  • get a girlfriend! fast!

  • You need sunlight

  • I like you Guy, thank you.

  • Xserve.

  • Chris, "We don't need no education " -Did you hear that song ? In 2011 , you will be your own Educator PhD at home with Server system . ( class on-line)

One pc for question on test , quiz , one pc for answer test , quiz , one pc for favorite porn movie , one pc for your instantly girlfriend 's email ..... Well , money is no -object , just satisfied yourself & do what you want is the secret of happy life !

  • A server machine could be useful for multi-tasking, processing and rendering.

  • they hate you, cus they aint u

  • You stop to use drugs, press CTRL + ALT + CANC and go out with girls (or gays)

  • retard

  • i am currently installing window server at home for educational reasons... what can you tell me to focus on and why? example, groups settings or pc on server.

  • He didn't answer the question correctly. He's talking about a server os. The question was about using a server machine. If you know what you are doing or want to know more then there is a clear advantage to using a server computer.

  • Your mouth is afrog, pls don't be toooomdramatic, keep ur ass and hands in a place and talk, I can't tolerate u, I'm closing this video aniw O M G

  • You mouth as frog

  • lol press or hold 4

  • @19travis1919 lmfaooooo

  • lmfao I want to see a dupstep remix for this video

  • lmfao watchin this high

  • There are more disadvages. But the advantages are simply. Servers are built to multitask But the Unbuffered dims realy Dumbs down your your ability to go game or run intensive apps. The processor on the other hand is built to multitask and takes alot more to Put them on full load

  • @viprk24OC You seem to know more than the dude in the video. I have an online radio show and I worry that my computer will freeze up because I have so may different browsers going at the same time searching for articles (and it's a pretty good computer), would I be better off getting a server or just add another desktop computer to the mix?

  • aGAEGW$Y&"#$& hate you, shut up

  • nerd

  • Stop making gestures with your Hand! You're not a magician...

  • yes just like your life!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO

  • how bout stability? arent servers more stable than desktops? intensive multitasking?

  • ok what about a server hard ware but using a standed OS

    whats your though's on that ? ? ? ? ??

  • run CentOS on a Dell Xeon 64GB RAM Dell PE Server as a Home PC =]

  • what program are you running behind you on your computer

  • @LamBboii hes running mac os 10 screensavers i think

  • what servers do i need to host matches like cod4 really for gaming

  • I am planning to make a VOD Media server (something like what theu have in the new Airplane Entertainment systems)

I want to basically create a server which I can access from my Various computers and watched movies and shows that i have saved on the server. If possible I would like to be able to serve multiple watchers at the same time. I would prefer a menu based system to access the movies and shows ( As opposed to opening folders and accessing the files ).

  • Hey junior, nice fake computer readout in your desk. Ever used an octal or hexadecimal maintenance panel to load a 256k micro memory and acutally interface with a computer core using machine language by just interpreting those silly little lights? Your set is like stuffing your shorts to make people think you....well...you get it. Decent info, but try to keep your hands down.

  • because of your home, atomic energy exists. Look at all that screens lolwtf.

  • sooo annoying

  • Hi I'm lockergnome and I have 15 double shots of coffee before making a video

  • stronzo di merda fuck

  • sei anche orfano

  • sei solo un nerd scavatore come scappyman

  • non fa ridere

  • can i have your office?

  • Sure there is! Buy 2 laptops, a tablet PC, one PC in the kitchen, one in the living room, and the server in the bedroom. Then you MUST have a server!

  • @rezn66 i think you missed the part that this was maybe intended for a main PC so ya there is no use. a home server is fine is fine if you have more than 1 computer but no benefit if its the only computer

  • STOP DRINKING COFFEE !!

    IMMEDIATELY !!

  • So do you use Mac and windows?? Or what

  • you fucking suck. you know dick, you fucking blow hahaha.

  • STABILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • server OS not really better but having an insane server MOBO is nice. shit loads of RAM, and having more than one processor fuk yeah. highly unneccesary as you probly wont ever use all of its hardware up but still cool for those into insane PCs

  • We at Cocky Domains want to thank you for your consistency with posting the excellent videos that you do. Server vs Desktop PC? We like them both.

