  • What a voice. I'm in tears. Just incredible.

  • great performance... I was actually searching for louis armstrong singing this. Was the subject too delicate for him? sad, if this is the case...

  • one of the greatest vocals performances of all time.

  • thank you baby gumm...for all youʻve givinʻ us!!! you great & powerfull force of nature...a true wonder of the world...& all in a 4ʻ 11" vessel..full of passion full of joy full of sorrow...thank you for your honest expression...you moved us all...

  • amazing!!!!! wow!!!!

  • good god I am just seeing this for the first time..Unbelievable. You just want to sit at her feet and listen.... and then put your arms around her and take her home to protect her...what emotion, what a voice.

  • This was actually performed in the summer of 1963. Capital Records should have taken advantage of all the chances they had, with Judy recording different material. Stereo had been a mainstay since 1958 on lps, and easily could have been miked through the television recording devices. As before mentioned the orchestrations were stunning. I know that the conductor Mort Lindsay did many of them. Excellent work all around.

  • I have chills.. Everywhere. If I had a voice half as good as hers, I'm not sure what I would do!

  • So fabulous that this record of her talent exists. She really is in a class by herself.

  • Love the orchestration! My wish list. 1) That this was in stereo. 2) That Judy - later in life didn't take a breath after every two/three words....you lose the phrasing. Still incredible.

  • @JenningsRobert In 1939 there wasn't any kind of audio editing; and the recording system wasn's so advanced as today...

  • Genius

  • Nobody can hit that last note!

  • a lyric cuntralto)))

  • Did Paul Robeson ever sing The Man That Got Away? In Russian? Bless him. Love Paul Robeson. Judy does a terrific job with Mr Robeson's 'theme' song.

  • @TheAdelaidehall Actually Bledsoe was the first to play this part & hence perform the number "Ol' Man River".when SHOWBOAT opened in 1927. Miss Garland has not only the vocal chops, but the acting ability, and star quality to perform this song and make it harrowingly believeable and as large and all encompassing as can be. We could say it is as much HER theme song as anyones.

  • @MuzzyVanH Well done to acknowledge the great (& gay for those of us who care) Jules Bledsoe who did indeed introduce Ol Man River in the original 1927 Broadway version. But Paul Robeson made the song his own in 1928 when he introduced the song to British audiences in the 1928 London production of Show Boat. Sadly Mr Bledsoe passed away in 1943 and his contribution to popular song (& the concert stage) has been overlooked. A newsreel film of him in Britain is available on the Pathe website.

  • The greatest ever, there will never be another entertainer like Ms Garland.

  • No one, absolutely no one, sang this song with the power & emotion of Judy Garland! Metaphorically speaking, it's clear she could completely & honestly relate to every word.

  • She's remarkable. She does the meaning of the song justice and then makes it personal, yet still connecting with the audience (and viewers) with her passionate voice.

  • O.M.G. Pure raw emotion. Pure talent. Pure chills down my back.

  • I HAVE NOW REALIZED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY WRONG WITH THE HUMAN RACE THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY: 15 PEOPLE HAVE A SERIOUS MIND DISEASE AND DISLIKED THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you can feel the universe expanding with that final note

  • george gurdjieff once said that " artists are ill people " - better this illness than the madness of the weapon industry .....or even better - no illness AT ALL! many artists have sold their soul to the powers that be, like amalia rodrigues in portugal, zarah leander with hitler or gustav gründgens and furtwängler to goebbels, this never stops till today but still it is despicable.an artist with three brain cells should never join evil, nést ce pas, britney, you and BUSH?!

  • and considering this was the first episode she filmed of her series, I would've given her a standing ovation.

  • @millers3888 Oh, me too, me too! I would have ran up to the foot of the stage and cried "Judy, we Love You!!" and believe me, not many people in this would bring that out in me.

  • Extraordinary in every way, greatest ever "Ol Man River" and who knew it would be Judy Garland, sounding soulful & magnificent with that killer voice and drop dead gorgeous with depth of expression that is chilling...what an awesome performance, never before and never again...Bravo Judy, love and miss you and RIP sweet soulful lady...

