How did Martin Luther come to understand justification?

I clearly understand why Jesus said that people would try to take the Kingdom by violence. He understood that people would accept just about anything and any doctrine to consider themselves saved, except the doctrine of "Ye must be born again." The only test of salvation is the new birth.
