12s cars. My other car is a DART 347 open track car (still legal) and runs 10s, but its an Amercian Iron setup - definitely NOT a drag car. Anyways good luck and take it easy
