  • @Hofsteder Can you tell me where you are in youtubes or your last concert? I'd like to see a sample of your playing. Thanks.

  • what the f* am i listening to glenn gould?

  • ... just listen to her music ...her Chopin , her LOVE to Bach ,Beethoven, Rachmaninow etc...thats human ,thats art ,love & life !!!

Greetings from Berlin ,where we have listen to her plays on different stages in famous houses ...........

  • Grimaud used to record on the Japanese denon label when she was ultra young. now she's famous.

  • Comment removed

  • But that is what is pushed "her looks" and

believe she knows this and milks it to the inth degree -her playing is about conservatory degree level for all the

so called insights -she bores with her contrived intense looks after a while.

  • I'm learning piano right now, never knew it was so HOT :D

  • Please, kind gentlemen. Too much talk about her looks here. Judge her playing, not her face. Her fingers are performing, not her eyes. If she were any less attractive and still just as good of a pianist I'd look at her the same way. To be objective, I see her as more attractive than Argerich and Uchida but far weaker. We have to try to separate the performer from the performed in this case. Do justice to the music- and her talent.

    Cheers.

  • For those not understanding french (or german subtitles) Hélène highlights the differences in perception that come up from diffrent ways of playing it. It is a pitty that the sound on this video has a delay of about 4 seconds against the image. I am repairing this on a copy I have made for myself and also add english subtitles. Unless the original author (dafuckinmart) has a claim against it, I'll post it shortly on youtube.

  • she's speaking French and the subtitles are in German (?), neither of which I understand. but what's coming out of her fingertips and what can be seen in her eyes needs no translation... amazing.

  • she's very sexy indeed and I mainly go for blokes.

  • Grimaud's recording of the Emperor Concerto is one of the best I've heard - powerful and poetic in turn.

  • Sad: Whenever she'll play on stage/tv, people will think: Bah, she's only here 'cause of her looks. But she kicks ass. I liked her version of Rachmaninov Piano Sonata 2 much better than any previous versions.

  • trop haché, vilaines sonorités!

  • @lilooane quelle inculte tu fais !!

  • @Philly2002 loser

  • great, french translated to german, very clear to me who speak spanish and just learned english... by the way what music is that, chopin?

  • Schumann, Sonata in A minor, probably

  • @BrettStasa Yes, thank you for the info, Schumann's Violin/Piano Sonata in A minor

  • i think shes actually really pretty.

  • oh my god she's beautiful!

  • Debate and the free expression of opinions are essential to a democracy. That being said, Grimaud is an exceptionally talented artist. Of course it helps that she looks somewhat like Jennifer Garner or Andie Mcdowell but her artistry, in and of itself, is superb. She's a class act.

  • Agree with MrNewchange!

  • I dont get you people.

    Shes fantastic.

I guess you want to hear this music played exactly the same way every time like a washing machine.

European classical music is dead anyway—a few stragglers havent yet noticed that the show is over.

  • @kellymich What do you mean : the show is over? I think the contrary. Both creation and performance.

  • @kellymich I fear you are right - but what a loss for the human race.

  • another case of someone with limited talent being portrayed as being much above their station, purely because of her religion.

  • what is this piece, sounds like Schumann???

  • Helene! I will marry you someday!!

  • wow, what beautiful eyes... not to mention the music comin from them...

  • Say what you like about Helene, she is definitely talented and doesnt try to sell her looks, always looks respectable. I give her credit for actually trying to interpret music as the composer originally intended.

  • I think her playing is quite good, but you're right about the bobbing and weaving. And what's up with the weird voice in the background?

  • Why have you been recommending your own comment (eleven

11+s in a few days makes no sense).

This is not a master-class, it's just a video of her practising

  • Il parait que ma connaissance de la langue francaise est meilleure que la votre de la langue anglaise, a savoir - "from whoever" au lieu de "from whomever" et "there" au lieu de "they're". LOL Search anywhere on this site or anywhere else and tell me where you find the term "master class" referring to anything resembling this video. And yes, I am a musician.

  • How is this a "master class"? Who is her pupil? A practice session is not a master class.

  • Good point. But then, look at the video's description...

  • Nice video.

Arte is really a good channel :)

  • I saw her perform and met her 15 years ago, even then she was one of the best in the world.

