yes thats true, but we as humans are producing so much thats becoming a hazard to the greenhouse effects on earth because not enough heat from the sun is exiting our atmosphere, causing global warming because of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
Yeah, there's just SOOO much CO2 we're producing, hey! As a percentage of the atmosphere it's gone up to a whopping 0.038%!! And it absorbs radiation from within the HUGE range of 13.9-14.5 nanometres, 2/3 of which is already saturated by water!! What ever will we do?
Nice spin job my friend. The % of co2 in the atmosphere is 0.038%. As you no doubt know 99.9% of the atmosphere absorbs no radiation. The TRACE gases do all the heavy lifting. And the ones which we influence are ALL increasing. C02 content is currently 387 parts per milllion. Up from 280 parts per million prior to the industrial revolution. And it also should be noted higher than it has been for more than 600,000 years. But you have no worries? I am amazed.
As I already implied, water vapour is a greenhouse gas. It makes up ~1% of the atmosphere, and up to 4% at the surface (where almost all reabsorption takes place). So anyone who can subtract can see that your claim that "99.9% of the atmosphere absorbs no radiation" is a lie.
0.038% is an effectively unprecedented figure, but a negligible one. There's 100x as much H2O. If it's reabsorbing almost all the radiation, it doesn't matter how much CO2 there is -- there's nothing left to do.
Ah good point about the water vapor Sir. Although your larger point is wrong. And claiming that I am lying is mean spirited. You quote a correct figure of 0.038% for CO2 but don't note that it is a figure for DRY atmosphere. Percentages for the atmosphere are always listed this way for the obvious reason that water vapor or humidity is VARIABLE. As such listing the % or ppm for wet atmosphere would be NEEDLESSLY confusing. Please lets not call one another liars.
The larger point with regard to IR radiation is whether CO2 does in fact contribute to warming or regulation of planetary climate. Back in the days of John Tyndal it was thought that CO2 and H2O did overlap absorption spectrums. But more recently our ability to measure these things has grown more subtle so that it is known that the increase of CO2 does matter. And again water vapor is an automatic feedback. Increased heat yeilds increased water vapor which yeilds more vapor.
You want to dismiss the efficacy of water vapour because it's variable? Look, at its very lowest concentrations, in a local area, it's STILL higher than CO2 levels. So if you think that water vapour is negligible there's no way that CO2 can be.
So what if I quoted the %of CO2 for a dry atmosphere? If I gave it for a wet one it would be smaller. So I was helping you.
Of course not. Water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas. My point is twofold. The concentration of water vapor is influenced by other trace gases which we do influence. And that makes all the diference.
My other point that it is common to take water content of the atmosphere as a given. hence my saying 99.9%. Poor communication on my part. But certainly not a wilfull attempt to lie or decieve. I have never seen anyone ever talk of trace gases except in terms of 'dry' air.
I did talk of trace gases in terms of 'dry' air, and you disparaged me for it.
Your first paragraph referred to positive feedback again, which is just an absurd notion. The earth has gone through warm periods before, which not only increased the level of water vapour but, as the ice core record shows, the level of CO2 also. Now if there's a positive feedback mechanism in place, how do you figure that the planet ever managed to cool down after such periods?
Okay, positive feedback. If it existed, the Earth would've burnt to a crisp long ago. If heat yields vapour yields heat yields vapour, how could the planet have ever cooled down after hot periods? NASA's Aqua satellite has recently proven the iris hypothesis, showing that increased water vapour from temperature increase actually COOLS DOWN the planet.
And like I said, CO2 can only absorb radiation within the 13.9-14.5nm band. There is very little it can do.
All the feed-backs in any atmosphere are fundamentally bound. How so?
Stefan-Boltzmann Law:
Energy (heat) radiated by a black-body is proportional to the fourth power of the absolute temperature (Kelvin or Rankine degrees if you wish).
As to this satellite are you saying that NASA is saying that additional water vapor has the opposite effect of the warming influence you stipulated for water vapor already in the air? That would be a surprise. Did they say clouds? I'll check it out.
You've just described the Stefan-Boltzmann Law without actually linking it to this discussion. Great, now people know what's happening when energy is absorbed and re-radiated. What's your point -- you haven't addressed the problem that there is very little available energy for CO2 to absorb in the first place (that 0.6nm band again). And though you've described feedback you've described a NEGATIVE one. And that's setting aside the fact that CO2 is invisible and thus far from a black body.
hayesism correct me if I am wrong, but when you say "0.6 nm" you mean 0.6 nanometers? I ask because that is in the X-ray range. In other words completely besides the point for the issue at hand. The relevant wave lengths with respect to the earths climate are between 0.1 and 100 micrometers. That is UV, visible, & Infra-red light. You seem to be confused. The point of talking about black bodies is that it is typical to show black body curves on plots of Radiance versus wavelength.
Ah, yes I did mean nanometres, but that's wrong. My bad, I meant micrometres -- I totally cede your correction. Honest mistake.
However, the fact that a certain band is responsible for 90% of CO2 warming (not 90% of greenhouse warming) means little if CO2 has such small potential to warm anyway. In fact my point was that CO2 warming takes place within a thin band, so I see we're in agreement.
Haven't read that article, I'll check it out (dude, kinda old though).
Well, at least you believe the Earth is at least 10,000 years old. That puts you slightly ahead of the creationist retards, at least.

