  • Everything said i thought dune was an utterly utterly awful film

  • Better than the fucking "Syfy Channel" bullshit.

  • The book is pretty much unfilmable (as a normal feature-length movie). So within those impossible constraints, I think Lynch's 'Dune' is actually quite an achievement. It ends up as a mess because there are too many elements to fit into two hours. But the visual feel, the design, the ambience and the cast are excellent. It's a world that feels nuts - eccentric, weird characters with stylised performances and great quotable lines. I like the score as well. It's a glorious failure.

  • While the Lynch version may not follow the book quite as much as the newer version, I find it to be a much better telling of the story, and a much more enjoyable film.

  • I love Lynch's dune, but I'm unsure as to whether I like the film or just Lynch's style.

  • so this is the man who ruined dune?? dickhead

imagine if this film was directed by ridley scott?

  • Even though the film isn't as good as it could be it's still a great piece of Sci-fi. I didn't get it first but as an adult I really like it. The Theme music at times is absolutely brilliant. It would be excellent for David Lynch's version to be made true as much as possible to the book. I love the sets and visuals. That would be brilliant.

  • so he spent 18 months trying to make this understandable...

  • Only the final product matters. Simple logistics are the reason for Dune’s 135 minute running time. In those days it was the longest a film could be and still enable theatres to do 2 shows per evening (when reel 2 started, the 1st reel was brought to another auditorium and started after fifteen minutes “spill over” time.) Oh, and I’m not high and mighty, I just so happen to agree with Lynch who called the film an “empty product that waterskies on the surface.”

  • @usernamenancy

David is a visual auteur based primarily in the realm of dreams and dream-like logic...as his body of work clearly demonstrates...I always tend to view his use of dialogue in that respect...perhaps you don't. I think we've exhausted this now...the discussion is getting both boring and circular. Bye.

  • @roachy333 Bye? Already? Too bad. It was just getting interesting – and I was about to tell you about the David Lynch Q&A I attended in 2006 @ de vrije universiteit Amsterdam when I was but a fifteen year old brat! Oh well. Have a good one and watch out for stupid moviegoers who don’t love the same crap you love! ;)

  • David Lynch...a true dope fiend...

  • "I thought he said "June" instead of "Dune"... and so I read it...[and after I talked to him for an hour about the book "June" I'd just read he was like... dude, the name of the book is "Dune"]" fixed.

  • i think lynch is a master of chamber movies - small towns local mysteries dialogs - but dune is more like symphonie - emperial stuff

  • @131KrisKelmi I think Lynch could probably have a go at pretty much anything in his own unique way if he wanted to...

  • @drewhohmann Oh Im sorry.

  • @drewhohmann There is no "Harold" in Eraserhead it is Henry Spencer.

  • An actual STARGATE/PORTAL-THING was captured on film. The footage can be found within the short-film entitled "SUDDEN PORTHOLE", which is currently parked at the PROJECT CAMELOT YouTube page (it's under the George Noory video).

I'm not selling anything...I'm just trying to spread the word about the unseen-dimensions we find ourselves embedded in.

My BLOG contains the peripheral data regarding the movie and is where I reply to the "debunkers" (use search words "Sam Zurick" & "BLOG"). THANKS!!

  • @drewhohmann It seem's to grow as he talk's haha !

  • audio too low

  • Book aside, this is a very epic film that I can only call The Four Feathers or Laurence of Arabia in Space.

If it wasn't for this film I would never have read the books, nor played the games. Its a "compressed" film with so much to say but not enough time to say it all(bit like life!) but it has a lot of spirit.

  • After Dune he learned his lesson so when Lucas came along and ask him to direct Star Wars 2 or 3 he glad fully declined...LOOL

  • he looks exactly the same as now

  • David Lynch looks like Jonathan Ross here

  • I love the movie for it's beautiful pictures, actors, and music alone.

Too bad they didn't do it like Lotro - I mean in 3 parts and much longer.

  • Brown hair on Lynch is weird to me.

  • Worst movie of David. Wonder why? He did not had final cut!

  • I like David Lynch but this movie bored me. I couldn't finish watching it.

  • a big leap ... thats a huge leap ...