  • this guy is getting more annoying in time -.-

  • Oh come on chris when you do your vids try and keep the title and your info accurate. lol server hardware or software? if you use windows 7 then server hardware is pointless if you use windows server as a desktop you have no idea what your doing as directx on windows server deliberately dont work. If you use Linux by god you need xeons or magny cores as compiling can take a long ass time.Core I7 is good but not good enough so amd are winning there price vs performance

  • This guy has a handicap :)) his life is worst the a f...... dog life, i wonder when is the last time he had seen the day light... life los

  • In my below posts/rant I am of course speaking only on behalf of Server 2008 vs Vista. I used the following two OS in my example because that is what I have run in my machine and thus am able to provide a comprehensive review of the two.

Note to self: Damn maybe I should become a writer.

  • @acdcgreatestbandever Interesting points and finally someone who knows lol. Microsoft cut and chop tailoring adding and removing services in there large versions of OS''s pay more get more but we wont let you have everything in one package meaning you need own several versions pay more and more again, then you only get that for 3 years and you need upgrade rofl. Great business model that no one can afford but you think you can as it came as default with your machine urm yea.

  • @acdcgreatestbandever Windows 7 maximum allowed cap on processor cores, physical processors and threads as an aim to model the hardware you buy to windows OS, buy windows server to run more cores, that sounds like a great idea. Windows 7 fpp 220.00gbp windows server standard with functional options and nothing more 1600.00 gbp urm oh and thats generally a 3 year life cycle urm NO chance. The features Microsoft provide are not that good and not worth that at all.

  • @acdcgreatestbandever lost but not least Microsoft have taken away the right for you to resell the software if you buy it and don't want it. eg. if you buy windows 7 and don't like it. you wish to give it to a friend as you go back to linux, beeep you cant do it, only you can use it as you opened the box. OEM is still expensive but lives and dies with the machine it gets activated on so you have to give the whole system away. that includes motherboard failure yup it dies with the board too.

  • (PART 5)

The intention of my posts was in no way to bash desktop OS (vista, 7, etc), rather to point out that its not as simply cut-and-dry as Chris states. Sure a desktop OS is designed to perform the tasks a "personal computer" was designed to do (i.e surf web, chat, play games, music, video editing, etc) but what he hasn't stated is the performance difference between the two. I have found from personal experience the server 2008 OS to be more stable and crash far less often than Vista.

  • (PART 4)

As far as application compatibility I was surprised at the high rate of running most applications on a server operating system. You will find that the biggest beef of running a server OS is in fact antivirus support. Most consumer AV simply doesn't work on Server 2008 in a simple point-and-click install. I have also witnessed that the performance of the server operating system will vary from machine to machine. My machine may have a more positive effect with 2008 than yours.

  • (PART 3)

Graphics 3D testing showed nearly identical specs but was expected. Sure there is no clear advantage of gaming on 2008 over Vista but it is still delightful with the opportunity that you can develop apps and play Battlefield Bad Company 2 on the same machine. Don't take my personal experience as the "say all, end all" debate for server vs. desktop operating systems but ever since I have switched to Server 2008 as my primary desktop I have been nothing but delighted at the stability.

  • (PART 2)

You would be surprised how stable the server 2008 operating system is versus its desktop counterpart (vista) despite sharing kernels. There are minor variations in the server version of the NT 6.0 kernel that make it perform smoother. Large RAM operations on server 2008 were nearly 40% improved over Vista on identical hardware. Disk I/O operations were over 10MB/sec faster in this same setting on my machine over Vista.

  • Hey Chris.

You make some good points about the practicality of a "personal" computer. It is just that.... PERSONAL. There is however one compelling reason you forgot to point out and that is using a server operating system (especially 2008 and forward) as a developers workstation. Sharepoint for example. I think its more about what YOU want it to do and not what features it has to offer. My machine came with Vista and while it has Media Center...I have no reason to ever use it. (Continued...)

  • I hate the way you talk. kthxbai

  • @Disinf3ctant dont watch it then?

  • @xLDKxClan

I assure you I don't. I clicked the video without knowing that he would talk at me like that.

