@DrHowlingMad It stands for Drum Corps International. its basically like organized competitions between Drum and Bugle Corps. for example Blue Devils, SCV, Blue Stars, Blue Knights, Velvet Knights etc. etc. all have drumlines that play with basslines snarelines, tenorline and whatever. just look them up. its better to watch than explain
@bigtarget9 Dont ever put Joe Morello and Travis Parker in the same sentence......travis parker is the (lil wayne/ justin beiber) of drums......
has too many dick riders that dont know real music and skill...it insults true drummers...
as for the dislikes in this vid (theyre all travis parker fans) lol or they think he's the best. because he did a soldier boy cover???.....please.. learn some chops... and off beats..
@Ov3rDoSis im a travis barker fan (mainly because of what he did with the aquabats and his early work in blink), and yes i dislike the fact hes hangg around with wannabe rappers etc. But i aspire to Buddy Rich but i dont like the fact he was an asshole to his band and in general until he got older and relaxed a bit. Does my head in when complete bellends like yourself 1, knock another musician and 2, make ridiculous assumptions about people that like them. youre as bad as the fanboys.
@Blink182DudeRanch Travis Barker is overrated as a drummer. He is far too often put into groups with drummers like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and apparently Mr. Morello here. He's an alright drummer, not a god. Nor does he even play Jazz drums...
Bad technique....but when you think about it, it doesn't even matter. Joe Morello is how old and plays like that? Amazing, simply amazing. A true, passionate drummer.
At 0:35, Joe plays the paradiddle with accents on the counts, as in RlrrLrllRlrrLrll. I have trouble NOT playing the accents when I play the paradiddle uptempo. Does anyone have any tips to help smooth out those paradiddles?
@colourfulwithaU Just play them slowly and work your way up. When your able to play them that way very slowly then you can try it a little faster, it all comes with patience.
@colourfulwithaU What fjanor said... slow it down, and master it at a slow tempo until the rhythm becomes automatic in your head. As your mind and muscles get used to the pattern and you can play a little faster without forcing it, lots of practice (I know this sounds grueling but I've been playing twenty years... practice pays off!) and you'll whip through it without even thinking. The reason he's accenting on the counts is twofold... (cont'd)
@colourfulwithaU (cont'd) Morello is accenting on the counts because he's using a variation of Moeller method. Think of each side of the paradiddle as two one strokes followed by a two stroke. ALL the momentum for one RLRR or LRLL is packed into the first downstroke. From there it's just a matter of mastering control of the LL/RR two-strokes. This lets gravity do half the work for you and your only job is to control the rebound. Again, just slow it down and work work work at it. It'll come.
Why do you punks have to always bring up Travis Barker. He has nothing on Joe Morello. This guy is one of the best of all time. Travis Barker is a zit on Joe Morello's ass.
I think Travis and Joey are both good drummers. They are overrated, but they don't suck completely. Just my thoughts on that. And my percussion instructor took lessons with Joe. He said he was THE best drummer he had ever seen.
i would have given my left nut for just ONE private lesson from Mr. Morello. what a legend, and what a class act. R.I.P, Joe.
PS - who are the 19 dickheads who "disliked" this video?! you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. if you stopped sucking Travis Barker's and/or Joey Jordison's cock for 30 seconds, you'd see wha goddamn NITWITS you are!!
Joe Morello was such a musically sensitive drummer. Very creative with a light touch. Peter Erskine called him a poet on the drums. Hey guys, check out my tributes to Buddy Rich on here. I'm not a professional drummer but I've been developing my chops over the years. Always looking for helpful feedback. :-)
Probably not the first person to try this, but the Morello book works really good with the feet as well. Master Studies is alot of fun! Thank you Joe. R.I.P
Joe was the best. I met him and got to tell him how much I admired his playing and what a huge inspiration he was to me. He was very appreciative - a real nice guy and the last of the great ones to leave us.
