Are there any problems with an unsealed wooden utensil absorbing food fats or anything over time? i.e. Making it harder to clean or having a bad smell? Thanks
when carving spoons & bowls do you use green wood or seasoned? i have been told to use green wood but every time i do the finished spoon splits as it drys. is there a way to prevent this?
Wood cracks due to the difference in drying times between the heartwood and sapwood. So I guess don't try to use both, but I'm no expert. (I'm having trouble with that too.)
Thanks for sharing Toni, I have not much birch here in Missouri,USA, I may have to go attack my neighbors birch tree with a chainsaw. I have started to use Sassafras, it isn't too hard. Pat
Toni, My brother told me about your videos. Great! I have to agree with baconsoda and premoderne. The background sounds from the forest and your quiet, steady work are much better than any soundtrack on the market.
For my brother, who just bought a couple of hook knives, how do you sharpen a hook knife?
Thanks for your comment. "how do you sharpen a hook knife"? Seven simple words, I only wish it could be described with as many. The only advice I can give is obtain a good understanding of what sharp is, once you achieve this, choosing sharpening tools will become a personal preference.
great sets of videos , what make of knifes are you using ???

I see your stool is half of a log but how do the tripod legs hold under it. - I'm trying to make one like you!
By the way, your videos are very inspiring - It's amazing to watch your skill. Shows me what I might be able to do if I keep carving.
Thanks!

Watched all three videos, very impressive. I love the comparison at the end, log/spoon.

Thanks for your comment. There are many reasons why wood cracks - too complex to go into. Try drying at a low temperature and slowly.