  • I got a server from dell !!!!

  • mac

  • Servers are meant to sit in a rack all day and server out clients, compute tasks, serve and receive data, etc

Desktops are meant to sit around all day and play video games

  • i love you gnomy

  • 3 words ROAMING USER PROFILES.... But that is mainly as a secondary machine , the client will still be the "primary used pc", but a reason to have a server at home but not as a primary workstation would be to use roaming user profiles. Being able to logon to multiple computers at one time with the same user account = awesome...

  • con't

most modern pc's have, which is one. RAM is higher graded and also you can have larger quantities. Like an old home pc when it becomes outdated, many people turn them into NAS devices. So what would be the problem with taking a relatively modern server and utilising it with a pc os such as windows 7 or leopard? No monitoring just serious power, more powerfull than any gaming rig to date and as a result massive overkill.

  • Im pretty sure richard was literally talking about hardware, not the os. In the whole server harware specs and speeds are much higher than the average pc and at the most cheaper too. Going back to p3 cpu's there were server motherboards that supported two physical cpu's (effectively dual core). Many gamers were found to buy these motherboards for the better speeds. This is still the case today, if you can have 4 physical cpu's surely that is much better than what still....

  • @bigbignosedestroyer Hardware speeds and specs are much higher? What have you been smoking? Server hardware uses hardware that is built for reliability first, speed second. See the Xeons and their conservative instruction sets. Why not the latest and fastest? They need reliable. SAS harddrives are slower, smaller and far more expensive, unless you take the 15K drives, which are even smaller(=lower continuous throughput). Why is this? Lower density means less chance of errors, SAS protocol is

  • @bigbignosedestroyer a protocol with more ecc. Server cpu's also use ecc(normally). Hotswap and dual psu is also common. For more power or more disk throughput? Nope. One can die and the other(s) takes over.

Ram? I have 16GB in a Sandy Bridge desktop. Servers do not have much larger ram modules, just more cpu's on one board with each cpu his own ecc ram. How is physical single cpu's an advantage? It's what L3 is for.

Server hardware is built to be used 24/7 and stay reliable. Keyword. Reliable.

  • I like the binary clock on your desk cabinets.

  • You look like McLovin from superbad.

  • I have a server as my home computer 8 GB of ram and a 6.8 x4 GHz CPU 2TB HDD it is fast :)

  • i think there is one big plus... if you have alot of music or movies that you buy online or download having one computer on the network that saves all them so you can access them from ever pc in your house

  • I got the server computer as a personal computer at school 8-D

  • WTF the iMac

  • I think it's funny how one of his monitors is bigger than his iMac

  • u are annoying

  • @rowenasputnik wtf are you watching this for you dumbass?

  • @rowenasputnik So are you!

  • @rowenasputnik and you are an asshole

  • @rowenasputnik He is, but he is amart ;)

  • @mandoza3 smart*

  • rock on programing got tuffer with all the bois and win format changes sad i got to get xp back though i got win7 xp mode dont by my software sad even tryed rewriting some of it bad idea so im buying a 2nd pc to run my software so i can update my games rock on from bluestarsstudios peace keep kool:)

  • Well, it would future proof your system for years and years to come.

  • i dont even know what a pc is

  • i have heard that Windows Server 2003 R2 makes a very good desktop operating system, better than that of Windows xp or vista, but have not heard any comparison of 2008 vs vista or 7. It is my understanding that server 2003 in an NT version ahead of xp, 5.2 vs 5.1 which would make it more stable or robust i would guess, but i have never tested this theory. the closest i have gotten was windows home server, which is 2003 R2 small business with a dumbed down GUI and restricted features. it's fast.

  • I would use a server motherboard with windows 7 ultimate 64bit, 6 500GB SSDs RAID 0, dual intel xeon processors, 144GB of RAM, 2 PNY quadro 4GB Workstation video cards running in SLI, 1600w PSU, and a thermaltake v10 case. And break the new 3D Mark Record!!!

  • @TheCoD456Gamer I second that! also, you would future proof your sytem with that! for years and years!!!!

