Its not 100 % correct that you cant sense radiation.

In fact, you can sense ionizing radiation pretty much instantaneously if the levels are just high enough.

In that case it leaves a strong metallic taste on your tongue which is due to a chemical reaction inside your taste buds caused by the radiation passing through your head.

This chemical reaction is similar to the more delayed one happening in the brain which ultimately triggers the process of vomiting as part of radiation sickness

There are a lot of variables. Air burst, ground burst, prevailing winds, distance from ground zero, etc.... It is totally reasonable to say that one could survive a limited nuclear attack given the proper luck. Of course, in an all out strike, not much of a chance there. Our biggest worry now is a terrorist with a smaller nuke. You'd stand a better chance of being safe due to distance but, there would be virtually no warning.

Actually, this is a hell of a lot better than nothing. Fallout produces primarily Alpha and Beta radiation, not Gamma. These are free electrons and hydrogen nuclei. They don't penetrate concrete, wood etc. Rather, the exposure danger comes from dust which is inhaled or ingested, giving access to vulnerable organ tissue. Just filtering out most dust would increase a person's survival chances quite a bit. Of course, if you're a mile from a blast, blast damage and Gamma rads will kill you quickly.
