So what causes a rip-current? The tide going out and passing through shallow gaps in underwater sand bars, causing a strong current in what appears to be a random location?
i just got back from the beach at sandestin. i got caught in a riptide but it was so shallow that the rip tide did no harm. it was a very scary feeling but since i wasnt deep enough i simply just walked back to shore against the current.
rip currents aren't anything in my opinion, every time i go to the beach (2 times a week) I get caught in one because thats where the waves are the best. If anything they help me just get far out for the bigger waves, but usually i get out as soon as I'm in one just swimming to the side/ parallel to the beach. rip people who were caught and drowned.
Yeah, they're only dangerous if you don;t know what to do. Lifeguards and surfers often do use the rip currents to get to victims/ further out quicker.
well once i was swimming and i got caught in one but i just swam straight didnt bother me i rarely swim though i have only swam twice in my life i am 13 i live in phoenix arizona and just sit out side all day and enjoy the heat its 110 most of the time my family goes too hawia lol cant spell it it but we go there alot once every week every time we do i just sit close too a lava flow my family won a lottery for 300 million so we each got 30 million so we are rich (month april not a name) :)
This is the problem with "sensational/news" presentation of rip current. It's a natural part of the wave dynamic, but stuff leave us very confused. It's big invisible and scary! Only lifeguards have expertise to recognize!! Everyone should go to a surfing website and learn what they say. They actually "catch riptides" to go out, and ride the waves back to shore. It's not something you fight. Waves break in, and current pulls back. Awareness not fear is what needs to be presented.
I grew up on the beach, but Long Island kept the open ocean from having many effects on the water. I went down to Florida and rented a boogie board and started going out. Well I got WAY out without knowing it, and I started getting really scared. The beach had to have been a mile and a half away, and it seemed like the more I tried to paddle in, the farther out I was going. I have no idea if I was in a rip tide or not. I made it back, with the grace of God, and will never repeat.
@jaruel37 Gonna have to call shannigans. someone doesn't die from a rip current because rip currents pull them out to sea, because rip currents do not pull people out to sea. They only pull you a short distance before they stop pulling at all
@1yo2many well, really a rip current will eventually just lose pretty much all of its power, so she most likely drowned of fatigue before the rescue could get to her- I don't think its possible for a rip tide to drag you out so far no one can see you.
@1yo2many No, that doesn't even make sense. People die from rip currents because they die from drowning because they exhaust themselves from trying to swim against the current.
how does someone who knows how to swim drown? It must be from just panicking. If you get exhausted, how hard it is to just float or tread water? You can tread water using only your hands. I can never understand why people put themselves in situations they aren't comfortable in. If your not a confident swimmer, stay out of deep water.
@perineum6 dude.....i know a hawaii lifeguard who almost died in the water....you obviously hav no common knowledge of the ocean what so ever if you think your safe if you know how to swim.....michael phelps can drown in an ocean if undertoes, rip currents, or waves r powerful enough
@EducationHelp123 dude....I know a hawaii lifeguard who has never almost drown...you obviously have no reading skills what so ever if you think I said anything about being safe swimming in the ocean. My point was that if you're not a confident swimmer, stay out of dangerous situations, like swimming in the ocean.
@perineum6 Dude, it doesn't just happen in deep water. it started at my ankles and I knew how to swim but its not from panicking. When I got swept out and could barely see beach and I was next to an island with huge rocks and the waves were crashing hard. Some people just pass out I found out, and some people dont know how to tread or get too tired and give up. You're a person who takes the ocean for granted.
@ToontownRocker123 Actually no, taking the ocean for granted could get you killed. I am an avid snorkeler and spend a lot of time in the ocean. I have been pushed around by the current many times, but if you keep your cool and stay calm, it's not a problem. Stay out of dangerous situations.
i think i got caught in one as a kid. it was a beach in hawaii that had a man-made wall and there was a little opening in the middle. i was swimming next to the opening and the water started sucking me out. i held onto a rock and remember some lady yelling "oh shit!" then she pulled me out of it. never got to thank her =)
I was just at the beach earlier till 6... and i was in the water when the water got rough and the waves were coming in small intervals.... I went toward the shore with one wave that broke behind me and then another wave came and the undercurrent sucked me under... this happened like 5 times, until I decided to get out of the water
@spire1997 God works in mysterious ways and He saved him so that's all that matters. Yes, He did create something that could be destructive but He also taught us how to get away from the situations like swimming parallel to shore when caught in a rip, it disgusts me when people make fun of any religion
I live in NC. Always been scared of riptides. :\ My parents always warned me about swimming too far out because a riptide could catch you and you'd just disappear.
