I too grew up listening to Mahawa and Sounjoulou. A remember they visited my village in Gambia, i think in late 70s. Fantastic time in my village and they sang songs in my native language, manding. While I do not dispute other opinions about their nationality, I was of the opinion that they were Gambian and I will perhaps continue to believe so.
OK, kabalabakulu, you win. You surely got your facts right and I was mistaken to suppose that Mahawa could not be anything but Senegalese. I have been listening to the diva's enchanting music ever since I was a boy and naturally came to think of her as a compatriot, which she is no less still, to me since she was married to a Senegalese and speaks Wolof like a native. @diopmad Yeah I do undersand you. Since I was little boy too, I used to think they were both guinean cause they sing in Mandingo (Malinké) which is my mother tongue in Guinea. I was very surprised when I found out last year Soudioulou were senegalese and the couple also living in Senegal. However, Mahawa is guinean by her origin but she remains senegalese because of her husband.
@diopmad Mahawa was born in 1949 in Guinea. Soundioulou met her in 1967 when she was only 18. He was invited in 1967 to the inauguration of the Palais du Peuple in Conakry and he was crowned "King of the Kora" by Ahmed Sekou Toure.