  • the woman and song of my childhood

  • She was so beautiful I can hardly stand it!

    Her bone structure is perfect!

  • It's amazing, for size, she had such a powerful Contralto voice.

  • 15 people are afraid they'll be called gay if they hit "like"

  • @TheRatbert A real shame. It's not about being gay or straight, but appreciating the talent. Guys can't even like Christina Aguilera without being labeled gay, who is also extremely talented. Whatever, they're missing out on true art!

  • I like how she's scaled this performance for maximum dramatic impact. She was such a consummate old pro. The early verses may seem underplayed, but watch her face for clues to where she's going to take the song. She was an extraordinary actress.

  • My God-they don't make'm like that anymore. What talent-She was the best.

  • How I wish I could go back to 1939 and grab her and take her away from all the craziness. She might still be with us now and still singing.

The most beautiful voice of the century.

  • @grumpyotter The most beautiful voice ever*

  • @grumpyotter I doubt it-she loved her drugs too much.

  • @grumpyotter Not just of the century, but ever! And i guess the munchkins were right, she was a bust in the hall of fame!

  • @grumpyotter dear grumpyotter, But would she still have been Judy?

    Sincerely,

  • Another way of explaining her gift and how it affects us is identification. There are only two American female vocal artists that can strip me of all my defenses,

Judy Garland and Billie Holiday. They sang true and some of that truth was in my life, sad as it seems,it is the personification personified.

  • @loulou2lou what about Ella Fitzgerald?

  • She never stops amazing me.

  • judy that was beautiful. if i was there i would have gave her a standing ovation. from her magical voice to facial expressions she performed this so well

  • And beautiful.

Judy never thought she was pretty. So sad.

Why the natural beauty of this great talent was never appreciated is tragic,

  • GODESS!!!

  • Judy Garland had a sexy voice for singing. Very awesome video.

  • spiritual

  • Mike Nichols once said that her great gift was for telling the emotional truth in her songs, singing them as if they'd never been sung before. I think that's true here. I think if any artist, regardless of their race or background can do what she does here, with this kind of genius, then it would be wrong in every sense of the word to impose restrictions on what they can or cannot do with their art.

  • A part of me thinks she was too big for television - anyone know what I mean? It's as though the powerhouse quality in her performing a song gets lost a little; it's as though TV constrains her passion and a little gets diluted. Seeing her live must have been a mind-blowing experience!

  • The best and worst part of the song: "I am weary, and sick of trying. I'm tired of living, but scared of dying" How incredibly wonderful and sad that line is. She sings it with such passion, that I truly believe every word she says of that line. It's scary to wonder what if she had felt that way... is that why it's so convincing??

  • @rds020790 you are correct i saw that too.she was actually singing about her Own life in those lines. I gets weary and sick of trying I'm tired of living and scard of dying..notice the expression on her face for half a second. another part where she sings "bodies all aching annnnnnnnd wrecked with pain" I love the way she holds the word annnnnnnnnd. check out Judy performing old man river in the white gown on her show.1964. that line scared of dying she looks up at the sky and belts it out hard.

  • @VettieVet3 The song lyrics WERE written by white Oscar Hammerstein, though.

  • Comment removed

  • @VettieVet3 I sort of know what you mean. How I make sense of it, is to think of Garland singing the lyrics as a metaphor for Life's struggles - I guess then it puts us all (black/white or whatever) who can relate to it on an equal footing. I don't mean, however, to diminish in any way the Black experience of prejudice and oppression by applying the idea of a metaphor.

  • @hirchik--Anybody who criticizes Garland for singing this is an idiot. Two WHITES--Kern and Hammerstein II--created the musical "Showboat" and composed the music, including "Ol' Man River." The song is indeed about life's struggles, and Garland was perfect for this song.