I was lucky enough to have a teacher when I was a kid who studied with Joe and this is the kind of "simple" exercise he used to compile and wow did they help technique. Simple enough to play slow but I could never come near the speed or cleanliness of sound Joe (or my teacher!!) could - RIPping Paraddidles heaven Joe - you deserve your place there for your contribution here!
Great to see old school cats like Morello laying it down! Guy's like Buddy Rich were light years ahead of not only what was going on at the time, but could play circles around most drummers today! By most, I mean drummers that are famous because of their craft, not because they're in a famous 'Pop Band', those guy's...forget about it!
Almost EVERY SINGLE FREAKING VIDEO about a classic drummer like this guy has at least one (in this case, there's two) highest rated comment mentioning Travis. I find it interesting that you guys seem so obsessed about someone you hate so much.
@Repulsorman. Somehow you think Im ignorant because I cant play the excercise like the late great JM??? I would not be the only drummer around who cant. If you so smokin' put a clip up of you doing. else STFU
I use his methods in my teaching. He is often overlooked by some but check his solo on Castillian Drums. Brubeck played at Carnegie Hall in 1963 (or 64?). Morello was sick (flu or cold) and played an absolutely stunning solo. If you listen this solo you hear a lot of influences that John Bonham would use years later. Joe's stick technique is really worth studying. It helped my playing a lot. Thanks Joe!!! R.I.P.
@4against1 I dont think that Travis barker should be the mentioned near Joe morello R.I.P.. Travis barker and joey jordison can even Get to Joe morello's shoes.. True drumming isn't speed and hitting hard.. Its about making true art.. to be a drummer you dont even have to get a kit with 50 cymbals and 100 drums like a lot of drummers do which is pretty pointless if you wanna be a drummer.. People think that true drumming comes from speed. If you think that then you are a no drummer.
@TheForeverDrums Dude, I agree with everything you say exept that you say Travis barker and Joey Jordison are even.. Those 2 are TOTALLY different drummers. Joey has also won the prize for best drummer multiply times. But I do agree, drumming is not all about speed.
@TheForeverDrums What about Neil Peart? He has a massive drum set, and he uses every cymbal. Are you telling me he isnt a drummer? i know what your saying tho, and i totaly agree with you.
@TheForeverDrums LOL I don't get this, every time i see a great jazz drummer on you tube Travis Barker gets mentioned EVERY TIME ( not in a positive way) surley this more than anything is testament to TB's great success as a drummer. Im a massive Joe Morello fan but this doesn't mean I dissmis drummers from other genres Travis has incredible technique too, just cause he's famous as blink's drummer does not mean that is all he can play.
@TheForeverDrums Dude you talk a lot of sense. Joey is a twat. All poser and a right show-off. I will tell you this Travis studied with a jazz teacher and his kit is setup like a jazz kit. Well certainly the angle t which he has the snarew drum set up reminisant of the jazzers from way back in time.
@thegreatbasher That doesn't matter if he has like a jazz kit and studied jazz. He doesn't play it now, He plays Fast 16th notes and infact he isn't that fast. also, he does basic beats that almost every drummer can do And he doesn't have creativity. im not bashing travis, He's a good drummer but if he started playing drums at a young age, I'd expect really really really really MUUCH more from him not doing basic stuff and none creativity.
@TheForeverDrums Well how can you say that you aren't bashing Travis when you say that he should have progressed and developed a lot more from when he was a kid learning. He does what he does and is bloody good at it! He expresses himslef on the drumkit, what more do you want from hi? I'm getting sick of people always bashing Travis and tearing him down because you jerks can't accept that he is not in your little minds a super mega star. He has lalent so shut your mouths and move on!!
@TheForeverDrums Drumming is about having fun and making music. If it means drumming fast then drum fast. Stop being a bitchy old man. Your rock and roll dreams are over. Trolling the younger crowd won't bring it back.
