According to this video 35,000 Iraqi's died in a 3 year period, without laying blame or coming to conclusions of fact unsupported by any evidence I have to say that 35,000 is a big number. Now considering that Iraq has a population of 35 million it is fair to conclude that one in a 1000 people died incidental to our presence in just 3 years. Consider further that the Iraq war has been going on for 10 years and the death toll from all sources brings the number much higher. Everyone is affected.
On the nightly news I watched aerial surveillance of a running gun battle. As the insurgents burst out of a side street into a market square full of innocent bystanders a guided munition detonated in the square killing combatants and civilians alike indiscriminately. I have been looking for that footage without success, but the military was proud to display it at the beginning of the war when it was being sold as a video game.

This unit had just experienced this the previous day, when one of their members was killed, and the Marine in the video who did the shooting was injured himself. Through two tours in Iraq I can tell you how fabricated this is. Yes, there are incidents of civilian casualties. But like was said, those who do so are charged in accordance with what they do. More than 99% of the civilian casualties are caused by the insurgency.

According to this video 35,000 Iraqi's died in a 3 year period, without laying blame or coming to conclusions of fact unsupported by any evidence I have to say that 35,000 is a big number. Now considering that Iraq has a population of 35 million it is fair to conclude that one in a 1000 people died incidental to our presence in just 3 years. Consider further that the Iraq war has been going on for 10 years and the death toll from all sources brings the number much higher. Everyone is affected.

Of course war is sanitised - it always has been. Most of the civilians are killed by insurgents. Soldiers (very few of them) who commit such crimes are punished.
TV networks show what audiences want, and they generally don't want to see video of butchered people every day. And journalists are guilty of biased reporting anyway - for some reason they think journos should never be killed when they're in a freaking war zone, and they always talk more about reporters getting killed than anyone else.

The case of where the Marine shoots the man pretending to be dead: this was during a time where the insurgents were pretending to be injured, so when the Americans went to help them, they'd detonate a bomb or grenade. This unit had just experienced this the previous day, when one of their members was killed, and the Marine in the video who did the shooting was injured himself. Before I get the responses, I believe the majority of US troops are professional, brave & highly skilled. On the other hand, if you search youtube for footage from Iraq & Afghanistan you will hear Americans cheering when an AC130 destoys a building with enemy soldiers. This sort of mentality needs to be weeded out. A good soldier should not celebrate a kill, instead they should move on and continue doing their job. In a combat zone people kill and get killed. Things get blown up caught on fire, and destroyed. It is not pretty, never has been never will be. People have an unreal expectation that soldiers will go into a war zone and avoid commiting the actions of war. It would be impossible to explain the mindset to someone who has never been there. I can say this when the first highvelocity round crack the air beside your head..... You will know what to do next. It is life or death out there.

This kind of thing has happened in every war in human history and will happen in every war in the future. The enemy is the enemy, armed or not. injured or not. you let them go then they get another chance to kill our troops or anyone else they think is a worthy target. i don't believe i would've said what he said when he shot the man, but i would've shot him just the same as him.