  • what is the best software for a home server software

  • 4 the pc noobs :)

  • Windows server is way too expensive in my opinion, it's like 9 times more expensive than the desktop version of Windows. Mac OS X server isn't that much more expensive but it isn't really different from the desktop version of Mac OS X.

  • @MAOSYCE : you can use normal OS.

  • @juidas : NO. the 980x have a single QPI you cannot run dual i7 extreme cpu's on a dual socket board. how ever! there is Xeon processors are actually 15 to 20% fasther than the i7 extreme.

  • What's a good Server that I can install on a PC computer and be fully compatible with both my Mac and PC laptops ??(Mac is more necessary though)

  • Ubuntu Linux sever

  • @Metriod29 Hey thanks, I was considering Ubuntu but was unsure.

  • I don't think any IT Professional will support your opinion.

  • Actually lol if he got some new glasses or contacts, grew a bit of stubble and stopeed waving his arms around so much he could be a dude!

Main thing is though he gives cool info and thats what I like :0)

  • Hahahah! I love the comments on the computer.

  • You are doing a good job here.

  • This guy's officially my favourite geek ever.

    What a legend.

  • hi, just have a question, how can i get to answer my phone trough my pc, thanks for the help.. and thanks for the tips on trimming the sideburns, (nice bathroom)

    alex.

  • the two best reasons to use server os over desktop are as follows.

    1. the os itself it faster and uses less resources.

    2. u can use alot more memory which can greatly improve system proformance.

my system running windows server 2008 enterprise has 32gb of ddr 800 and is far faster than using win 7 on a computer running 8 gb of ram

  • actually server OS normally don't use as much resources. so it would start up faster and use less ram and CPU and stuff.

  • Not necessarily. Server hardware and server operating systems do extensive checks to make sure ALL the hardware is working and online before anything is allowed to be used, so often server OSs don't boot as fast as their client counterparts

  • ƐɔuƐ_ℸƐ{}Ɛ ɟƐɥɔ

    chef excellence for life

  • i like what he says at the begining

  • my speakers dont work?

  • with a server you can have 12+ GB of ram, 2 processors (etc.) and run it 24/7 without worries

  • @Govadina Nothing is stopping you from doing that with a desktop computer

  • forget server software buy a big hp/ibm/watever server with 4 CPUs and run a personal version of windows x64 on it I always wanted to try that

  • Server hardware has a higher bin rate, that's something that you might wanna think about if you want to run it 24/7 for a long time.

  • Most people would not benefit from running a server at home. Desktop PCs can now do RAID 0, 1, 5, etc using SATA HDDs - have as much as 16GB or RAM, and run multi-core CPUs. Server hardware is expensive because it is built to last under extreme conditions.

As far the OS goes - on the Windows side of things, the only benefit is when you have multiple users - you can create domains, manage user resources, etc. On the down-side, a server OS is rather expensive.

  • if you pay for your server's OS, you're doing it wrong.

  • Yep he's not a full geek, he's an English teacher.

  • May I ask what camera you use?

  • lol. 2:44. some guys says Unix is 20,000$...

Ummm yea...if your a sucker! Oh wait i see a mac. hahaha

  • @HudsoniteProductions

lol, but you are slightly off there. Mac's roots do go down to a Unix based OS, but after a couple feline-named releases, Apple started to base mac off of Other kernels, but they still used Unix of course. If you're interested on this subject, you could do a little research. I find it fascinating (although I'm a PC-user lol)

still that joke never gets old

  • If you buy a Sun microsystems server computer, or IBM with a linux server, or ubuntu server, it will cost you 20,000.

  • Theres a hundred reasons to run a small server. you can run multiple raid arrays, wireless wifi. Store all your crap in the arrays and access them from wireless or other computer if you have several like I do. Stream

  • You can do roaming profiles, meaning you can set up profiles on the server and log into them from any computer on your network, that's a advantage of having a server. Can also run backups from it if you have the storage space, meaning it accesses your computers and backs your stuff up automatically.

  • While they're eating their dinner roflfl

  • The Mac Server running my father's medical practice scheduling, email, and contacts does not have some things that come with a standard mac.