  • I'm in love with Helene Grimaud !

  • Plenty of people around here are discussing the point of whether or not Hélène Grimaud is a genius. Could you please explain us what is a genius?

  • What is the name of the work Miss Grimaud is rehearsing ?

  • I ve always wondered why she got so much attention so early-so dangerous! but with her talent and she is damn smart I gues that 's why she kept all da attention

  • Schumann violin sonata op 105 or a french typewriter?

    :-))

  • I'd do her.

  • she is so pretty, she's an alright pianist...

  • that is the choppiest piece of shit I've ever heard. She needs help in so many ways. legato technique to start darlin.

  • lol, i think its because there no pedal for this piece, but im not sure...

  • I think she is just showing different ways she practices the piece and explaining different difficulties of this particular piece. I don't understand French very well so I am not sure but I think in one part she was talking about how it is hard to voice the top part when the other parts are in the middle register of the piano. She seems to be practicing without pedal for clarity and focusing on getting the correct rhythm.

  • I don't understand French, but I am still reasonablely fluent in German, in which this documentary was subtitles. I have to report that your assessment is correct.

Doesn't it look like she is using the pedal at 3:26? I thought so.

  • @penuchek

Not that I like her very much, but you believe so because you do not speak french. If you did , you would understand that she is playing non legato on purpose and you would understand why. By the way, offering your help, I understand that you are a concert pianist and you must have won at least either the Tchaïkovsky or the Chopin compétion?

  • yikes!

  • I think that, contrary to what a lot of users say, she has actually faced a lot of prejudice because of her looks. If she'd been ugly, she'd have less people criticising her playing.

  • yeeeeeeah!!! true dat!!!

  • There may have been some of that. Overall though, beautiful people are given the benefit of the doubt, because it is desired for them to be both good and look good.

  • that's funny! do u think its ok for ugly to be bad??!

being good looking is really such a burden because of stupid stereotyping .

  • Of couse, I don't. What I wrote was that it is a know fact that people are less critical of attractive people.

From what I have said, being attractive wouldn't be a burden.

  • Very true! But in the end, I think that whoever is really good will be recognized, whether attractive or not.

  • @romymistique: By "in the end", do you mean the time when Helene Grimaud won't be attractive anymore? :D But yes, you're probably right.

  • @MrNewchange Sorry to say though, the fact remains that her playing is rather superficial.

  • bs, if she had been ugly, she wouldn't have been favored and promoted by teachers and concert organizers, the classical music world is increasingly based on looks - I guess since there are so many good players these days, the only way people distinguish them is by looks. Look at any promotional material for a symphony orchestra - it's all glamor shots.

  • @MrNewchange yeah true

  • @MrNewchange

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Looks are superfluous when it comes to music; and she certainly doesn't exhibit any unique or special qualities as a pianist.

  • @MrNewchange I disagree. That's kind of the classic argument used for people like her. I'm not saying she's terrible, but her skill is definitely way out of proportion with her success. On top of that, the amount that her marketing teams PUSHES her looks -- it's obviously a leverage point for them.

  • ah das Schumann

  • This is a documentary recorded in the early 1990s about young artists working on a piece that is new to them (Schumann, Opus 105 No. 1, Sonate for violin and piano) - showing the working process and the performance at the end.

I love this video. Hélène is just great!

  • new to them.. but how new? not first sight right?

  • How is this piece called?

  • She is genuinely incredibly beautiful.

  • I would have to say that she is one of the most beautiful pianists I have seen, not to mention how brilliant her playing is.

  • Masterclass ? Je ne vois pas son élève ? Personne ne veut prendre de ses cours ?

  • gilipollas...

  • She is very attractive.

  • Does anyone have this video with English subtitles? I would love to know what she is saying because I bet it is very interesting to hear how she is practicing and what she is thinking. Her playing is beautiful.

  • "wolfchick" *lol*

  • What does her body language tell us about her?

  • She has synesthesy: different senses that are stimulated simultaneously by the same stimulus. In her case, it is a simultaneous stimulation of hearing and vision. If you look closely, you can almost obeserve in her reactions (look attentively at her eye reactions).

Otherwise her body language tell us among other things that she is a very passionate person and that she really lives the music from the inside.

