When we talk about our society here in the UK being fucked up (which parts of it are), we don't have situations where whole families are addicted to something like heroin or opium surely? Marijuana, on paper is a less deadly drug because not as much people smoke it, therefore the number of addicts (and yes, it becomes addictive after awhile of smoking). Opium, however, is worse than both. One of the reasons China turned to Communism was due to the fact that 40% of the population was addicted and stoned off there mind. Disgusting! Cigarettes don't have these affects. Marijuana neither to the extent of Opium.

Heroin is a deadly substance. Opium is deadly only in massive doses. Of course National Geographic documentaries would probably refer to ganja as a narcotic. And from a pharmacological standpoint, alcohol is a neurotoxin (kills brain cells). Opium isn't. It's not our place to force our societal preferences on them. Unfortunately, they are misused and people such as the ones you just witnessed above have been sucked into its tricks. Opium and Marijuana are not very easy to overdose and die on, and only Opium is physically addictive if used often.