Well I don't know where you're getting your data from, but mine says that the last decade was the hottest in the last century and the decade before that was the second hottest. It says that last year was about the seventh hottest on record and that it was hotter than any last century.
When the rest of the world is tooled up industrially and economically to procure energy for free from the sun, wind, tides and geothermally (and who knows where else as innovation continues), if the US is still fueling itself by extracting oil from shale and burning coal, it will be consigned to oblivion. The world doesn't need that and nor do you. The UN has nothing to do with this.
I'm not an economist, but I don't think that you're going to climb out of your economic hole by using the same methods that got you in there.
If you look back over the last century or so, you will see that every time there was an economic crisis (post 30's depression, post WW2, post 1890's depression), it was complete about faces and massively gearing up the economy in whole new ways that saved the day. If it is managed intelligently, a green energy revolution will turn things around entirely.
Another thing to consider is that other nations are moving and the last thing the US (or Australia) needs is for other countries to get massively ahead, forcing us to have to buy technology off them in order to comply with new standards.
Typical NeoCon doesn't realize the "fucking idiot" was a return of the comment you made to me. You looked at my profile and I looked at yours. It's obvious that we don't agree on anything-so what. I haven't lived my life looking for approval from strangers. Again you don't look for facts, you look for what will reinforce your beliefs like the misquote of Obama's coal comment.I have studied population and the environment for 30 years and made my opinion based on what I learned and observe.
All of this is about economies of scale. What would it cost you per gallon to procure and refine oil for yourself? Hydrogen is abundant will be harvested cheaply if required. Heard about base load solar energy? It's coming. Don't you think that might be a green way to source power for plug in electric vehicles?
Well now we know how stupid statements have to get before you recognise them as such, you might also care to read your previous climate change denial comments and realise your own stupidity. You should stop behaving as if you've got some special insights or that you're somehow smarter than or above the rest of us. We are facing a planetary emergency and people taking your line not only make laughing stocks of themselves, but encourage polluters by giving them hope that they can continue.
The founder of the Weather Channel says he is suing on behalf of "30,000 scientists including 9000 PhD". He whines that ONLY Fox will have him on. I believe that GLOBAL WARMING is a reality, you don't, so be it. If I am on the 'right' side, good luck to whomever is living then, if you are and we have made huge changes to the way we consume and what fuels us, what fucking harm will have been done - nothing except some financially bankrupt Oil and Gas companies. You sir are the fucking idiot.
You keep believing facts that you get from the smart folks on Fox & Friends, Rush Limbaugh, Oil and Gas experts, etc. For me, I choose to listen to and believe scientists when it comes to climate change & human activities contribution to it. The growing world population and consumption is simply not sustainable and this is a fact. The animal and ocean comment is about our blind consumption and trashing of everything in our path without real regard.Sarcasm is beyond your capabilities I guess.

