Great Video ! And now you viewer don´t need to go all the way to black belt to defend youself properly and learn groundfighting... ! Once you get on top GTFO....! No kimuras, chokes and Bullcrap. Blue belt is enough for street...but as an sport and if you get hooked...you forget the praticallity of BJJ and go for sport crazy moves. BJJ is great...but come one...Journet to last level in Blue belt is all you need to be proefficient in Ground fight...not ADCC expert but to handle yourself in fight
novice here and I want to ask a less inteligent question....doesnt rolling, fighting on your back, transitioning or shooting or any other of bjj ground techniques incapacitate your arms, shoulders, back or knees on the street as concrete is a pretty unforgiving surface and how do you face that , can you actually condition you body for that..
@300zxl The combat part isn't really effective against multiple people but the mentality it gives you during a fight and being able to stay calm and think of the best possible defense it will definatly help in that situation I can tell you from experience
this is great stuff- i am shodan in Aiki-Jitsu / Aikido tai Jitsu, have a background in Wrestling, Shorin Ryu Karate, Taikwon Do, Escrima, Tai Boxing, Judo and BJJ- love it all ;) great instruction ;)
I really like the fact that you practice on the concrete. Nothing too heavy as to induce injury; realistic enough to give you the experience of having 'been there before'. Looking forward to more of your wisdom, Mr. Kesting. Osu!
@WoWkiddymage Damn right! Everyone I know who trains at a respectable BJJ academy like I do says they're told the same thing - 'if you have the opportunity stand up and base'. The only time you'll see someone pulling guard is mostly in competitions nowadays, and that's also mostly by people who aren't good wrestlers. I LOVE BJJ, but in RL if you think sitting on the ground and WAITING for the guy to pummel you is smart in a fight, you're most likely the 'GET IN MY GUARD' type. Stand up or sweep.
I have the same shoes as him! I got them because they were so flexible and I liked it because I raise my rear foot on the ball of my foot when I'm in my fighting stance at the gym I go to, and I felt that these would be awesome if I ever got into a fight because they conform to your feet as you bend your toes and stuff.
Result: Never got into a fight, ever, ever, ever. -_-
I know he's not really throwing proper punches there just to demonstrate, but is it just me or does that guy punch like he's trying to hit yu with his thumb?
Ok Stephan you just need to make a Self Defense CD. This has to be the most neglected aspect of BJJ. I feel just a lil ashamed that I am a bluebelt and dont know all of this cold.
@snamone God forbid anyone think I'm trying to force gracie jiu jitsu on you, but try checking out the gracie combatives. It's all jiu jitsu for self defense. With frequent practice, you can learn it in 6 or 7 months. I'd say it took me about 12 or 13 to have them completely down, for the most part.
@clipophile thanks for the info your the first person who has said something good about Gracie combatives. I will definitely check into it, thanks for the info. I don't care what anyone says or thinks about the Gracies, without them their would be no Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
@perfectshot77 Maybe if you start singing your favorite Ace of Base songs you'll freak them out because they don't want your 90's gay HIV blood on them. Know how I know you're gay? Oh right, you like Coldplay.
@StephanKesting Great Video Stephan. I like the series on the Non-sport side of BJJ. Too many schools of martial arts teach you how to react to trained opponents. But in real life, there are just way too many "what if's" and there's no ref around to make sure it's a fair fight. These are simple and easy to apply. Makes it easy to learn and escape from a dangerous situation.
@tdparisi thats what the gracie academy is all about. The most important neglected are in bjj is defense against strikes both standing and on the bottom and escapes afterward. Its mind boggling that hardly any schools spar with strikes and drill with strikes, how is grappling without strikes with someone doing grappling moves self defense? All lads on the street do is head hunt with strikes and nobody even trains for it in bjj,its a joke.
@billysue2 it's very true, some schools of martial arts just don't look at the most common types of attacks. At the same time, many schools don't differentiate between street fighting and self defense. Self defense is usually a surprise attack. fights are usually provoked. the opening attacks are varied, depending on the situation. Of course one can turn into the other, but they often start with very different attacks and situations.
@tdparisi all fights are self defense unless its mutually agreed combat(which is illegal on both parts)If you feel in danger of being assaulted, thats self defense, its not always surprise.I havent been in a fight since the army ,that time if you were timid youd be bullied so you had to fight in that environment, its like prison in that sense. In civilian life that situation is avoidable with some self control so all fights should be totally self defense.
@billysue2 I was trying to differentiate between situations that can escalate (or if you're smart, de-escalate) like a fight at a bar, and situations that are more spontaneous, like muggings and sexual assaults. Sure it's possible to spot both but situation 1 will likely land you in jail. That's usually where you find the head hunters as you described. The other situation usually starts with a grab or tackle to establish physical and mental dominance. Then there's weapons. that's another story.
@perfectshot77 Brilliant thinking, you may be on to something. If I'm being choked I'll usually try to find two stones and grind them against one another till one is sharp enough to stab my attacker, but your way is much more versatile.
@perfectshot77 Ha ha ha. I have never thought of that lol. You shouldn't say those things on youtube because some idiots might try it...Hang on brb I am gonna try that tomorrow. I'll let you know. That's still some incridible hulk shit.
Is there differences in techniques between hard surface like on the street and training mats? Will there be techniques that you don't want to do because the ground is too hard?
@jaynunchuck a fight is always going to change based on your environment. The techniques won't vary too much as will the strategy. What's better is to learn how to change a technique so it will work in a new environment. Just think about each one as you learn it. Other things to look for in your environment in a self defense situation: is there something you can use as a weapon or protective barrier? are you against a hard wall or open space? Is there an exit? is there someone who can help?
You people need to get a grip. Sometimes you DONT HAVE A CHOICE. You can end up on the ground, and you better know what to do when you get there. Its funny, but all the "self defense" experts on youtube always appear to be clueless internet warriors.
Nice technique however, horribly wrong never go to the ground, I'm a Judoka It'll be extremely hard to get me to the ground and if I do fall I know my Ne-Waza I'm combat based. Also It's horrible that all BJJ establishes is to stay on the ground. Get back up on your feet!!! If he's got a knife your done, he's not gonna aim at your shoe's sole. This is in all due respect horrible advice.
@Jonobos Read the description on my profile, You're also welcomed at our Dojo to learn real self defense armed and unarmed. You never go to the ground especially on the streets. I'm A Sandan. -Kind Regards-
@chavamma His advice wasn't to go to the ground it was what to do IF you end up on the ground. You're very arrogant to think you're not going to end up on the ground. Someone might land a lucky shot on your jaw or temple and poof before you know it you're on the ground in a daze. As for you saying that BJJ says you stay on the ground thats completely wrong. Watch his first videos were he recommends that you reverse right away. You can then either mount or just get up again.
@JohnnyBoyCali Yes & you are? Im a Sandan Come to my Dojo in Texas And I'll gladly explain certain aspects that are wrong when you name "Self Defense." -Kind Regards-
What if there is gravel or broken glass? If there was none, it seems like it would be painful to move on the back like that. What if you're in a hallway with limited space? Would an individual just back up and kick or stay and kick or try to get up?
This is really, really awesome. You always do a great job of explaining BJJ. The only question I have is why do you make the videos so short? Youtube allows up to 10 minutes. I would be curious how you would defend from stomps and kicks to the face while down. I've seen a lot of street fights and never once has someone jumped into someones guard. Usually the guy on the bottom starts getting stomped and kicked.

when rocking, it is important to keep your legs wide open, thus preventing him from coming to side control as your legs are in the way.
