It was never planned to be six weeks. They wanted it to last 52 weeks but the BBC initially only wanted 4, soon upped to 13. During the making of those they asked for another 13 and it just continued from there...

I know - @ 3:24 the 1970-1973 bit refers to when the title sequence was used, later @ 3:56 there is another image for Pertwee's second title sequence, which says 1973-1974. I also did this for Tom Baker (@ 4:06 and 5:02 ).