Well that seals it: plug-in electrics will be the way of the future because them thar greenies are going to push solar and that Obama is going to fall for it hook line and sinker. I'm investing in the power lead industry. We're going to need millions of miles of power leads for all of them plug in cars.
Yeah, we sure as hell don't need any of them new fangled plug in electric cars. How the hell are we going to find power leads long enough to get them from home to work or on our holidays. Hell if we have them thar hydrogen cell cars, we might drive clear offa the sides of the planet. God damn, I wish those greenies would think things through!
Even if you don't believe the enviromental and global warming hype about fossil fuels. Energy independence through alternative energy and efficency mandates still should be our top priority, for national security and our economy.
OMG you are SO RIGHT - what am I thinking? There are no solutions. We don't have any scientists or great minds who can do anything but the internal combustion engine running on fossil fuel. Thank you so much for helping me see the light! Yes sir, 6+ Billion people sucking up everything the earth produces can go on forever! 2 cars in every driveway, fuck the animals and the ocean - it's all about me me me. So thanks again!!
bush is not on my winning side either in fact I think the government in general has stepped way outside their bounds.. the government has been using fear to manipulate the people to their agenda for a long time Vietnam,Communism, Patriot Act, Global Warming
they have turned us against nations, ideas, and even ourselves. now they turn us against our own system of capitalism by turning us against the wealthy who by the way create American jobs and innovations that make our lives comfortable.
some of the scientists that opposed manmade warming were getting paid by the oil companies to say its not real, however virtually every scientist supporting manmade is getting paid by the government to say it is real. we are not talking about little nobody scientists that oppose manmade warming either we are talking about some of the foremost physicists and meteorological scientists in the world.. Harvard, MIT,and Yale professors heads of major scientific institutes
I do not have any political affiliation I'm going strictly off of the evidence. the earth has been warming and cooling since the dawn of time. for the last 100 years the media has been crying wolf that climate change met doomsday and not once has it ever been accurate. Al gore's evidence only proved that the earth was warming in the early 2000's nothing more.. the funny thing is now that we are seeing record low temperatures that now proves global warming.. think for yourselves!!!
Climate change is simply more complex than any other issue today. Climate change is a warning and that the new administration takes these issues is about time. Time to wake up and smell the ozone. If you can't wrap your arms around the fact that we are all in this world together, then live in "denial"...Glad to see it is a priority, as it affects the entire human race. It is simply, as Obama says in this video, "the time for delay is over."
The fact is Barack and Al Gore both know that this global warming hoax is a politically manufactured vehicle to carry out Marxist
ideas. If you dont believe it sit back and watch. They are laughing behind closed doors when you wave your Green Flag. Green is the new Red. Its just that simple.
Explained with English, does not use the energy the electricity generation, with earth's attraction electricity generation solves the invention which the Earth warms, does not use the innovation which all energies possibly generate electricity your government, must be the national person makes this innovation if you did not understand that I said anything I ask you to tell you the National intelligence Organization completes this innovation I do not spend money to give you tude character a661333
Actually, CSP focuses sunlight to heat a resevoir (from which steam gen is used) = unlimited BASELOAD power potential for less than nuclear or "clean" coal.
The most important presidential declaration of the last fifty years! The passage to a civilization free of the dirty, disease producing, abusive of the environment and bloody hydrocarbons (oil and coal). Let us build a civilization based on energy sources that are renewable, clean, healthy to the human body, environmentally friendly, free of potential ecological disaster and dangerous waste. Solar & wind energy meet such fundamental standards. YES, it can be done! With clarity & determination.
And just how do I propose that? By use of billions of mirrors that reflect just a small part of the sun back into space. That is called reducing negative albedo. However, most of that sunlight would be focused onto steam generators. Hence Concentrated Solar thermal Power or CSP. Ya, it can cause an enviro frenzy, but so what. They don't care about the clean energy/economic/prevent the icecaps from melting all the way - solution...
if the standard to earn the nobel prize is al gore's inconvenient truth then maybe they should.. the burden of proof is on you... where is the evidence thats my question.. and don't show me correlation graphs they prove nothing. If we used your gore's evidence we could prove that an increase in cell phone usage is causing the earth to warm up
If you guys (against GW) can prove that glaciers have not approached previous "die off" levels, then I'll be wrong. Methane hydrate is a natural gas ICE like stuff that can only exist under 500 or so feet? of cold ocean. I must point out that there is more of it than ALL the worlds supply of fossil fuels (big ocean). Mining it is tough (I guess the enviro's won't have that). Not if, but when the oceans heat up, all hell breaks loose. Our fault or not, it will happen unless we cool the planet!!!
are you kidding me the all powerful oil companies... you need to look at your all powerful politicians they are controlling the media how do you think they convinced all of the american puppets that the earth was coming to an end. the media loves climate change scares they have been warning of ice ages and fireballs since the 1930's
I wonder if you were complaining when your all-powerful President Bush successfully used the "all-powerful" media that WMD's existed in Iraq? Not to mention the list of abuses of power and disregard for the Constitution during the last 8 years that were left unchecked. You conservatives sure went ballistic during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
between AD 800 and 1300 the regions around the fjords of southern Greenland experienced a mild climate, with trees and herbaceous plants growing and livestock being farmed.[
This is the best news I heard in many years. It's great to see policians rise above the glutch of the all powerful fossil fuel industry. Its long passed time that industry gets cut down to the level it should be. They are sucking the life out of us and using thier power in media to try to convice us that they are right. Just look at how they fool some people commenting on this video.
Better tell corporate America and the nations in the EU who are taking steps to reduce their carbon output! Why don't you tell everyone who signed the Kyoto Protocol that they're all confused too? You really should step up and help save these misguided nations from following the scientific community. While you're at it, please correct the IPCC. With your help, maybe some Nobel Peace Prize winners will have to return their prizes! The scientists are operating on fantasy and you have the truth.
Really! (that noise) Ya, to those that ignorantly think that melting icecaps mean no harm... just keep importing oil and go down the economic spiral along with ocean anoxia! Ever heard of negative albedo, well the billions of mirrors (needed for Concentrated Solar thermal Power) could stop that AND stop the depresion!
So, mabey we are not to blame but are we supposed to act like dinos and do noth'n. Com'n naysayers, wake up and smell the methane!!!
This is music to my ears: at last, leader who can see that the solution for the the global economic downturn and the massive US expenditure on foreign oil is to take on climate change. With innovation, construction and implementation of new technologies and the requisite infrastructure, the world can move forward to a far more positive future.
Obama & Gore are either liars or fools. the planet warms & cools on it's own, with or without cars, light bulbs, or Cheryl crow wiping her ass with leaves. This issue is nothing but a vehicle for charlatans such as these to advance the scope and strength of government over people and their daily lives.
It's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind for America (and all other countries) to start WORKING WITH NATURE, rather than against her. There really isn't a choice ... and then the natural next step is that all countries work as one. Won't that be wonderful ... and according to a great American R Buckminster Fuller we can then have 10 billion billionaires aboard this beautiful small planet. Bring it on!
reach steady state. Water and land plants had a lot to do with making oxygen for us animals.
We generate carbon dioxide. Our cars and factories generate CO2. We can make a difference by planting trees making marshes to generate more oxygen. Planting trees and brush in southern Louisiana will help reduce the fury of the Next Hurricane Katrina.
It's the only non-greenhouse thing that is scalable to a degree which allows the entire world to enjoy a "Western" (which shouldn't be called that as it includes the Japanese) standard of living, except maybe nuclear. But SBSP doesn't leave radioactive waste.
i give any politician kudos for being able to talk through that freakin' noise!! can everyone please put away your slr's and use your cheap digitals for just a few minutes?!!

