Does anyone know the actual science here? How long does that rope need to be if someone's gonna hang from it? Also, is it true that a 6ft drop (with the rope positioned under one of the ears) would instantly break the neck (180lb body)? And if that's the case, is it true that it causes instant unconsciousness so the person doesn't feel anything? I'm guessing a normal heavy duty rope would work. I have a safety rope that roofers use, and would like some insight. Thanks

Hypothetically speaking, if someone is planning to hang themself, the most important part is where the knot is placed. If the knot is placed at the rear of the neck, on the spine, you will just be strangled when you drop, however, if the person wishes to break their neck, the knot should be placed slightly to the side of the neck.
