I think you could use any organic derived glue but rabbit skin is very traditional and original gesso and bole tend to have rabbit skin glue in them and the acrylic substitutes dont seem to do the job for me.
That good video, I learned something else, although I would like to highlight is one where the manipulation of Polish and other tools. Greetings from Caracas, Venezuela.
One of the few free video records of water gilding allowing interested laypersons to simply observe and appreciate the process. I guess he's restoring the mirror as it doesn't look new.
awesome. thank you. so what is the surface of your palette made of? are you putting a little bit of oil on your bristles? Nobody knows anything about this in america, you must be european.
OK, *THIS* video is worth its weight in gold (stupid pun not intended) Actual handling of leaf is something that cannot be described in a book or fully conveyed by just a photograph. I sure wish I had seen video this prior to burning up two booklets of 23K learning how to handle the stuff... Thank you for posting it.

how to handle gold leaf is just practice i have been through at least 50 books when i started just to become half good

I just ordered my first Gold leaf kit.
Can you suggest an easy project to practice on?
Do I use wood? Metal? Ceramic? Do I paint the surface first? If so with what type of paint?
After watching this video I'm a little nervous at starting.
Thanks
Pat