Do you REALLY understand it? Let us know if you do, and when you do, we'll be ready to parry off any excuse for global warming that you may have with logic. So next time, think before you write.
Great message! What a relief to have someone (almost) in the White House who gets it. Um, but what was that annoying clacking in the soundtrack. Was that a typewriter? You've got to be kidding! In this day and age, someone was transcribing the speech on a typewriter?!?!?
Hey Aaron, are you a creationist as well by any chance?
FYI, Greenland got its name at the beginning because those in charge wanted to attract people to work for them up there, and the name "Ice land" was not very appetizing.
Global warming IS real, and WE are causing it. You might as well join in or continue to be ridiculed, besides being a burden to those who do want to make a change for a future that will positively affect even your children, and theirs.

where was the carbon dioxide then... oh no some of the glaciers melted and broke off into the ocean!!! so what thats nothing new.. but tree rings and ice core samples show warming.. oh thats right there not good indicators of warming because they are subject to changes other than temperature. computer models hah what a joke oh yeah they need to run for decades to produce accurate readings. I believed this theory at first until I really looked at the evidence... fear is your only god believer
Hey aaron: We all know about "quote mining", but you have invented "Fact Mining"! Yep, just spew out a whole bunch of snippets of the truth and put them all together in whatever context suits your purpose. You weren't one of the dumb kids in school by any chance were you?

al gore is a demagogue, there is no logical evidence in his method only fear appeals and plays on prejudice' against modern industry. Hey Al!!! why won't you debate Professor of Meteorology at M.I.T. Richard Lindzen he seems to have called you out on your theory. Sorry Al looks like you couldn't buy all the scientists.. is this the hottest time in human history Al?? hmmm why is Greenland not named iceland? oh yeah because it wasn't covered in ice during medieval times when the earth was hotter.
You make some good points but you miss the fact that if we create a bunch of new jobs to AT LEAST clean the air, and protect God's creation (wild life, trees, waters) Isn't that a good thing?
LOL, Yeah I should choose my words better, farvision. However, I do believe in God as energy or spirit - not as an all powerful being hanging out in the netherworld. I think there is a lot of truth in all scripture but I do believe that most religion has f*@#$d it up for human kind. P.S. Interesting channel.
derrydump, thanks, glad you like my channel. As a scientist 'energy' has very strict meaning to me and although it has many forms none of them are (in themselves) intelligent, so I don't make that connection at all. As for spirit - sure, that's something within us.

global warming is just an extortion scam.. this is the 4th climate change doomsday hype in the last 100 years... there is virtually no evidence to support manmade warming.. its a 300 billion dollar a year porkbarrel project to line the pockets of the politicians. this is a bid by al gore to get back in the white house after the recount in florida he knows all he has to do is wait for the next natural cooling cycle and everyone will greet him as a national hero.. where is the evidence???