  • Don't we all have our different senses stimulated simultaneously by outside stimuli?

French teachers tell students to WORK on their piano as if it were an unpleasant necessity.

English teachers encourage their students to PLAY the piano as if it were a pleasure!

  • Well, not really. Most people, among which I am, won't have there visual sense stimulated by music. To make it concrete in the case of Hélène Grimaud: playing the piano causes her to experience the vision of all kinds of colors in all sorts of combinations, rythms and so on...

  • Surprising!

But Commedia dell'Arte actors use their nose to see, their eyes to hear as if all senses were linkled. And their public understands this very well.

Colours and emotions have been linked to musical sounds for a long time (Charpentier, Skriabin) but remain chiefly...theoretical.

  • Please.....blah blah blah.

  • This looks like a clip from a show on french TV... they are probably trying to show her way of working, which is very interesting. She doesn't have to be perfect... the point is her philosophy of how she is crafting, for example by going through without the pedal to have more clarity.

  • OK, I understand you now.

I have seen several video clips where the bad recording produces negative remarks on the performers...

  • maybe you should teach her

  • I do'nt deserve your irony, or sarcasm. I did never intend to criticize her ability as a piano-player, and I have not heard enough of her to evaluate or compare her performance. Only there two errors in your reply. First, technical command is acquired by hard work, much more than taught. Second, my remark concerns the wrong attribution to the video as a masterclass, subject that I could find repeatedly in former comments, many people that agree in this aspect.

  • fantastique!

She plays well...teach well..and is beautifull. For thoso who are complaining about she is not using the pedal..she explain she is doing it to make possible hear everything and improve the performance.

C ést utile quand on compreendre a'autre langues que l'anglais...

  • C'est fantastique! Elle est joly, jue tres bien ....marveille

  • what piece is she playing?

  • she is playing the first movement of Schumann's a-minor violin sonata op.105

  • It`s a shame, that I have to close my eyes to enjoy the music... She is too beautiful...

    ---

no pedal practicing is very helpful, for crisp precise playing. no pedal practicing is essential for precision timing.

  • Masterclass ? Je ne vois pas son élève ? Personne ne veut prendre de ses cours ?

  • oui.oui....................too much subjetivism, and to many prhasing errors.

    lokopiano

  • Who even needs sound ? Talented and what a gloriously beautiful woman.

    Nice doggy too.--DF

  • Well, it's not a recital! And she explains why she does play it without pedal (to clear the things out and hear every detail one cannot hear with the pedal, take care of every note and the relation between them, etc.)

  • she is the greatest. get it? open your ears. don't only listen with your eyes.

  • gould, richter, gilels, & grimaud

  • god, she is so sexy! i would like to have a night with her...so sexy mouth and lips. devil! i want her badly

  • such beautiful eyes, such wonderfull music...may be God exists

  • You determine the existenece of God via the beauty of eyes and music?

  • it's just a saying

    chill

  • "Masterclass" is hardly the apt description as it's just a work session with comments. The close acoustic does her no favors and it's not a very good advert for Baldwig pinos, sounding too harsh. But she talks good common sense, plays well, and indeed is really beautiful. So: an agreeable vid!

  • bla bla bla... shut the fuck up, folks .. She is a tremendous musician. Basta

  • kissone7: she's playing Schumann's best Sonata for violin and piano, op.105, I guess

  • what piece is this she's playing?

  • schumma's sonata op 104 i a minor

  • She's incredibly sexy. I like her lips and her moaning at 1:55.

  • That was just stupid.

  • First of all this is my personal opinion.Learn to respect mine and others different comments.Your frase was just stupid for this reason.

  • Frase? How about you grow some brains. Where did you go to school donk?

  • I've just replay to you.I considerate "pianist" other solists and not Helen.I'don't like her about everythink, and I told you that this is my personal opinion, that its all.Don't worry about my activities and studyes.I know my work.

  • If you want your opinion being repsected, learn first so respect the others. Your pretencion to give advise to Grimaud becoming a model does not deserve any, any respect!

    .

  • No,sorry but you're wrong.I've explain my opinion about this pianist.I respect always every opinion; For exemple: if you think that she is an exlellent interpreter, sure I'will respect you, don't have any doubt. But If I say that I' prefere to know,or see Grimaud to do an other work,'cause I'don't like her playing way, this is exlusive my opinion.