  • @VettieVet3 I hear you I'm black too, from a HBCU College; African Diaspora; but also a Judy Garland fan. If you know anything about Judy Garlan you would know that many songs she sung were written for black artist because she was considered to have a black voice @ that time. She never offended me because she opened doors for other black artist of her time that would never have had that opportunity especially on her TV show. Most white singers grew up on black music; its not that deep.

  • @VettieVet3 Are you aware that a white man wrote the song? A song is a song is a song, Do I get offended when Barbara Streisand sings Christmas songs? I'd have to be an idiot to want to live in a world where I couldn't hear that.

  • OMG. What power.

  • how can i stop loving you Judy

  • we hear you lady, feel you and know that you understand how the worker is pumped up pushed out and then thrown away...

  • I love how she sings the lines "I'm tired of living but scared of dying " is so captivating, in word of Sinatra " every time she sings , she dies a little, that's how much she gives" she was beyond perfection :')

  • I love Judy...but this is just wrong...

  • @goodgirlkay why wrong? I'm curious as to what you meant.

  • her version of this was incredible. anyone who can't see this is missing something for sure.

  • Incomparable, irreplaceable and unforgettable

  • If this song is to be sung, then it needs to be sung by a large African American man.

  • 15 people hate true talent...

  • Comment removed

  • that people is called "belting". not the screaming we have today .....

  • She was the greatest..

  • Judy Garland gave too much to everybody all her life, except to herself. Only if she could of taken better care of herslf instead, than maybe she would't die so young. I love you Judy! Only if you knew waht a precious person you really are. RIP my dear Lady!

  • that was beautiful

  • One of the most captivating singers/performers of the last century. Singers like Garland come along once in a lifetime. How fortunate for all of us to have been witness to her amazing talents.

  • Here's the exact same video, but without any of the audio feedback.

    /watch?v=EteK3mYOtJc

  • Best version of this song. Ever. The emotion she puts into it knocks me down every time.

  • I think Adele should do this song. She could give it a go.

  • Everyone should watch "'Till the Clouds Roll By". It Is a wonderful musical about the like of Jerome Kern, Featuring musical performances by, Angela Lansburry, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Van Jonson and many more. It is a wonderful movie for anyone who loves classic movies like me.

  • @PuccallpaGirl YES! "Till the Clouds Roll By" is amazing. My first intro to Kern :)

  • Looking stunning, "Ol' Man River" is soulfully sung with remarkable vocal beauty...passionate performance from Garland so stunning leaving one breathless! Judy is a legendary genius and something this magnificent will never happen again...Bravo Judy & RIP

  • 2:35 ... now that's a note!!!

  • she simply lives what she sings.....with all her body and soul!!! tks Judy

  • Most comments talk about how deeply Judy dug into her emotions and how much of herself she gave. I'm not sure that I believe that... I don't think that she had to go within herself to convey the magic that we all feel from her. She simply had a gift that no other performer had or will have to penetrate the souls of all who experience her. I believe it is US more than herself that Judy is digging so deeply into... That is why in any of her performances she has us in the palm of her hand.

  • @cda345 I agree.Judy had a natural magic in her voice that just mesmerizes anyone who heard or hears her.but here, until she throws herself into it at the end, I think she looks bored. Sometimes though, you could hear slices of emotion that broke through the magic during some of her most heart wrenching performances that just cut through the heart. those are the performances that make everyone cry. Most Judy's songs do that but there are those special few that have real emotion in them

  • Judy you give to much

  • OMG. What great film-thanks!

  • Wow, this is GREAT!!!

A seriously talented lady... and this is a pleasure to watch

    DLrealife

  • Such an incredible voice!

And she was also very good looking, soooo beautiful that I can hardly stand it!

  • really didnt know that much about her but my god what a voice.

  • Pure class.

  • FIFTEEN PEOPLE ARE DEAF??!$@#&$&*8%^ for real? either that or they thinkin DIS I LIKEEEE...it's gotta be because this is amazing.

  • Judy's the American version of Edith Piaf---gives her all every time. Heart breakingly beautiful...

  • And let's be honest . . . how bad ass is her hair?

  • @Graphaks seriously! way ahead of her time on every level.

