This song just gets better and better every time I hear it. Thank You GOD for letting me grow up during the time that this kind of good music was played on the radio!!
We all have our opinions so here's mine! There's something to be said about Dusty's, Baby's and the Marvellettes! All are great interps! Dusty's , very caucasian very well done w/her own style! Baby, has that wonderfull soulfull voice clean, clear and crisp! Wanda's rendition had that killer Detroit soul sound of the era! The nearly out of place La La's just a that special touch! Surviving the mean streets of Motown for 60+ years I am a white expert on quality soul! Baby's style Sparkles!!!
What year was this song released??? anybody know pls??.. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and I remember this song as one of my fav's.. soundtrack of my life...
@MrJohnshopkins53 Hi there. This great cut was released in March 1963, it made it into the national Top 40. It's impossible for me to ever get tired of hearing this song.
I remember this oozing out of the radio -CKLW - back in the day. The Marvelettes may be my all time favorite group but Baby kicks their butt on this one.
@maxtefarian - you must be from the Detroit, MI/Windsor, Ont. region. CKLW was THE hottest radio station in both the U. S. and Canada, back then. It was known as the BIG EIGHT. A lot of the careers of major singing stars were launched by this radio station.
Why do some people find it necessary to be so rude simply because someone states they like another recording artist's version better? How immature! Everyone's taste in music is different and should be respected. If we all liked the exact same things it would be a boring world.
@wickedlittlethings This version is beyond reproach! never heard the others, don't need to. I think it is RUDE" for peoples with DISH WATER, TIN PAN ears to come on beautiful music posts, Bringing up BUDDY HOLLY, MICK JAGGER, & THE GRATEFUL DEAD! I'll tell them in a heart beat, "THEY'RE "DEAD". Not RUDE. just The necessary truth!
@wickedlittlethings No need to be rude but I think I can understand it. It's rather annoying when you go on a site and hear something you like a lot and then the first thing you see is that some tiresome person has said, "Oh, but so-and-so is so much better."
oooweee !!! a sue label classic from 64 what a tune, first heard it back in the day up west, last chance saloon, the scene, went on to do a little D J spot at a club in ilford essex called the el grotto, played it loads there too, still sounds as good to me now as it did back then, i guess the good stuff is timeless eh ? thanks for posting, thanks for the magic R n B memory, thanks a million, regards dave
@troyboy7962 and you came on here to say that? who cares? We like this ONE better. go on the Marvelettes and say you like that version. No one cares if you like their version better.
@troyboy7962 Wow, you got sad taste in music, this version is better, so thanks for wasting your time making a dumb comment on here as if we care what version you like!
A terrific post! Justine Washington began singing solo since the age of 17. Of the 16 or so releases that did well on the r&b charts, "That's How Heartaches are Made" was her lone entry to break onto the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. I would bet this song was written by Bert Bacharach & Hal David, who also wrote material for Dionne Warwicke.
I would listen to this song on the late Saturday night dusties hour. This was one of the manys that I would hear. I had to be at least 9 or 10 years old. I would always sing this song out of the blue. I will always love this song and the other dusties that were around at this time
damm this takes me ryt back to my childhood,,my family parties,,i miss those days,,,love this song,,i was like 7yrs old n use to make my uncle play it over n over lol
This 1963 R&B song is one of my favorites from the 60's, from a woman who was one of Luther Vandross' singing idols, this is certainly vintage 60's R&B, thanks for the share BP.

A powerful record still, to be sure. She was quite a talent, and on a bigger record label almost certainly would have enjoyed a bigger career.

She sounds like she's reading a script whereas Dusty is telling it like it is. Either way, this song is pure pleasure sung from both artists.

@pgh45rpms The song was written by the team of Halley & Raleigh, not Bacharach & David.
