You can shit out lame excuses all you want, fact is - the supposedly "invisible" aircraft was shot down by an outdated missile the F-117 was actually designed to counter. In short - F-117 failed to deliver. Result - retied and scrapped, billions of tax payer dollars down the drain for nothing.

The "modification" done to it were minor software adjustments and clever use of available equipment (triangulated position). Classic textbook.
What also played to the advantage was the LOS distance of less than 20km. At that distance even old and much weaker targeting radars are capable of taking a lock. Current generation radars would do that at about 50km no problems, and with and active seeker you only need to know the general direction regardless of the distance, even like 200km away - which is easily doable.

It wasn't luck, he was totally visible on radar, it was equipment from mid 60s and they spotted it very nice and clear.