  • @DavidDiCarlo You are right on the button. Judy was indeed way head of her time - I mean, see any clip of her performing (particularly singing) and one would find it difficult not to believe that it could have been recorded yesterday (fashion and video/audio quality aside). She has an incredible awareness, her interpretation of a song comes from a place we can all identify with; the heart. And her heart reaches out to you only it seems, and she 'knows' that you feel the same..

  • @hirchik Exactly! She intuitively understood the core of a song and gave its lyrics and melody the distinct 'Garland Touch'. A songwriter's dream, and muse...never to be equalled.

  • @DavidDiCarlo I agree totally :)

  • And let's be honest . . . how bad ass is her hair?

  • @Graphaks she didn't need any fancy hair........just listen:)

  • Jeez only 918 likes out of 275000 views? Were you expecting a rap video, people? This lady is an icon of American entertainment history.

  • she put every ounce of her energy into everything she sang. it's like she's electrified.

  • In my humble opinion Ms Garland was the GREATEST ENTERTAINER of all time, she could do it all. There will never be another like her. It's to bad her life wasn't the best and she died way to young. RIP in peace Judy you are still missed.

  • @bobrett4 i agree with all of that

  • RIP Judy!! You were a true artist and fine human being!!

  • Simply Amazing!

  • recording over modulated - must find another one

  • Simply amazing...

  • She gives me chills. It's sad that she passed away at only 47. She is a legend

  • I've seen this a zillion times but I still get the chills everytime. I love you Judy. You'll always be the best!

  • @crazy4linda me too! what Judy could do with a song was astounding.

  • @crazy4linda You are right. She is simply the best performer ever.

  • I Garland, will knock you all down! thumbs up if you get the reference

  • I have to keep lowering the volume on my computer. She's breaking my speakers :)

  • Oh wow, Judy: your voice just breaks my heart

  • Wtf who in the world disliked this video? Jealous.

  • Oh Judy where have you gone

we are left with a sad shell of a world

no stars left to light the way

  • THANKS, HONEY...THANKS....MY DEAR JUDY....!!!. I LOVE YOU FOR EVER....!!!. MICHAEL ANGEL, FROM ARGENTINE.

  • that jump between her aging is so insane. it feels like it almost comes out of nowhere. like two different people. god, she had a sad life. i hope she rests in peace.

  • love how when her voice gets a bit shaky she throws herself into it and gets this awesome look on her face "I can do it. I'm good at what I do!" and brings her voice up to where she wants it to be for the end of the song

  • Holy shit that's powerful.

  • jeez...does it GET any better than this?

  • There is noone who sings that this..maybe Shirley Bassey..who is my favorite female singing today...but noone else..........ever.......

  • I'm delighted at the popular response to the fabulous Judy! I do hope that more of the younger generation "get's it" There were many greats during my generation that I believe to have been a "golden Era". It was a glimmer of the "renaissance" was like but in our more or less contemporary times. Children, wake up! The future depends upon you to conserve all of this. Do you waddle in ignorance? Wake up, I did when I was twelve! I came here, I taught myself English, I mastered it, I passed it on.

  • @FRANKHODGES39 but english not so good for saying just right, yes?

  • Carica! Bravo tetka, bravo...

P.S. Pokoj ti duši i carstvo nebesko, kad za života sretna nisi bila...

  • Very emotional singing was her style. The ending of this song gives me the chills. Thanks for posting.

  • Although a singer/artist dies their work continues to go on forever and inspire others.

Ms Judy Garland was truly one of a kind. Her vulnerability and emotion will continue to inspire singers for generations to come. THIs was the talented time - they couldn't rely on auto-tune. RIP Ms. Garland . .

  • @MsOtto68 She feeling the pain of this song, "tired of livin and scared of dyin". . She was great, the song so related to how she felt at times. Singers on american idol have acceptable voices, but too many of them aren't stage performers. To perform live, you gotta be acting too, and it can be more imortant sometimes times. Billie Holiday was like that, all style the way she sang. But Judy had both , perfect voice and emotion. And Beauty.

