By the same token, if you don't like my comments then feel free to ignore them! I'm clearly not worth your time if you consider me to be the loud-mouthed malcontent you describe! Besides, I never said I had a problem with Stephen Fry, just his idolatrous legion of fans who revere him as God when he is in fact just a silver-tongued television entertainer, not a real intellectual.
The way he says "Hello and welcome to the Bafta's" is - in my opinion - even more hilarious than "the where's mein handy" ...You gotta love Stephen anyway :))
Camp is a slang term for gay. This is really funny because while Stephen is gay, he is clearly not camp. So him doing a camp accent is amusing. XD At the very least to myself.
I think it's not JUST the intonation and the stresses on the "wrong" syllables that make Stephen's German accent hilarious. I think it's the way he licks his lips, as he mimes looking for his "handy." That may make me sound like a right perv, but I don't care. I love Stephen Fry so much, that he is worth the risk of possible accusations of perversion on YouTube...that I will of course deny, emphatically.
I went to a supermarket yesterday and I found some Cornflakes which were called "Gut for u". People think that using english words for certain products makes them more attractive for customers, but they very often don't know what the words actually mean. The best example fot that is probably the motto of a perfume shop: Come in and find out...
oh that had me clapping like a seal i swear. i have german cousins and whenever they refer to their 'handy' i feel like clobbering them over the head with it.
We had a visiting professor from Germany come speak to my journalism class and he mentioned how they called the mobile phone a handy, and I burst out laughing thinking about Stephen's campy German accent.
Stephen's talents seem endless. His take-off of other accents is so accurate, and very funny. He should be recognised for his contribution to entertainment at the very least. Others have received awards for much less.
Yeah. He's supremely talented at what he does. I mean, he and Hugh Laurie do American accents SO well. Name me one American who can acceptably fake a British accent...
Maybe because most stereotypes of Germans in English comedy are of the screaming ''Nazi''', some English speaking people arn't aware of the subtelty of the German language.
MilkyWay, it hasn't got anything to do with being German. Stephen could say it in some ancient dialect spoken in the remotest regions of Siberia and it'd still be funny... because it's Stephen, and because the campy inflection and searching motions he does are so very... well, campy.
Well, Germany does hold a lot of stereotypes of camp, you've got the gay German bathhouses and bars, and impressions like Stephen's... Germany is just one of those countries. Not that it's justified, and I'm not trying to laugh at Germany, but it's just easier to make fun of than, say, Siberia.
the "a" in "handy" sometimes sounded too german (="aaaah"). actually, "handy" is pronounced "händy" (>> germans trying to speak proper english *rofl*). anyway, i love stephen :). eloquence makes men look sexy :D :D :D. (although he's VERY good looking, anyway!)
