Hi Jack, I love your videos. When you put the 2 pc of block together you said you used permatex is there a special type best to use? Also i have 2 differant blocks i noticed the one you used has the rubber gromeits over the studs thats like a V shape on the outside one of mine cases is like that but 1 is missing do you know if that comes with the gasket set or where can i get them. The other case is not like this is this normal.

    Thanks for any help

    Tom

  • @handytb I use Form-A-Gasket sealant on the case. Permatex and NAPA also sells it under their brand.

    Good vid thanks

  • i was wondering what kind of VW engine is this? I want to build an engine for an old super beetle but i hardly understand anything about that good old fashioned German Engineering (Due to the fact i was born into a Chevy family). So what kind of engine and parts am i going to have to buy in order to get my Super Beetle running with little civics and other imports. Im 17 but ive already done my first build with a little help. Will this project be too much for me by myself?

  • must you remove the flywheel and pulley before spltting the engine case??

    thanks!

    chris

  • hi, im splitting my engine....

do i need to remove the flywheel and/or pulley before splitting it or can i leave them both on???

    thanks, chris

  • hi sir, im attempting to slit my engine case....

i removed heads and all bolts etc and would greatly apppreciate your advanced vw knowledge by telling me if i have to remove to flywheel and drive pulley before splitting it in two..??

or can i just split it by leaving the flywheel and pulley still on the crankshaft??

    thanks!

    chris

  • Chris, Its easyer if you remove them now. behind it. There is also one bolt you may not see below and in back of #1 cylinder it gets covered with dirt, look closely.

  • hey, thanks i managed to split the engine block but have not removed the cylinder heads yet...i removed those circular pins (two per head) but i have not succedded in removing it from the connecting rod....

hope you can help me here (again lol)

    thnaks!

    chris

  • damn, now my piston rings are jammed, they wont move!!

  • WOMEN!

  • it was very surprise when i know that its engen block can be burn like a light it can be used like a torch

  • Awesome.

Especially the bit about going out on the town with you wife!

    Cant wait for more.

  • are these blocks iron or aluminium?

  • part aluminium and Magnesium

the new ones they sell now are aluminium.

  • hey guys, i was wondering if you can help me out with my engine problem. When I turn the flywheel, the distributor drive shaft doesnt rotate. does this mean its out of place, eroded down??

    any help would be apreciated

    tnks

  • Is your distributor in the engine?

The shaft may ride up and away from the crank gear if the dist. is out and it won't turn.

  • the distributor isnt in the engine, when I inserted (with cylinder 1 at TDC) its slotted in perfectly but the rotor arm or the whole shaft simply wont turn. It doesnt ride up either....doesnt move at all...

    thanks

  • the distributor isnt in the engine, when I inserted (with cylinder 1 at TDC) its slotted in perfectly but the rotor arm or the whole shaft simply wont turn. It doesnt ride up either....doesnt move at all...

    thanks

  • Put your distributor in and see what happens. The dist. must sit all the way down on the block. If it don't sit all the way down the drive shaft is not seated in all the way. Maybe your washers moved and is not letting the drive shaft go all the way down to engage the gear.

  • yes, sir thats the exact problem! the distributor doesnt go as far as it should so the dist drive shaft is not engaging the gear. The drive shaft is too high and i need to push it back down (with a mallet) so that the teeth engage eachother. The only problem is that im not sure about the timing ie: so that the teeth lie above eachother and i can hit the shaft downwards to engage them. how is this possible?

    thanks loads.

  • The shaft is probably hung up on the washers that it rides on. Remove the shaft and with a long screwdriver align the washers so all of they are lined up with the hole, then drop the shaft in. you may have to turn the shaft a little with a screwdriver till it drops in. DO NOT force it in.

  • thanks! any idea how to remove it without a specific tool?

    you are really helpfull, tnks

  • you can take a screwdriver slightly larger then the hole in the center of the gear and lightly tap it into the V part of the gear and lightly move it back and forth while pulling up lightly.

  • Hi Great videos,

I have a 64 split, the engines great but if I have to do any work I shall be firing up these videos,

    Thanks again. Andy, uk.

  • Maybe some driveline hook-ups or body work. Or maybe Bug frame-off resto. Frame-off restoration is a pretty big project, but it wouldbe awesome to see how it's done

    VW Bus renovation.

  • Great video !!!!!

    could you post more?!?!?

  • Now thats a better comment.

I will be doing more projects this summer, anything special you would like to see about VWs?

    Jack

  • can anyone help me with this? i'm rebuilding a 71 dual port , and the case i have after i got it glass beaded to clean it up has a bit of pitting on the crank bearings. is there some way to fill this?

  • Wow I missded this one.

No, use new bearings, they are the heart of the engine.

  • yes! thats really helpfull, thanks alot!

ill try remove the shaft now and examine it.

    :) thanks

  • Really helpful video! How much was the total cost for all the parts, and which parts did you have to get brand new?

  • I didn't keep track of the cost. I know the engine case cost the most of all the parts. Everything was new except the heads, I redid them myself.

  • great video!! special thank you from austria.

  • Parabéns pela aula!

  • This guy is great,,,,finally someone real..

  • At about the 2 minute mark. "What's wrong with this picture?"

You mounted the right side of the case to the motor stand. Left side has the studs in it. I did the same thing earlier this week.

I'm really enjoying your videos, thanks.

  • LOL, Frank your the only one to guess that. Good luck with your build.

    jack

  • I didn't realize the answer was going to be provided at the end. I paused it and added the comment and felt embarrassed afterward.

Thanks again for the videos I've watched the whole series.

  • your wife is lucky to have you man...good work

  • Either you are hercules or that engine is insanely light weight.

  • a VW engine for the beetle weights only 100kg, which is half of the weight of regular cars.

  • Just getting ready to put mine together,Been 28 yrs since i built the one in my bug now.Have ove 436 thousand miles on it and counting.Just bought a German crank i found on ebay,it has been sitting in a parts dept for 36 yrs.Its brand new and still had protecting coating on it,what was left. Now all of my parts will be German and not that garbage from south of the boarder.

  • LOL! Great videos ... loved the bit about your wife making you go to the store! :-D Classic facial expression!!
