I did the same thing and it worked for mine! I had the 3 RROD. You just have to adjust the screws little by little once you place the heat sinks back onto the mother board. You can also try blocking the fans until you get 2 red rings. It's worked on all of them for the most part.

You need to apply the thermal paste to the CPU and GPU after you have cleaned them up. You only need a little on each about the size of a grain of rice. The paste ends up being sandwiched between the processors and there heat sink and aids in heat transfere :)
@roller8 Yeah, because mine had RROD, then it went OK and froze up after 5 minutes of gaming. So, eventually, it will become an RROD because it's linked to the overheating of the GPU. The GPU is what show up stuff on your screen. If it's freeze, it's to prevent it from overheating and getting damaged. So yes, you'll have to open it and do a little fix (:
@roller8 no not at all, try cleaning ur discs, that could be the problem, if not, if ur crashing online, its ur internet connection and resort to wired connection or get to closer to router, if not, clean ur hard drive cache, they are game updates, and sometimes makes ur system crash if corrupted, if not, DONT LET IT OVERHEAT, if it crashes, turn it off for a couple of hours to cool, then move it to a ventilated area, if not, ur hard drive, remove it and play without it, if not, u need repairs
@roller8 You probably need to replace your x clamps with washers to keep down the heat sinks, because honestly the X clamps are pieces of shit tied to a donkey meant to work as a paper weight :P

@7ohSAV It depends on if you still have your warranty or not, If you have your warranty still then I wouldn't recommend opening your Xbox (if your seal in your Xbox is broken then they can void your warranty). To find out if you still have your warranty call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and ask about your warranty.
@markTHEmovieMaker The reason you use thermal paste is because it helps the heat sink to dissapate the heat better, electric tape won't do this for you (the tape will heat up and the sticky resin from it will make a mess on you components).
the porblem of the freezing is when ever you (YOURSELF) repair your 360. by removing the clamps you makes the 360 worse. the freezing might be because of the screews. make sure you bogutthe correct ones and use them correctly

not always its consoles fault, i think in ur case its the power supply. try to plug in other power supply into your xbox and see if the game still freezes. if it does its your xbox's fault, if it doesn't its your power supply :)

u could also mod it, and put some extra fans. it's noisy but it's playable. OR turning on the air conditioner when ur going to play also helps.