  • David Lynch's Dune works as a fantastic visual companion to the epic novel. I rather enjoy it. Mr. Lynch also brought some great ideas to the film which were not a part of the book that fit in seamlessly. Well done, sir.

  • Love ya David, but this is one movie I can't stomach.

  • @suspekt29 If you dont understand Alchemy you wont understand Dune.

  • @Xare420 Its hard enough to understand his directing style as is, not sure if you like Twin Peaks, but I uploaded a few videos from the Fest I attended last week on my channel

  • Lynch's Dune is wasted on the typical film goer....

Star Wars seemed to set a standard that was so low in Sci-Fi....particularly on the intellectual level...that this movie had no chance, with its substance.

I think Dune is an outstanding movie on so many levels....yes it has its faults, but it is still a remarkable piece of cinema. Criminally underrated...and I wish David would be more positive about it. As a director you are as good as your worst...maybe he'll get over it one day!

  • @roachy333 You're comparing a piece of science fantasy (Star Wars) to a film which attempts to cram arguably the greatest science fiction novel into two hours. It's not really fair. Dune was always going to suffer from trying to put such a large book into a film format. I don't think Star Wars should be derided just because it's not as deep as Dune is. Maybe if Dune had been longer or released as a series of films it would have worked better.

  • @theredraven I was going to comment on that person's tragically ignorant rant but you beat me to it and did so more eloquently than I could have hoped. Thanks.

  • @roachy333 It's underrated because it butchered the story, die-hard dune fans (which is basically anyone who ever read the original books) disliked it as a result and barely anyone else cared enough to watch it.

  • @Doombug5000

By 'it'.....you obviously mean studio (as any die hard Dune film fan would know)

....as in De Laurentis/Universal....the final cut issue.

  • @roachy333 Actually 'it' was referring to the film itself. I suppose it would be more accurate to say the film was a butchered version of the story. If you wish to dispute this (although there is far more wrong with it) all I have to do is say 'Sonic weapons', apparently David Lynch didn't like the idea of "Kung-fu on sand dunes".

Addition of a major plot device/tool is the worst kind of book to film heresy.

  • @roachy333 Totally. Lynch's film making style turned out a unique sci-fi film. God can you imagine if he did Return of the Jedi?? That movie could never have contained him!

  • @ummagumma00

Hey...Lucas even gave a bit of kudos to Dune....with the Sarlacc scene in Jedi...lifted straight out of Dune imo. Lynch doing Jedi is as a scary...as Lucas doing Apocalypse Now for me....'cept Lucas very nearly did do Apoc Now....thank God Star Wars kept him out of that equation!!!! See, I'm not totally against George...he does have his uses.

  • @roachy333 I would concur with your assesment. I would like to add that the movie would have been better with all the deleted scence. Dune should have been around at least 6 hours long.

  • @roachy333 well said...I do love star wars but there is a time and a place for deeper stuff I guess....Blade Runner is possibly the best film ever made but flopped on release, like Dune...and yeah, I wish Lynch would stop disowning it...it#s epic and very long as it his, I think his full 4 hour intended version would have just been too much...the only bits I dislike about the film are the mostly pointless patronizing voiceovers down to the studio (except the cool 'fear is the mindkiller' bit)..

  • @roachy333 ..and another thing that annoyed me was that Sting did not get the shit kicked out of him enough by Kyle...he's a bit of a prick anyway but especially irritating to see in this...

  • @roachy333 Lynch dislike the film because it has little substance and lacked what made the books demanding, challenging, and rewarding. Example: the narrator says, "Paul and Chauni's love grew." *insert 3 second close-up of the couple kissing* - that was all the time the film could spend on the romance before needing to rush to the next watered down part of the story. Audience weren’t interested in reduced-to-shallow-stock-figures characters lost in an underdeveloped, murky story.

  • @usernamenancy

Can't agree..who do you imagine the typical audience are..Stephen Hawking? I'd say 'popcorn eaters' would be more likely...post Star Wars etc. You've totally overlooked the studio's impact on the film post production (outside David's scope) & the final cut issue etc. The original intention was to make a cut of say 3-4 hrs..still probably wouldn't be enough to do the book justice, but moreso obviously. Those the main reasons imo, that and a hit to David's ego.

