i was fortunate enought to be one of those young ones in the audience at the LA Forum back when they performed this just off their vinyl record... i swear they must be from another time and space to have achieved such musical beauty and insight... topographic oceans was a revelation for me back then at 14 and still is today at 53 years old...
I saw them when Dream Theater opened for them in 2001 when I was 10.... At the time I thought they were boring...... 10 years later, I own every Yes album..... What the hell was I thinking back then...
@VeganWTF that was the show I went to! Yep.. It's a shame I treated that show the way I did. Had no idea what I was witnessing. I didn't say they were shitty at the show though.. I think I just bitched and moaned saying I wanted to leave but my parents wanted to stay.
Yeah I tend to agree with you there. A lot of people seem to like one or the other. I'm a prog fan in general.. Both are 2 different kinds of prog. Yes are just geniuses for their time and still are. You need to like Yes' sound.
Does anyone remember the FIRST major rock festival near to where its held now?
If ya do, treaure the memory brother or sister!
It was held at the [now] Bath & West showground just south of Shepton Mallet and I was MUCH younger than Iam now.........Ohh, those sweet memories! [If you are young, don't worry! - You'll have your very OWN memories for later in life!
Pop Up Video: Alan White played with John Lennon who fell in love with Yoko Ono and they met at an art show where Yoko had posted a little note that said "Yes" at the top of a ladder.
looks like filmed in somebody's basement. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Still. The classic line up. Apart from the other classic line up with Brufford. Not a great hair-cut choice for Chris - - I thought for a minute "Wilson Phillips"
Awesome how Steve Howe does that around 2:20-ish....cutting in with that guitar part over a completely different riff, then the rest join in with him. I'm sure there's a musical term for that. It sounds great on the album, but live is a totally different thing.
i was watching from the back and you should have seen the bald spots in the audience!
Yes are and were astounding, i used to save up my pocket money so i had cash put aside to buy whatever they released (until Relayer they lost me after that)
I was the biggest yes fan and could draw a proper 'yes' with my eyes shut...i had a yes's all over my satchel and rough book ...but.....
..with limited time and stomping to be had at the glade stage i turned by back on this bunch of old fellas :)
coño tu no me digas. I'm obsessed w/ the whole music festival scene and now I discover that none other than YES participated at such an event?!?!?! WHYHAHA DO I MISS THESE THINGS. I never thought it possible that they'd perform at a music festival. hot damn, that lucky crowd. and what a song to unleash--hehe are you ready Steve LOL. a week ago they wrote it, OH, why how amazing..LOL
this is the definative yes line-up and sounds great and it was only 5 years ago. I wonder they have played this? They are all 30 years older - 5 years more now
@unclvic It was at the Glastonbury Festival 2003 on a Sunday-the last of three days. They were late coming on (about 30 minutes-at 3:30 PM.) on the Jazz (?!) Stage. it's in Southern england-Avalon. it's reknowned as the best festival in the World and it is. They had never played there before either. The weather was perfect too,I know, i was there.

@StatenIslandisBoring Were you at Jones Beach Theater?
Yeah, it seems many DT fans dont' think much of Yes.
I remember hearing someone sitting behind me saying that Yes is a shitty band or something.
I started out as a Yes fan in 1975. I listen to dream theater and I don't find it appealing to me.

agreed, it's probably my favorite part of the song.

Sometimes we hit a groove and it's as fresh as the first time.
I've played bass for awhile but I can't imagine being able to stand there and play this kind of music with guys like these.
Makes me smile just contemplating doing that!
I'd have loved to be at that Glastonbury festival.

Is there any video with th eoriginal drums in the slow part after the intro?
They always do the drums different.. But the original studio CANT be beat
KMatteKudasaiC 2 years ago
Look for a version with Bill Brufurd playing drums, He is the original drummer on the studio album. Alan White plays a different style.

This is one of the best progressive rock bands to ever exist.
Anderson is a great vocalist and the writing is so god damn amazing. It gives me chill every time i heard this epic song.
