  • give me your magical wizard powers and amazing bass

  • Are you using some kind of distortion, because my 4003 doesn't sound like that

  • I think Geddy Lee is a bit jealous...

  • This guy, this guy who plays all my favorite songs to a tee, he is dead?

What kind of cruel world is this?

  • Metallica and Megadeth are both terrible bands, Metallica would be the lesser of two evils i guess, but still both pretty bad.

  • epic vid

  • I don't even play bass, but I like they way do this one....nice

  • "a final leap forward, in time and in space"...R.I.P. it up Buddy !!

  • Nice job, we´ll be waitng for Freewill!

  • @chalambro Its unfortunte he didn't do it, we will never see it now :(, RIP Rob xx

  • why is it so hard for to get it through theyre heads it doesnt matter if someone uses a pick it doesnt change skill level its just theyre preference and the tone they want to go besides this guys is an amazing finger player too havent you seen his primus covers

  • (cont.) he can probably play a bass 30000 times better than any of u so shut up.and have some respect for the man.i mean come on he just past away so get over ur childish crittisism

  • hey for all you gay mother fuckers complaining the guys a fucking legend.....respect that, and you cant tell him how he should play a bass.

  • rip dude u were a sick ass bassist you will be missed.

btw mad good bassists play with a pick, matt freeman, justin chancellor, flea on occasion, chris squire, john entwhistle

  • @FlyinTonite pick or finger it doesnt matter they are all good i play with my fingers because i like the tone better but i like the tone of a bass thats picked too just depends on my mood i've been playing for 5 yrs and have never felt that i need to play one way or the other

  • Playing with pick requires at least as much practise as playing with fingers. I know that, i am a bassist and i play with fingers, i have tried pick but i just dont get the feeling to the strings. And yes im a huge fan of RUSH but not any kind of purist. I find it refreshing when people do things differently. And i think that playing with pick is as cool as playing with fingers, look at Paul McCartney, David Ellefson, Jason Newsted...

  • I agree

  • Covers were meant to sound different.

McCartney used a pick, and I certainly wouldn't say that his tone had the "deep" taken out of it.

Besides, you're a fucking guitarist. What the hell do you know about playing bass? Go back to playing guitar.

  • You know nothing about bass playing, plus the guy is dead, so its not exactly he can take notice or anything.

  • Indeed. People should have some respect.

  • You try to play bass yet hate Paul McCartney? Just shut the fuck up already. You clearly have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

Chris Squire, one of the greatest bassists, uses a pick.

  • @Sartori Yeah Chris is awesome. He actually plays with a thumb-pick technique.. His thumb hits the string a milli-second before his pick does.. Really innovative

  • Chris Squire, Carol Kaye, John Entwistle, Paul McCartney aren't real bassists? All have played with a pick.

You could just as easily say that real bassists play with a bow, not their fingers.

  • WOW..i've always been a sucker for a Rickenbacker..and you just reminded me why..Excellent..

  • If you want to troll videos and act like an ass, go somewhere else. That shit doesn't fly here.

  • Everything they put out is gold? i love metallica like none else, but every past S/T is horrible, nothing but complete garbage from them now-a-days.

  • I love the rush covers that you putting out. it's really amazing love it a lot. man seeing you play the bass guitar makes wanna get a bass. I always love to play the bass. first heard Rush in Guitar Hero 2 YYZ. and I was looking in there previous albums and heard some of it and most there songs are great, lonely got into them like a month ago. but love to more of there songs!...keep it metal!!!

  • that was 10 different kinds of badass.

  • More like, 10 different kinds of bass playing. WOW

  • wow love your own little style you added to this

  • Geddy doesn't pick this song, does he?

  • Heck no, and sometimes I don't either. But I wanted this rendition to be busier than the original.

  • Excellent job 5/5

In my opinion, aside from tearing up songs with that bass of yours, I like the fact that you recognize your faults, it shows that even a bassist at his best can make mistakes, but to point them out to people who wouldn't even recognize it takes a whole lot to do

  • LOL...thanks. I've been pointing to my faults in one way or another from the beginning. I do not want people to get the impression that I consider myself anywhere near perfect. But then again, if I didn't do it, someone would be sure to do it for me. Youtubers can be brutal, especially with Rush.

    Keep on rockin'

  • Very cool!

  • that is such a beautiful bass guitar man

  • Thanks. Up close she's a bit beat up, but then again I have been playing her since 1987, and she was 13 year old then.

  • pure awesomeness

  • you should cover metaalica orion its a great bass song

  • Sorry....I will NEVER play Metallica. Many here know why.

  • Comment removed

  • why wont u play metallica? are u a megadeth only fan cuz i like both

  • Because I will not promote the music of a business....a band for sure, but not a business. Megadeth is a band...Metallica is a business.

They can use their high-powered lawyers and their megacorporate PR firms to promote themselves without us poor youtube nobodies.

  • very true

  • I couldn't agree more nor could I have said it better my self. Cliff is rolling over in his grave because of the atrocities committed by the pail comparison that Metallica has become , both musically and diabolically corporate.