  • @roachy333 I'm not judging the Dune that could have been or should have been, but the Dune that is. And Dune as it is, isn't a "smart" movie (or, better said, a film people like to refer to as “smart” so they can congratulate themselves on their above average-intelligence) but a murky, corners-cutting mess populated by characters we never really get to know or care for. That is why the film bombed and why Lynch was dissatisfied with it. (Read the book “Lynch on Lynch” for more info.)

  • @usernamenancy

I love Dune the film and find its neo-baroque imagery and fantastic soundscape...a wonder to behold...the whole debacle of the film centres around De Laurentis and their handling of the material...my original point accepts many faults, faults that I'm willing to forgive.

It is an adaptation of the book...so strict comparisons are somewhat moot. Books are for reading, films are for watching. Who cares if it bombed..not me?

It has a huge cult following.

  • @roachy333 Yes, it has a cult following. Yes, books are for reading and films are for watching. So? I already said a film should be judged on what it is (not on studio politics or on how long the first cut was). And Dune is a film that lacked the time to properly develop its story and characters. You loved the film – good for you! But don’t get all high and mighty by saying it has substance (if only it had any!) and is wasted on the typical filmgoer you’re so keen to look down on.

  • @usernamenancy

Some wonderful performances too...my favourite being Sian Philips and I always enjoy Max Von Sydow...I wish he had more screen time.

Not so much look down on...I think my loathing of Star Wars (where I can't see past the awful dialogue) might have pushed me to the point of exaggeration.

It's still one of the most visually stunning sci-fi films ever made...I'm more than happy with that. Frank loved the sets too..they were just as he had written & envisaged them.

  • @usernamenancy

So? Their will always be issues trying to condense a book like that to film...even if it was 3-4 hrs long. Perhaps it required a trilogy format...to do it justice.

No substance at all? What none, zilch, nada?

...now look who is getting all high & mighty. :-)

  • @roachy333 Funny, seeing as dialogue isn’t exactly Lynch’s strongest suit either. (Both directors have been good sports about this artistic weakness in interviews). I like Star Wars AND Dune but am a fan of neither.

  • @roachy333 That's just hipster bullshit, it's not because a movie is hollywoodian and mainstream that it can't deal with clever and important themes and subjects, as star wars does.

If you want something more artsy, watch THX 1138.

  • @roachy333 you're an idiot and so are the 27 other idiots who have no taste in movies that thing star wars set the standard of sci-fi low. star wars set it so high that no movie has ever touched it... yeah. the typical film goer is stupid. but you're smart. f-ck you. the typical movie goer is smarter then you... and by the way i love this movie.

  • @scarface9000

You total fuckwit...you've probably never seen 2001 ASO...otherwise you wouldn't have embarrassed yourself so thoroughly in such a public way. I shit people like you...now you fuck off.

  • @roachy333 2001 is one of my favourite movies you piece of garbage. you're a loser just face it. there's a reason why movies are popular. the greater something is the more popular is becomes. that is why 2001 is so popular 45 years after it came out. that's why it is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. that is why star wars 4 and 5 are so popular. because they are great.... now go eat sh-t, you f-cking loser. stop embarrassing yourself.

  • @scarface9000 " the greater something is the more popular is becomes." So, by your logic, Justin Bieber's music, contemporary romance novels and films like the Twilight Saga are great because they are in fact popular. Okay.

  • David has the most fantastic hair in the universe...

  • Btw its funny too see that David Lynch brought so many actors from Dune into twin peaks :D

  • @killerbee2k

How great is Big Ed (Stilgar) in this....I so love his voice?

  • One of the top 3 movies of all time. I love it, its awesome. Not only a great tribute to Frank Herberts Dune, it totally crushes the mini series. Its also a great movie in its own right even if you are not a Dune fan.

  • @killerbee2k

    Good man...you know your onions.

  • I dont think David was the right person for this movie!

  • Is this from the extended edition DVD?

  • @TheNEWfilmfanatic99 - It is from the French DVD (also available on Blu-ray)

  • glad i didnt produce it....

  • It's a mixed movie, it doesn't know that it's either a triumph or a trainwreck. That's the problem with this movie, it's good as a Lynch movie but bad as an adaptation of the most awesomest Sci-fi novel ever, i still think Alejandro Jorowosky who had that brilliant 10 hour movie would have been great or Ridley Scott for an 8 hour movie.
