I really dig the recorded version of this tune. it's like watching him butcher his own song.....why he resorts to this hipster jazzclub nonsense i have no idea...man i do love a good teenage death song. does anyone know if this is what john cougar referenced in 'aint even done with the night?
Really? Not only did you knock Waits for what he did when he started (like when this video was made), but you brought up JOHN COUGAR in the same sentence!!! What the hell square?!? Goddamnit you made me mention John Cougar too!!! You should probably just delete your account and save us all the mental strain.
I like the recorded version as well but to not understand this performance means you have a ways to go in the appreciation of Tom Waits.
This is one of his all time greatest performances. He's firing on all cylinders. Ever nuance, every hand gesture, his tone, his posture and his pacing it's all spot on. He's performing with his whole being on this version.
you may be right...and it's probably the publicizing of this type of performance that trivializes it...some stuff only works live (kinda the way videotaping a wedding or birth tends to cheapen same--as if marriage and procreation aren't cheap enough)...it just seems self-conscious and contrived on video to me....
A few years ago I found an 'unofficial' album called Cold Beer on a Hot Night, it was a live performance from 197-something, and it had the most amazing recording of Burma Shave. I lost my copy of it and I'm still looking...
Absolutely NOBODY of the present day singers can ever top him when it comes to being cool. Justin Timberlake, you'd better start working for the burger king again, Tom Waits is way above what you'll ever can accomplish.
Frankly, I'm only stopping here to get me some gasoline. I guess I'm going that way, just as long as it's paved, I guess you'd say I'm on my way to a place I know as Burma Shave, so baby put your knees up on the glove compartment, just like that. Take out your berettes and let your hair spill out just like root beer, she popped her gum and her arched her back, and she said, "Marysville don't amount to nothing but a wide spot in the road."
Incredible.
Tom Waits' music is the barometer by which i measure all music now and forever.
A true original whose words paint beautiful pictures that are so real they can instantly transport you to wherever Tom wishes to take you.