@TheForeverDrums I don't think any drummer can be like Joe I would like to see another drummer got to 96-86 and still practise the strokes and technique R.I.P Joe
Finally a true Master !!!!!! I have been playing drums 20 years and I haven't seen or listened to anybody like this Man " I know he is in Heaven !!!!! God Bless "
I went to the First 'Annual' (and only) Capital City Jazz Festival in Raleigh about Oct-Nov 1958 when The Brubeck Quartet appeared with 'The Four Freshmen' and 'Sonny Rollins Trio' and 'Maynard Ferguson's Big Band. There might have been a thousand of us in the Cow Palace, but it was an afternoon to remember for this high school senior and his honey. You were my idol, Joe! RIP, Mr. Hip!
@onedouble1 Then I must be a fellow immortal because I can easily perform them that fast. And that's not me being arrogant. That's just you being ignorant.
It's hilarious how I always see people arguing over stupidity on here!! Barker and Jordison would NEVER admit to being "better" than Morello or Buddy Rich or Krupa! Guys who think that drumming is about competition or speed or flash NEVER get a gig! The simple fact is: guys who can play in time while playing time are the ones who always do. You guys should check out people like Keltner, Blaine,Andy Newmark, Jim Gordon, Jeff friggin Porcaro! These are the guys who can play ANYTHING!
I'm not the drummer in the family & will confess to not knowing who Barker or Jordison are. I do know Jeff Porcaro (RIP). I'm into guys like Tony Williams (RIP), Art Blakey (RIP), Peter Erskine, & Will Kennedy because I don't just hear another technician. Same w/ Dave DiCenso. The skillset is there, but it's the originality that they're bringing to the table that I'm gravitating towards. When I saw some of the stuff Joe was doing in the early 60's, I was blown away.
I'm a bassist and a guitarist, but the concepts he's applying here are fascinating. I learned more as a bass player from interacting with my drummer than I did from any book. Musicality is only one part of musicianship. Rhythm, improvisation and dexterity are pretty damned important too.
no no no no...there must be some freakin magic in his hands i mean....wtf?!?!?! i practise paradidles every single day but i'm not even close to what i just saw!!!!....
@realdrummer112 i know your not jeff, but you sound like an obnoxious self righteous ass just like him. joe morello is a LEGEND, and if this fact escapes you then you need to find i different hobby.
@ArtofRi0t yes, and it's not easy. at least not to play as fast and smooth as mr morrello. iv'e been working on it for about a year or so. I can do it without the doubles at about 160bpm. with the doubles i'd say around 140bpm. my singles are at about 210bpm.
Yes, all the time. Believe it or not, after about three minutes of this non-stop at a solid temp, you WILL feel the burn. Joe's the man. One of my all time favorites.
i was like look at this old guy trying to teach drums until 0:33 thumbs up if that shocked you too

If you dislike Joe Morello you are an idiot. His solo in "Take 5" is nasty. The song is in five... for the cats that don't know. Go check it.

@1shnookste
RIP, Joe.

I like to know how you develop your right hand for the attack and bounce back for the swing beats on the ride.

I'm a bassist and a guitarist, but the concepts he's applying here are fascinating. I learned more as a bass player from interacting with my drummer than I did from any book. Musicality is only one part of musicianship. Rhythm, improvisation and dexterity are pretty damned important too.

RepulsorMan 10 months ago
@ArtofRi0t yes, and it's not easy. at least not to play as fast and smooth as mr morrello. iv'e been working on it for about a year or so. I can do it without the doubles at about 160bpm. with the doubles i'd say around 140bpm. my singles are at about 210bpm.
digitaldown 10 months ago
Yes, all the time. Believe it or not, after about three minutes of this non-stop at a solid temp, you WILL feel the burn. Joe's the man. One of my all time favorites.
spacitydrummer4JC 10 months ago
@ArtofRi0t I use it now and again, it really is killer. Hardest part is definitely going from 16th notes to doubles. RIP Joe

The guy is legend!! I really doubt if anyone will even know who Barker or Jordison are in 40 or 50 years.