  • How marvelous she was when she was at her best.

  • Stunning

  • This will stand the test of time as one of the virtuoso vocals ever captured on television. JG never looked so incandescent. The well known comment by Tony Bennett ("Judy Garland was the greatest singer of popular songs of the twentieth century") seems almost a grudging understatement after hearing this incomporable performance.

  • She so adorable, she looks nervous in the begining...I'm not a huge fan of the song itself, but I can't help but listen just because of her voice in it. She's amazing.

She plays my heart strings like an instrument! (:

    <3

    <3

    <3

  • Truly, truly the best entertainer ever. Irving Berlin once asid, "No one sings my songs like Judy Garland,"

  • Judy Garland <3 :))))

  • JUDY!!!! Dies.

  • Here's the same video with much better sound quality.

    /watch?v=EteK3mYOtJc

  • The ending gives me chills.

  • She is gorgeous here.

  • God broke the mold when He made Judy. I came accross a guy on youtube called Jeff Dwyer who sings this song with a similar power and emotion. Does anyone know who he is?

  • wow love it love it :) jerome kern you genious =D i had no idea Judy did her own version !

  • And what about Sinatra and Caleb Peterson? Paul Robeson was nothing more than the man that introduced it, and made it available for better singers to interpret.

  • Comment removed

  • @ericlovesjudy What drugs are you smokin? This is Paul's song, although underated here in the US because of racism he was loved and adored the world over and was the first international superstar male in the world. And this was in the 1920's-40's. He was the absolute first. Not only was he the greatest bass singer. He was also an accomplished athlete, actor, and intellectual being the first black man to graduate from Rutgers Uni. and at the top of his class with a law degree. This man was GREAT

  • @ThePharaoho If you don't mind, might I suggest you listen to Robeson's version of Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child? And you decide for yourself. Like Judy, he was a very great singer and understood, like she the importance and meanings of the lyrics with their great distinctive and powerful interpretations and voices. I love them both!

  • @ThePharaoho

ok --- he was great --- so was Judy --- they are not mutually exclusive concepts

  • @mcmulj00 Yes, they both were weren't they? Their music and artistry are soarly missed in todays mainstream, however, they will remain forever legends.

  • @ThePharaoho He was a VASTLY over-rated Stalinist stooge lyingh lackey of the greatest mass murderer of the 20th century and a real sellout of his race and I've never heard him sing once that it moved me in the least. PHONY through and through.

  • @poetcomic1 Your opinion. Good night!

  • @poetcomic1 Hey, don't hold back, I mean, why not just come out with it and tell us all how you REALLY feel?

  • if it's not Robeson's ol' man river...gtfo. lol

  • @GoStE Why, because he's black? Judy Garland had vocal chops to hit the high notes, she also had the guts to be the first female to ever sing this song. And if Robeson is so great, where are all his millions of web pages, fan clubs, and people still TALKING about Judy Garland's version? The proof is there. If Robeson had performed it with this kind of intensity, he would still be remembered, but much more...look how long Judy holds the last note. Makes Robeson sound like a toilet flushing.

  • @ericlovesjudy I suggest you look up Paul robeson to see just how faous and revered he really is and why as a black performer of the 30's and 40's he would not have had the same kind of eposure as Judy Garland...who btw sang a great version of this song.

  • @cayasm That's only in the US because Paul Robeson was loved and adored the world over. Because of the racism in the US he was underated. What a shame!

  • Perfection. Gives me chills.

  • @LaCageAuxGypsy - I certainly would hope not.

  • Her belting the end of this amazing song right of this world and must still be reeling in outter space! I get the chills whenever I hear her this amazing tiny woman with a huge voice and huge heart!

  • Does anyone else want to sob when you see this? She just put so MUCH emotion into her songs and gave everything she got. She LIVED the lyrics of every song she sang.

  • nice:}

  • More talent in her little finger than today's 'singers' have in their entire bodies.

  • @PeterFormaini The trash we call "singers" today is a shame.

  • heartbreaking

  • This video should have more views then that..
