After Sugihara left the Shorinji Kempo group he entered many Kyokushin karate tournaments. Sugihara is known as the "fighting Kancho." He fought several Jissen Kumite championships while in his late 30's and early 40's. All you have to do is go to his Hombu Dojo to find the truth.
@blugularis is very similar, but it's the only jissen karate that is not an offshot of kyokushin, even if their competition has a strong influence from it.
Byakuren is indeed a offshot from shorinji kempo, but it has been heavily influenced by kyokushin.
Today it is much closer in both technique, movement patterns and tactics to kyokushin than to shorinji kempo.
Similar rules breed similar fighting style, and byakuren rules are more or less straihgt copies of kyokushin rules. Not to mention that there are a lot of cooperation between the two styles.
i red that sugihara made part of the doshin so best students. however after the death of the foundator, shorinji became more and more a "soft" or non deadly discipline, with the daughter of doshin so. that's why sugihara wanted to develop is own style
looks much like Enshin karate or Ashihara