  • Sorry if I came off kinda harsh...it's not you (and no, I did not rate your comment down). I just really hate Metallica, and it has nothing to do with their music.

  • hemm, my bass teacher said the same thing.....

    (about metallica)

  • uff this is a great one :) more rush pls :)

    *akhm tom sawyer

  • This is a great rendition of a great song. Keep it up, man. It's kind of weird saying this since you put up mostly covers but you're actually a big influence on my playing. Since I've discovered your videos I've started adding my own spin to songs when I play them. Plus you introduced me to Danava and Screaming Headless Torsos.

  • Thanks, man. Personally, I would love it if every bass player added their own element to tunes. We are blessed with an instrument with very little overtone presence that can get away with this sort of thing. Every bass player is different, and that difference can serve as a "fingerprint" that can be recognized instantly provided the bass player expresses himself freely. Besides, 90% of basslines are boring and need supping up (not this one, of course...lol).

  • Wow, wow, triple wow. I love it, great job. Maybe the tide has turned my friend. Back at it I say!

  • The tide is turning, mein freund, but it will take a few more weeks for the floodgates to open fully.

  • I'm restoring an old lawsuit-era Aria Pro copy of the 4001/4003 bass. Seeing you play is lighting a fire under me to get it up and running again! :-) The previous owner(s) didn't take very good care of it, I'm afraid...but the finish is still good, so it's mainly hardware that I have to replace.

  • Last I checked, it was hard to get Rick pickups. If you have to go with something else, go with the Bertolinis. The Seymour Duncans eliminate the treble punch and there are complaints of a background hum you cannot get rid of.

  • That's good to know, because I was planning to use Duncans. If you keep your eyes open, you can find genuine Ric parts on Ebay, but the condition will vary widely and the prices are always very high. I need a replacement bridge and tuners for sure... probably go with Hipshots for both.

  • Ripping it up as usual mate.

  • Dude I just realized you have a Rickenbacker right?

If not correct me if I'm wrong.

  • You are not wrong, so no correction will be forthcoming.

  • great job man! I always love hearing a good prog tune. Saw Rush on my birthday when they were doing the S&A tour. Most bad ass concert ever!! and even if the purists get angered by such moot things, I highly doubt Geddy himself would mind....

  • Geddy is a god of the bass, totally! I have always put my own spin on everything, and I do not apologize for it. What gets me is that a lot of purists come to my channel and act as if I am claiming perfection, using that false assumption as the basis for acting like a douchebag. I should tell them if they want that, go to fcbv's channel. He is awesome, but way more disciplined than I am.

I'm a grip it and rip it kind of bass player.

  • maybe, but you have better dynamic control and rhythm.

  • Way to go Rob - I love this tune - Now that I believe the ban has been lifted - the flood gates will open. You def. nailed this one !

  • Well, it will take a couple of weeks for all bands to be lifted from autoblock, as some of my fellow LRRGs found out last night...but Rush is okay. Soon, all will be opened.

  • Great stuff yet again. I saw Rush on their S&A tour in Glasgow a couple of years back and the show fell a bit flat in the second set when they were playing their newer songs. Then they played Natural Science and we were restored!

  • i love rickenbacker

  • rushes time signatures are so awesome! great job!

  • Rush, King Crimson, and Tool are in my opinion the greatest bands on the face of the earth due to the passionate vocals and complex, yet subtle time signature rythyms. im glad human beings have the freedom of expression.

  • Awesome job, this has always been one of my favorite Rush tunes.

  • nice

  • YES! WMG isn't being fags anymore!

  • Comment removed

  • very cool. I'm waiting for a YYZ cover.

  • he has one up on youplayalong(dot)com.

  • Awesome !!!

Nice to see how you beat the shit out of that bass and yet make it sound so excellent :-D

And nevermind the purists...a cover is a tribute to the artist and not just repeating what he already did...keep it up ironfist !!!

by the way,how about some Lemmy ???

  • Kick ass job Rob! I forgot how cool this tune was... I only have it on vinyl (don't have a player) so I never hear it anymore. EPIC

  • You make picking sound cool "PLECTRON!!" Very nice cover once again, nice to see some Rush :) Keep it up!

  • Fan. Tastic.

Honestly, just amazing. Great rendition. You made it yours.

  • Absolutely brilliant!

Watching and listening to stuff like this reminds why I so desperately want a Rickenbacker. Your tone is absolutely perfect for this song. Now you need to play more old school rush. Lessons and Something for Nothing off of 2112 would be beyond awesome!

Also, I am curious to know how thick your bass pick is. Nothing I play with feels like it has the right balance between solidity for the sharper tone and flexibility for easier strumming.

  • I use Dunlop Tortex picks...0.88mm thick.

  • Haha cool, same as me... the usual green ones or the white ones with the green turtle? :D

Awesome cover once again, glad to see you back ;)

And now, as WMG isn´t so pissed anymore, you should bring some Primus and RHCP in here, mate!

