A very good friend of mine just gave me his 1972 88 key Mk 1!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it!!! He said it hadn't been used in years, and wanted me to have it, as he knew I would use it the way is should be used. Has the original warrantee card and manual!!! And repair kit! But, the only problem is, the bridle straps that pull the damper off the tines ar snapped on the lower half of the keyboard. But that's about it!
@plungerdrum Wow that's excellent, you've got good friends! If you go to any piano store you should be able to get spare bridle straps, just make sure you get them in the right size :)
Nice work, what's the escapement on the Rhodes and what level did you tune it to? I'm trying to bell like sound in your video however my model (same as yours) is more mellow tone (i.e Chameleon-esque)
The escapement setting on the Rhodes, using the back screw of the tonebar...the one closest to the keys, should be 3/8". I went to Builders Square and bought a piece of 3/8" lathing. I had to measure a couple of different strips to find one tht was the right dimensions. I thin cut it into three strips - and using elmers white glue - laminated them together. Works great for a measuring shim.
Addition to my comment. The escapement measurement is the distance between the top of the harp and the underside of the tonebar. The shim should be placed on the harp, under the tonebar being adjusted, and the screw on the tonebar tightened just until the shim can be slid in and out under the tonebar smoothly. Once this is done than the overtones are set by using the front screw on the tonebar...then the escapemant should be tweeked after the tone is set.
Cheers Rob, I've heard that the overtones should be altered for the bass/middle/treble? As you don't need too much bark for the lower register, at the moment I've set it to the factory setting. What do you think?
amazing sound - would never get rid of my Mk1. Its a great instrument - feel wise, sound wise. Its got a soul you just cannot recreate no matter what anyone says.
The Real Rhodes pianos have such a sound that cannot be copied synthesized.....I've pecked on one not knowing it was a rhodes until later on, and ever since I've tried to figure out why that piano was so special.....it's hard to explain. :-)
That's a very agressive sound... i'm sure it has a lot to do with the recording quality, but MAN i wish my Nord Stage rhodes had the possibility to be that agressive.
A few more months until i can afford my own real Mk I though... can't wait.
you're not gonna get a very playable rhodes out of that budget ... you'll likely be better off with a more expensive rhodes that won't cost you a fortune on restauration.
buy a midi keyboard, and a virtual rhodes maybe the native instruments one, and hook it up to your computer. You can get an entire MIDI keyboard and software for under $500, and it will be great sound. Of course it's not a real rhodes, but that's not in your budget.
It's the same with pianos. Virtual pianos are so good now, it no longer makes sense to lay out $8,000 for a decent piano unless you really need it, (and you have to constantly retune it), when a virtual piano is just a cd-rom.
there is something really fun about the weight of those rhodes tho .. its not just about the authentic sound - the action its pretty neat too.
its probably the biggest problem with buying them these days - the action is so fucked on so many of them these days, but in good condition, damn they feel good
This is my first time seeing a real Rhode performance, that was a very good display. I love it and I love what you're doing with it, you're something special.
Rhodes can fit whatever music one wants to use it for ... music is for self-expression and fun, P2T .. awesome playing .. dont listen to this music-nazi
Sounds great. The rhodes had a really warm sound. But in fact all us players would strive for this cutting sound in a live situation. Otherwise you were just mud in the middle of the mix.
my left ear enjoyed this, thanks :)

I do like the Rhodes sound, real sweet and smooth. But I am more of a Wurlitzer guy, I just like that sharp hum of a good ole' Wurli 200.