  • sexy

  • If you have a chance to meet or talk to Helene in person, your perception of her will b different

She is 1 of the kindest, most lovng and caring person I know. Gave up her personal life for music, I admire her devotion. She is an extremely loyal friend.

    Her 1st recital was when she's 4, I can't even do sight-reading when I was 4.

Her love of people is incredable, so why all the hate?

Is it just jealousy? She's born beautiful, is that her fault?

She doesn't hv n ego. Plz b nice to my friend.

  • I respect her. But I don't fancy many of her interpretations. What I find is amazing is what she does with such small hands!

  • small hands?? OMG...hahah and Maria Joao Pires has what?

  • I simply can't understand all these negatives abt her. Is it a crime to speak in her native tongue (French) in an interview?

The fact that she IS beautiful only enhances the watching.

She is super intelligent, an IQ of close to 180. Finished her Conservatory study by age 17

These "pomme frite" comments are really not fair and extremely racist. It bothers me a lot.

Barenboim regards Helene as one of the best pianist he has ever come across with in his life.

    What's wrong with you guys?

  • George, you need to get an eye check-up and some new glasses, Helene has been given by God a stunningly beautiful face, eyes, hair, smile, etc. And a very pretty voice as well, but glasses won't help you to appreciate that.

  • @eaunan God must have been in an extremly good mood when he created this wonderful woman. He put in all his beauty and intelligence into this creation Helene Grimaud.

  • @eaunan Don't bring God into this. You're selling her short.

  • Helene has stunning supermodel looks. U really need your eyes checked.

  • She is absolutely DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!!!! Good pianist too...

  • I find her beautiful; she's a bit funny too ...

  • So true...

  • Come. She is beautiful, and you know it.

  • A year ago, I noted here: "This is not a traditional "master class" -- that's a misleading title for this vid. Instead, we see her taking the music apart in order to make her points about rubato, how to practice, find a tempo, etc. This really isn't a very difficult piece to play." There's quite a bit of discussion relevant to recent comments if you drill back to the older comments.

  • so, where's the violinist then? this is not a piano piece, it's a piano-violin sonata, she should take him apart too...haha. and even if you say this is not a lesson, i still think it's completely boring and irrelevant.

  • I just love her!

  • Helene's masterclass would have been more useful had it been in English. You have the most beautiful eyes

  • Check out the new release : R. Schumann 1. Violinsonate 1. Satz, on YouTube; you will hear the entire sonata.

  • Not...is Piano Concert in A minor, 1 mov.

The Violin Sonata n° 1 (Opus 105) is for Violin and Piano....thanks

  • Helene plays with Gil Shaham at the end thus it becomes a violin sonate. Please watch the entire video for reference. There are actually two parts. The concerto part is when she practised for the sonata. Cheers.

  • Sorry...Your comment is right!!!... I hope forgive me....a hug ... ... your friend..Chriss

  • Schumann- Violin Sonata no.1 in A minor Op.105 1er mouvement

  • R. Schumann, Piano Concert in A minor....

  • can someone tell me what piece this is?

  • Schumann violin sonate

  • luv the begining of the schumann.. mmm

  • please translate someone to english or polish !

  • somebody wrote me 'bout "not understanding German or French"...

am I judging her by what she said? what a good story she could tell or what a voice she has?

NO - be sober dude(who wrote me that stupid reply) , it's piano play! not grandma's story telling corner. no matter what she could say or how she describe what she's done, ain't no good sounds, no recording quality factor here, just she doesn't know how to articulate, how to play the good sounds.and sounds with connection in between.

  • If you would understrand what she says, you'd know the reason why everything sounds shit and nonlegato: she plays it without pedal for balancing purposes.

  • waht is te name of the song?

  • Arguments about her abilty are always going to be subjective. If she was less glamorous of course people would take less notice. But - she is what she is, and if people listen to the music because its her, they're still listening to it: result. Personally, I think Idil Biret's interpretation of the Rach Etudes op 33 are more understated, and ultimately finer, but she's an elderly Turkish lady........

  • you make some good points. I rate Grimaud about the 75th best pianist in the world, but the 3rd best female pianist in the world for who i'd like to fuck.

  • You actually have a list? lol.
