I like how assholes that don't know a dammed thing about something can really fuck it up when they try to comment about things. 1) Pancho Villa was a Mexican Revolutionary Leader in a couple of different Mexican Revolutions, and he was killed in 1917 not a Bandit as the United States Government branded him, after the Columbus N.M. raid. 2) He was not a Robin Hood Bandit in the 1880s, 3) And he and his followers where big on killing catholic priests every chance that they got. (check it out)
I've lived on the Arizona-Mexico border for the past 20 years and my great grandfather was Border Patrol in south Texas. You can't keep the outlaws from crossing the border; my friends and I have done it plenty of times
@sevenfingers2001 Keep up the good work with keeping the dirtbags from coming north. Its so sad that we allow such bullshit to continue and then on top of it we make it hard for the ones who want to come here to assimilate and become American.
Hey dumbshit, don't you know we're all human beings and all evolved from bacteria that lived 4 billion years ago. That means that you're a mut as much as anyone and probably are the great great grandson of hitler, but just because luck makes you born one way or another doesn't make you dirt. To have the misfortune of being born poor in a third world country is not something one should be kicked and killed for. Those who risk their lives because they are so desperate should be welcomed.
@yofi01 I agree with you, but we have to foot the bill for what the illegals are getting away with. If you give to everyone and everything how is your own quality of life going to suffer? Natural selection is a part of life.
This song makes sense if you actually listen to it it's about and old western out law name poncho villa who stole money from the rich to give to the poor people of his country and the song says he met his match because he was killed by the police in the 1880s and I know all this because my great great grandpa ride with poncho

This was the first song I played at the bar my granddad took me to when I was a kid.We went and played every friday night he was alive, and this was the last song we ended up playing before he passed some years later.
Heard Hoyt Axton sing it in 1977 for the first time and always loved it. So surprised when Merle and Willie did it and it became such a hit for them! Enjoy it every time I hear it!
Wow...I haven't heard that song in at least 20 years (I'm 28 now) and I still find myself singing along like I heard it yesterday....Great song and great memories of my father.
why cant we just accept that its a good song and not worry about Pancho Villa? i mean this is great inspirational and classic music! why do we have to complicate it with retarded arguments like this?
According to legend, Pancho Villa did in fact have a friend whose name in spanish meant 'Lefty'. Unfortunately, it's more of a coincidence than anything since Villa was assassinated politically.
@Grummur Actually look up the song itself. It was coincidence when Van Zandt wrote the song, he states it in the interview that he had no intention of the song being about Pancho Villa. So therefor, its not about Pancho Villa, sorry man but the song writer his ownself stated so.
@Looter246 - Actually, in the interview he said that the song was an inspiration and that he had no idea who the people were, it was if Townes was simply a vehicle for channeling the song. He had no idea who it was about, but that he didn't rule out Pancho Villa as the source of his inspiration. In fact, Townes references that Pancho had a friend named Lefty in Spanish. Anyway you look at it, it is a great, evocative song.
Thanks for giving the real history of the song in the description. I had always heard it was about Pancho Villa, but knew historically that it didn't make any sense.