  • Oh yeah...I have a version of Best I Can and Twilight Zone that I will probably release soon, as well. I shot all three of these Rush vids on the same day (as well as the Rage one I released weeks ago on youtube)

  • Comment removed

  • hmmm....TwilightZone. How about Golden Earring Twilight Zone. That could stand some more cowbe... I mean, bass!

  • OH yeah baby!!

  • Thought it is a pick, it sounds amazing! I've been waiting for some more tunes from you, and lo and behold one of my absolute favourite Rush songs. Thanks man! Lovin' it, keep up the astounding work.

  • I learned all of the Rush I know with a pick, and so it comes more naturally to me to remember how to play the song at the same time as playing it when I have the ole pick in hand. Then all I have to worry about is which notes instead of how I am articulating them.

    Glad you liked it.

  • Good stuff. True it isn't the way Geddy plays it in most parts, but I just consider it LRRG'd which is good in itself. I wonder what another good Rush bass song would be.

  • LOL...practically all of them!

  • the more rush, the better

  • Glad to see your posting more Rush. Gotta love Geddys playing. How you can decipher his playing is beyond me. I could never do that man. Amazing.

  • Well, it is not all the way done yet. The deal is signed, but the blocks are still on for some bands, it seems. We should give it a few weeks to see all of the block removed.

    wiredDOTcom/epicenter/2009/09/warner-music-group-signs-youtube-deal/

  • You're a WILD MAN!!

  • I love you and would like to have ur babeyz. Do you use like secret deodorant of the gods? Like Jesus in a can. If I spray Jesus piss on my armpits, will I be as good as you?

  • Your notes come out so easy. How low is your action?

  • So glad Rush is finally fair game again! Your Rush covers are some of my favorites of yours.

  • 5 stars before i even clicked play!

  • fantastic playing on a fantastic song choice.....and I may just do it myself, if Rush is now really safe again. (or maybe The Camera Eye...hmmm...)

This is one that I'd wanted to do, until the hammer came down. but if it's really ok now, then I'm going to have to get my Geddy hat back out.

(and major props for almost ALL DOWNSTROKES with that EVIL pick!)

  • The Camera Eye....dammit Spector, you just snagged my next one! LOL.

And I like downstrokes for anything that needs to be punctate like Geddy on this tune. With fingers or upstrokes, the tone is not as even.

  • The Camera Eye's been one of my faves since I discovered Rush for myself back in the late 1980s.

  • GOOD :D

  • Fantastic cover! I am so glad that WMG might be changing their ways.

  • Yes! Robsh (Rush + Rob) is back in the YouTube airwaves! Exciting day for us LRRG's, sir!

  • Yes, indeedy do!

  • Incredible job as always. I'm glad to see some Rush from you now that it is allowed. Can't wait for the next Rush one. Awesome cover.

  • If you pay attention to the MF5 channel in the next couple of weeks, you will not be disappointed....trust me. I even did some keyboards for it!

  • you did such a sick job on an awesome song by rush. permanent waves is one of my favorite rush albums, and this song is amazing. you played fantastically and i still marvel at how well you play the 4 string.

  • Thanks, man. I am far from perfect, but I try really hard...lol.

  • havnt heard a rush song in a while

  • great job, Natural Science is 1 of my fav Rush songs

  • me 2

  • Great song choice! Reminds one of how much of a madman Geddy Lee is on the bass!

  • He is a God on the bass. I, however, and a mere mortal.

  • Letting Rush covers on youtube is good news for me. Soon enough I can start doing my own covers while watching awesome covers like this one.

  • All is right in the world, is it not? Well, maybe not the world, but on youtube things are looking pretty spiffy!

  • Now all we have to do is make sure Disney does NOT purchase YouTube. I'm serious; they're trying.

  • man..disney is taking over the god damned world...

  • awesome job,i love rush and you did an awesome cover.

  • Thanks a ton, man.

  • Alright! Been waiting for a while now to see another video. Awesome job, I like how you play your own unique way, makes for a more entertaining experience.

  • Yeah, I have been busy with a few collaborations with MF5 that are coming out soon. But the good thing is WMG has now allowed us to post vids of their songs, and so I am taking advantage of the material I released elsewhere.

Thanks for the compliment. It's not for everybody, but I certainly do appreciate the ones who it is for.

  • Good that WMG finally let musicians be musicians and pay tribute to their idols. That whole thing was ridiculous. I can't wait to see the collaborations, you guys are awesome!

  • Oh great, I'd love to see all the old videos that got shot down back on here. And you should keep postin the audiofiles up because I love listening to your bass covers of songs!

  • Thanks, noyes. Some of my audios are better than others. Depends on how much time I spend on learning the tune first. For this one, I spent a couple of hours re-learning the tune (hadn't played it in 15 years) and decided to improvise the fills instead of painstakingly going through each one and memorizing it.

So please forgive the flubs and stuff...lol...that is the short way of saying it.

  • firstt. good job

  • FIRST!