Scary stuff. Makes me not want to swim in the ocean, not that I really like to anyways...pools for me, thanks.
i was swimming yesterday and got pulled so much out to shore we had to rely on god and my boggie board to survive...one of us used the uneversal signal to the guard but they were not paying attention but my dad was and i almost drowned if it wasnt for god and my boggie board cuz we had no life jackets... Popham Beach, ME
I took the full weight of a breaking wave, and ate the beach. I was probably up to my ears in solid sand. The weight on my back was tremendous. I never thought I'd witness something so painful in my life. I didn't think I'd come out a live.
Just goes to show you how powerful the ocean is, and shouldn't be taken lightly. I was feet away from the shore and was put through the agony of my life.
Yea I had a similiar experience. I had gotten pulled out around 60ft, I was thinking, I can do this, so I swam diagnally towards the beach but it was too swift and wide, I was actually getting pretty scared until some monster swells picked my ass up and basically threw me head over heels back in shallow water, felt like I tripped face first.
I got caught last week in one and thought it was all over.. It toook me over an hour to get back into shore and even the coast guard couldn't get out to me. I WILL NEVER LOOK at the OCEAN the same way..Lavallette Beach NJ
I got caught up in one yesterday and my sister came out for me. Then we both were in bad shape, someone came out to get us but i'm still really freaked out.. I wish I knew the guys who pulled me out because I really want to think him
pumping adrenalin gives at least 40 seconds or in most cases more than one minute of air in the lungs, it its like a backup if there are strong currents and many waves coming so stay calm and relaxed if you are in the middle of the rip, just float as much you can, and in the right moment when the rip is losing power swing across.
omg i got cuaght in one! At first i thought i was jumping the waves in pinsacola and then i could barely c the beach. i swam sideways and when i was close life guard come in and helped me.Though he was yellling at me! IM like dude i almost died cut me some slack! But then im like I AM ALIVE SO WHATEVER THANK GOD!!!!!
I don't agree about the visibility of rips. In some places relatively modest but still very dangerous rips may be almost impossible to see. Thus never assume that there isn't one because you can't see one.
Remember - "the smaller the bay, the larger the waves, the stronger the rip"
Excellent advice not to panic, but achieving that alone may not suffice. You can still die, calmly. Some of them won't spit you out in time. You will get too tired to keep getting your mouth out of the water and spray / take too many mouthfulls of water and / or get too cold.
PS You can't at all count on them to "spit you out" you are better advised to ask for help or if none available swim sideways hoping to get out. But in some places the only way back to shore (away from the rip) is where waves are breaking over rocks ...
the REALLY scary thing is, what happens if after you finally swim out of a rip current (and think yes! it's all over) but then end up in another one? or you swim parallel but the current is SO wide that it continues to pull you back? i would definitely panic, i'm terrible at remaining calm when it comes to danger. I would probably call out to God for help. :D
I always have had a fear of like being taken out into the open. Not so much thats i cant swim back its just that i wouldnt see anyone around to help me. Im also terrible at remaining calm.
my brother and i got stuck in one with no lifeguard on the beach.we just swam for or lifes and eventually we got out.and i looked back and my brtoher had a long way to go.but luckly he got out
gd vid.. these things are so dangerous i got caught in 1 once in like 5-7 foot surf luckily i got caught up in the boat lane rope so i managed to pull myself back in
Definitely do your research on riptides before going out into the water - when I first started surfing I got caught in one and it certainly wasn't the nicest of experiences.
ive been reading up on all this stuff im going to myrtle beach sc this friday so im trying to learn everything about rip currents and sharks so i think im all good id probably still be scared if i got stuck in one i knew someone who died in one trying to rescue her sons it was sad :(

1) If you can't swim, don't go in the water without a lifeguard nearby. If you're not a good swimmer then bring a board.
2) Spot them by looking for the water that is brown and foamy and/or where there are no waves.
3) Swim sideways and don't panic if you feel yourself getting pulled out.

in that case swim on the direction of the current. The more you are off the shore the best to get out of the current..
swimming parallel works wonders, because surfers are used to do it all the time on hollow waves and wipeouts.