  • I rather a Desktop Pc then a server its kind of stupid for server for personal home computering,

most people do small things on there computer a person does not need a server os, this dude that sent this message is a dumb fuck,

  • Really great to see one of your videos with the live chat back.... can you start putting at the bottom again? That was what first got me hooked on your videos.

  • apparently thier are some good oc'able stuufs in some servers, never rly looked myself tho

  • 36 isn't old! lol. He does look young though. lol. Alot of geeks I know are youthful looking...damn them! lol.

  • How long have you been using the Canon GL2 to run your live video stream chris, How has it held up?

  • Oh wow, Chris is starting to get the "Larry King" shoulders.

  • 39, shit he looks younger!.. wow he's old!

  • Dunno why your reply doesn't show...but nevermind...What are you trying to say?!?! lol. That geeks don't get laid often? Plenty of sex keeps you looking young actually. :-D

  • Chris is 39

  • @VincentSinclair He is actually 36...

  • You people DO realize that the mods did not make up the rules in my chat room, correct? *I* did. Therefore, you deal with them. Certain words and phrases are not allowed due to LONG histories of past / prior abuse. It's not my fault when supposed adults wish to join the channel and act like complete children, allowed to cuss behind mommy's back for the first time. Note: I am NOT calling anyone in particular a child. I was merely pointing out that it DOES, in fact, happen.

  • @lockergnome osx86, lol

    DROWN-IN-IT WITH YOUR MAC's!!!

  • you need to pay more attention to them because have the time people are not doing anything wrong and power hungry mods kick and ban people left and right no matter if its the right choice or not

  • Actually, I DO pay attention. Every one of the "complaints" that come in are researched, by looking at the logs. I have not once seen a case of "power abuse". It's normally people acting like idiots, and then throwing a fit when they don't get their way. :)

  • Exactly my point. :)

  • I've been banned for posting a link that was posted by an admin 2 hours beforehand. Who cares? Evade ban, new nick, flood ;)

SCSI is generally more adopted by servers, SCSI hard drives are CHEAP -- when bought second hand from eBay (but never used) you can pick up 8x20GB or so for $50 and what you end up with is a RAID0/5/whatever that loads your games and the likes far faster. Electricity is expensive, though. Notebooks are sufficient for most and weren't mentioned in this video :(.

  • Comment removed

  • @hondaacura303 i got kicked for no reason cus someone sed who uses a mac and i sed "no i use windows xp" and then i got kicked

  • @beansterman1998 You probably got kicked because you can't spell.

  • @RollTehSuidice i do that 4 quikness,

  • How old is chris?

  • shane dawson is better then you

  • Servers are great for businesses that have 6 or more employees.

  • wow...I kinda learned nothing

  • Funny thing about this is that I was actually eating dinner, it's like 8PM here.

  • hey chirs i got a new labtop for chirsmas and you tube always needs to buffer why is my laptop acting this way please awser me????????!!!!!!!!

  • It probably has to do with your internet.

  • i really doubt its ur laptop, prob ur internet connection

  • Comment removed

  • trollerskating

  • Meh, i wouldn't worry about them, lol.

  • Isn't any of your business is it?

  • These are the videos I like. Thank you, Chris.

  • You can't speak your opinion in chris pirillo chatroom mods would just give you warnings and ban you for childish reasons. I remember I say I like justin tv better then ustream and mod told me not to mention justin tv. Chris Pirillo chatroom is all about censorship.

  • Meh, That's not true.

I speak my opinion on there all the time, but in a "diplomatic" way, they do not warn and ban for childish reasons.

Just read the rules and you'll be fine, :)

  • It becomes annoying after a while when the mod there keeps warning you about what I could mention or not. for example you can't say the word torrent, justin tv,jackass is not even a curse word it was a world wide movie for crying out loud am too much of man for people to tell

me what I could say or not. In real life if a person was to tell me what I could say or not say I would have knock that person flat out on there back a long time ago.

  • u have to realize that he runs a business with sponsers, if sponsers see that there is just a whole lot of cussing and illegal activities running on his website, they are gonna drop. thats clearly why mods are there. and its quite clear your an idiot