Finally a leader who will actually lead - what a shocking surprise this is after 8 years of oil men and Cheney running America. The Saudis are running scared now because they don't want us to get off oil. We can do it if we all do our part!
Wow, I am so pleased you heard us who felt Al Gore should be a part of America's environmental future. Thank you sir, for once again hearing the people's voice, and the voices of our children.

The relevant wave lengths with respect to the earths climate are between 0.1 and 100 micrometers. That is UV, visible, & Infra-red light. You seem to be confused. The point of talking about black bodies is that it is typical to show black body curves on plots of Radiance versus wavelength.
bluetwinky 2 years ago
Further to the point, what is refered to as "the strong 15 micrometer band" is responsible for greater than 90% of CO2 caused warming.
See "SCIENCE" Volume 213 Number 4511 page 957 - 966 published 28 August 1981.
bluetwinky 2 years ago
Ah, yes I did mean nanometres, but that's wrong. My bad, I meant micrometres -- I totally cede your correction. Honest mistake.
However, the fact that a certain band is responsible for 90% of CO2 warming (not 90% of greenhouse warming) means little if CO2 has such small potential to warm anyway. In fact my point was that CO2 warming takes place within a thin band, so I see we're in agreement.
Haven't read that article, I'll check it out (dude, kinda old though).

As of May 2009 CO2 is at 390 ppm.

Well, at least you believe the Earth is at least 10,000 years old. That puts you slightly ahead of the creationist retards, at least.
YouTube is full of cranks who question every aspect of mainstream science, from the age of the Earth, to the cause of the World Trade Center collapse.
What do you plan to do when world petroleum extraction goes into free fall?
Are you aware that Mexico's oil extraction is dropping by more than 10% per year now?

Well I don't know where you're getting your data from, but mine says that the last decade was the hottest in the last century and the decade before that was the second hottest. It says that last year was about the seventh hottest on record and that it was hotter than any last century.

When the rest of the world is tooled up industrially and economically to procure energy for free from the sun, wind, tides and geothermally (and who knows where else as innovation continues), if the US is still fueling itself by extracting oil from shale and burning coal, it will be consigned to oblivion. The world doesn't need that and nor do you. The UN has nothing to do with this.
kimberleycalling 3 years ago 3
I'm not an economist, but I don't think that you're going to climb out of your economic hole by using the same methods that got you in there.
If you look back over the last century or so, you will see that every time there was an economic crisis (post 30's depression, post WW2, post 1890's depression), it was complete about faces and massively gearing up the economy in whole new ways that saved the day. If it is managed intelligently, a green energy revolution will turn things around entirely.
kimberleycalling 3 years ago

Don't you think that might be a green way to source power for plug in electric vehicles?
kimberleycalling 3 years ago

Well that seals it: plug-in electrics will be the way of the future because them thar greenies are going to push solar and that Obama is going to fall for it hook line and sinker. It's going to be a power lead led recovery!

Yeah, we sure as hell don't need any of them new fangled plug in electric cars. How the hell are we going to find power leads long enough to get them from home to work or on our holidays. Hell if we have them thar hydrogen cell cars, we might drive clear offa the sides of the planet. God damn, I wish those greenies would think things through!

they have turned us against nations, ideas, and even ourselves. now they turn us against our own system of capitalism by turning us against the wealthy who by the way create American jobs and innovations that make our lives comfortable.

With clarity & determination.

niether do I
fireofenergy 3 years ago
And just how do I propose that? By use of billions of mirrors that reflect just a small part of the sun back into space. That is called reducing negative albedo. However, most of that sunlight would be focused onto steam generators. Hence Concentrated Solar thermal Power or CSP. Ya, it can cause an enviro frenzy, but so what. They don't care about the clean energy/economic/prevent the icecaps from melting all the way - solution...

So, mabey we are not to blame but are we supposed to act like dinos and do noth'n. Com'n naysayers, wake up and smell the methane!!!

I'm liking what these guys have to say.
The Earth we know took millions of years to
reach steady state.

Space-based solar power.
It's the only non-greenhouse thing that is scalable to a degree which allows the entire world to enjoy a "Western" (which shouldn't be called that as it includes the Japanese) standard of living, except maybe nuclear. But SBSP doesn't leave radioactive waste.
