AS A PRECAUTION;

I would advise people to NEVER tighten the pan lock when a camera is mounted on the tripod.

If someone were to knock the pan rod while the pan is tightened the whole tripod is rigid and therefore it would probably fall over and could smash your camera. If you leave the pan lock loose and someone knocks the pan rod it will only move the camera. So you would have to set up your shot again but that's not as bad as a broken camera.
